Abstract
The study looked into the extent of the Importance of Waste Management to
Environmental Sanitation in Golden Country Homes Alangilan, Batangas City, Philippines. The
proper waste management is critical for the safety of the public health and the environment.
When trash is disposed of properly, we are able to prevent less pollution in the air, which can
help with improve public health protection. Providing proper management and practice may
prevent the toxicity of discarded materials entering from the environment and also including the
public health. The study highlights only the implementation, proposal and importance of the
City.
Introduction
Management of solid wastes in the Philippines has long been a responsibility of the Local
Government Units in the country since the enactment of Republic Act 9003 also known as the
Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2002. Animal and human irresponsible activities has
led to arise of the garbage range in the community in Batangas City. It was the solid waste that is
generated from industrial, residential and commercial activities and has been handled in a variety
of ways.

The Problem
Recent studies conducted uncover that a huge number of waste generated all throughout
streets in Golden Country Homes Alangilan, Batangas City that it has a large percentage of
improperly disposal of garbage. Unfortunately this practice has been identified as one of the
fundamental driver of contamination and is turning into a developing worry for both government
and environmentalist as it presents serious threats to public health and the environment.
This study aims to determine the solid waste management practices in selected streets in
Golden Country Homes Alangilan, Batangas City. Specifically, this study has the following
objectives:
a) To ensure the protection of the environment through effective waste management measures
Maria Cristina C. Azuelo, Leah N. Barbado, Luz Menda L. Reyes (2016) conducted a
study about Solid Waste Management Strategies in Camarines Norte, Philippines. The Philippine
environment has already reached its limit in relation to solid waste management that needs
immediate action from all sectors of the government. The enactment of RA 9003 known as the

Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) Act of 2000, provides for an Ecological Solid
Waste Management Program creating the necessary institutional mechanisms and incentives,
declaring certain acts prohibited and providing penalties, appropriating funds therefore and for
needs assessment to identify the current solid waste management strategies, the effectiveness and
the possibility of adoption in each municipality. This study utilized the descriptive method using
questionnaire as the main tool supplemented by interview. Results showed that the existing
SWM strategies with the highest percentages of existence in the twelve (12) municipalities were
provision of number of trucks in transporting solid wastes and knowledge on waste segregation
conducted at every household/establishment. Varying levels were observed. However, high level
of effectiveness is still required for significant impact, seeing that from the six areas assessed
only four municipalities were identified to have more and highly effective SWM strategies.
Generally, only availability of technology for composting was considered more effective and can
be adopted in all municipalities. Better solid waste management may be fully attained through
the involvement, political will and commitment of the implementers in the implementation of
politically passed resolutions and undertaking of their initiatives that will stimulate active
participation of the community. All these measures may bring change in health and environment
in the province.
Paz B. Reyes, Mabelle V. Furto (2013) research study was conducted to propose a plan
of action that will enhance the level of implementation of solid waste management in the city,

lessen the harmful effects to the environment and health of the people and find solutions to
problems encountered in its implementation. The descriptive survey method was used with 204
respondents taken by stratified sampling from selected 69 barangays. A Likert scale instrument
was used to measure the level of implementation of solid waste management practices of the
residents and the problems encountered by the residents in the implementation of solid waste
management practices. A checklist determine the effects of the implementation of solid waste
management practices to the environment and health of the people Data analysis made use of
frequency distribution, weighted mean and ANOVA. From the findings gathered on the level of
implementation of solid waste management and the observed effects to the environment and
health of the people including the problems encountered in its implementation, a plan of action
was proposed with the hope of enhancing the level of implementation of solid waste
management thereby lessening its harmful effects and problems to health and environment.
Amado C. Gequinto (2017) The enactment of the Ecological Solid Waste Management
Act prompted higher education institutions including state universities and colleges (SUCs) to
incorporate ecological waste management in the school system. Thus, this paper aimed to assess
CALABARZON in terms of waste reuse, waste reduction, waste collection, waste recycling,
waste treatment, and final waste disposal. Respondents of the study included university
administrators, faculty members, non-teaching staff, students and concessionaries for a total of
341. A survey questionnaire was used to gather data from Batangas State University (BatState-

U), Cavite State University (CavSU), Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) and Southern
Luzon State University (SLSU). Result revealed that solid waste management practices are
implemented to a great extent. Among the practices, waste collection got the highest composite
mean particularly on the promotion of 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) in the collection of waste. On
the other hand, waste recycling and waste treatment obtained the lowest composite mean. In
terms of waste recycling, establishing partnership with local or private business for recyclable
recovery program was to moderate extent. Waste treatment particularly neutralization of acid
bases was also of moderate extent. The study recommended strengthening of publicprivate
partnership (PPP) on the recycling and treatment of wastes. (Solid Waste Management Practices
M.A. Quiroga1, J. Paul4 etal., (2011) Solid waste represents a major problem in
developing countries due to the lack of regulations and inappropriate management among others,
thus calling for integrated Solid Waste Management (SWM) systems as a possible solution. San
Carlos, a small city in the Philippines, implemented a SWM system to improve the
environmental and health situation in the commune. San Carlos City, located in Northern Negros
Island with a population of approximately 130.000 inhabitants (Census 2007), has recently
(2003) developed and implemented a new SWM system. Replacing an unregulated system and

on the open dumpsite were not considered. During the further development of the system, the

city decided to integrate some members of the informal sector, specifically the waste pickers,
into the formal work system, mainly to take advantage of their knowledge and skills in the waste
segregation and recuperation. They were hired as municipal workers in the Eco Center, the
newly established waste processing and final disposal facility. This marked a significant change
in the city’s strategy and exerted a major impact on the informal sector, thus raising the necessity
to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of this integration process. Overall, the lack of
stakeholder’s participation in the early planning process resulted in the exclusion of certain
sectors such as the informal waste pickers, leaving aside their knowledge as well as their needs.
This study recommended in order to mitigate the impact of substantially reducing the workforce
in waste picking, the proper distribution of advantages among the families in stage zero groups
should be considered.

In addition, the following are methods and programs must be done to improve various
levels in the Implementation of Proper and Improper Solid Waste Management Practices:
• Community Seminars regarding the proper segregation of Solid Waste by the Local
• For the segregation of wastes, provide sufficient numbers of refuse storage for
