The picture shows a small group of people burning a picture of Joseph Stalin in 1956. The
people in the picture look very sad, almost as if they had lost family members in the great purge.
This picture gives a good example of how the people of the Soviet Union or other people from
different countries feel towards Stalin after the events that happened during the Great Purge. The
person that took this picture back then most likely to show how much impact the Great Purge has
had on families, and this picture helps me put myself in the shoes of a person that lost someone
during the Great Purge. It kind of reminds me of how Hispanic people feel towards Donald
Trump, since families have been separated by the US government. This picture is categorized as
a primary source because this picture was taken back then after the Great Purge ended.

The picture shows a hammer and sickle, which is the symbol for communism. This picture can
be used to teach the reader what the symbol for communism is. The source is credible because
the picture of the hammer and sickle looks original. The picture helped me understand what that

Harry Truman's quote explains his thoughts on communism. In the quote, he is biased towards
democracy and he tries to make communism look bad. This quote is useful because I can show
how others feel towards communism. The source from where I got the quote is credible because
the date of when the quote was said is also included. The quote helped me understand how other
people outside of the Soviet Union feel towards communism. It gave me a clear example that
others have a negative feeling toward communism. This source is primary because it shows me
the exact words that Harry Truman said in 1949.

"Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin in 1922." In World History: The Modern Era, ABC-CLIO,

Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin are photographed together in 1922, the year that he was
assigned to be the general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. This
picture is useful to backup the information about Joseph Stalin being Vladimir Lenin"s successor
after Lenin's death. The picture shows Stalin and Lenin sitting together, and I assume that they
were good friends at the time since Lenin appointed him to be general of the Central Committee
of the Communist Party that same year because picture helped me assume that. This is a primary
source because the picture was taken in 1922, and I plan on using the picture where I explain
how Stalin got control of the Soviet Union.

"Vladimir Lenin." In World History: The Modern Era, ABC-CLIO, 2018. Image. Accessed

The source shows a picture of Vladimir Lenin himself in the past. The picture is useful because it
will show the readers how Vladimir Lenin looked like. The source is credible because the picture
is in black and white, and the technology back then wasn't advanced enough to get color into
pictures. The picture helped me understand how Vladimir Lenin looked like back then during
that time frame. I categorized this source a primary source because the picture was originally
taken around the Great Purge time frame.

Secondary Sources

Britannica School, s.v. "Purge trials," accessed November 14, 2018,

https://school.eb.com/levels/high/article/purge-trials/61947.
The Purge Trials were events that occurred during the Great Purge to eliminate potential rivals,
there were 3 trials in total. The Purge Trials sent millions of alleged potential threats to
prison camps. From this source, I will be able to get information on each trial to see what
occurred during each trial. The source gives credible information because the information
is from a high school. The information helped me understand what really happened
during the trials. This article is a secondary source because it records information of an
event that took place in the past.

"Great Purge." In World History: The Modern Era, ABC-CLIO, 2018. Accessed September 20,
2018. https://worldhistory.abc-clio.com/Search/Display/309716.
The first trial was held on August 1936, and it started from accusations against several
communist veterans who were supposedly planning on overthrowing Stalin. They were
all found "guilty" and executed. These trials were show trials to show the public that they
had a fair trial under the Soviet judicial court. Later it was discovered that the accused
communist were all innocent and that the charges were made up by the Soviet secret
police. The author gave a good brief summary of the events that occurred during the
Great Purge. The author only covered the events and he didn't go in depth of the details
about the events. This information helped me learn about trials during the Great Purge
that made the innocent citizens go through such a tragic time, It helped me with how
these events led Stalin to have a triumph of obtaining full control of the Soviet Union.
From this secondary source I plan on using the information about the trials during the
Great Purge, to back up that the citizens of the Soviet Union were going through tough
times.

"Stalinism." In World History: The Modern Era, ABC-CLIO, 2018. Accessed September 20,
2018. https://worldhistory.abc-clio.com/Search/Display/309409.
Joseph Stalin became a member of the Bolshevik party in 1905, and by 1912 he was nominated
by Vladimir Lenin to be general secretary of the Central Committee. He later gained full
control of the Soviet Union after Lenin's death. From this source I can learn about how
Stalin began to take over the Soviet Union. The article gives a brief cover about how he
gained and lost power over time. The author gives a good cover about what he did when
he gained power, but he could've stated more information to how he gained power. This
secondary source helps me understand how he got control over a whole country and what
he did after he gained all that power.
