A pair 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Knitting Needles or
size that gives correct tension/gauge.
MATERIALS
A Yarn Needle; 5 (5-6-6) Buttons.
TENSION/GAUGE
21 sts and 44 rows to 10 cms/4 ins over garter
st, using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Knitting
Needles. Note - Correct tension/gauge is
essential for a successful handknit. This
garment has been worked on a bigger needle
than normally recommended.
ABBREVIATIONS
St/s - stitch/es, K - Knit, P - Purl, RS - right side,
WS - wrong side, garter st - every row knit, beg
- begin/ning, dec - decrease one st by knitting 2
sts together, foll - follow/ing, alt - alternate, rem
- remain/ing, K2tog - knit 2 sts together, yfwd -
yarn forward to make a st, cont - continue, inc -
increase one st by knitting into the front and then
back of same st, sl - slip one st knitways, psso -
pass sliipped st over.
CREATE - Back
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 51
(57-59-63) sts.
Knit 67 (73-83-85) rows garter st (1st row is WS).
Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark
beg of armholes as there is no armhole shaping.
Knit a further 48 (52-58-60) rows garter st.
Cast/bind off loosely knitways.
Left Front
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 29
(32-33-35) sts.
Knit 67 (73-83-85) rows garter st (1st row is WS).
Tie a coloured thread at end of last row to mark beg
of armhole as there is no armhole shaping.
Knit a further 31 (35-37-37) rows garter st.
Shape neck - Next row (WS) - Cast/bind off 10
(11-11-11) sts, knit to end = 19 (21-22-24) sts.
Dec one st at neck edge in next row, then in every
foll alt row until 16 (18-19-20) sts rem.
Knit 11 (11-15-15) rows garter st.
Cast/bind off rem sts for shoulder.
Right Front
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 29
(32-33-35) sts.
Knit 3 (5-3-5) rows garter st (1st row is WS).
Next row - K2, K2tog, yfwd (buttonhole), knit to
end.
Knit 21 (23-21-21) rows garter st.
Rep last 22 (24-22-22) rows 1 (1-2-2) time/s, then
buttonhole row once = 3 (3-4-4) buttonholes.
Knit 19 (19-13-13) rows garter st.
Tie a coloured thread at beg of last row to mark beg
of armhole as there is no armhole shaping.
Knit a further 2 (4-8-8) rows garter st.
Next row - K2, K2tog, yfwd (buttonhole), knit to
end.
Knit 21 (23-21-21) rows garter st, then work
buttonhole row once = 5 (5-6-6) buttonholes in
total.
Knit 5 rows garter st.
Shape neck - Next row (RS) - Cast/bind off 10
(11-11-11) sts, knit to end = 19 (21-22-24) sts.
Dec one st at neck edge in every foll alt row until 16
(18-19-20) sts rem.
Knit 11 (11-15-15) rows garter st.
Cast/bind off rem sts for shoulder.
Sleeve (make 2)
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 29
(31-31-33) sts.
Knit 5 rows garter st (1st row is WS).
Cont in garter st, inc one st at each end of next row,
then in every foll 6th row until there are 45 (49-53-
55) sts.
Cont in garter st without shaping until work
measures 13 (16-18-19) cms/5 (6½-7-7½) ins from
beg, working last row on WS.
Cast/bind off loosely knitways.
Hood
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 89
(99-105-109) sts.
Knit in garter st (1st row is WS) until work measures
12 (13-13-14) cms/4½ (5-5-5½) ins from beg,
working last row on WS.
Shape back of hood - 1st row - K43 (48-51-53),
sl 1, K2tog, psso, K43 (48-51-53) = 87 (97-103-
107) sts.
2nd row - Knit.
3rd row - K42 (47-50-52), sl 1, K2tog, psso, K42
(47-50-52) = 85 (95-101-105) sts.
4th row - Knit.
5th row - K41 (46-49-51), sl 1, K2tog, psso, K41
(46-49-51) = 83 (93-99-103) sts.
Cont dec in this manner until 81 (91-97-101) sts rem.
Cast/bind off loosely knitways.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle, darn in ends.
Using yarn needle and mattress st seam, join
shoulder seams. Sew cast/bound off edge of sleeves
evenly between coloured threads of Back and Fronts,
placing centre of sleeve to shoulder seams. Join side
and sleeve seams. Fold hood in half (cast on edge is
face end), join centre back seam. Sew hood to neck
edge, beg and ending approx 1 cm/½ in from front
edges and easing any extra fullness to back neck.
Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
