Scope This standard specifies the symbols of electroplated coating of zinc applied to iron basis metals for decoration and/or corrosion prevention (hereinafter referred to as the plating). As a general rule, ‘the plating’ in this standard shall be applied chromate treatment (including trivalent chromate treatment) after plating. However, to apply trivalent chromate treatment to threads, tightening characteristics shall be confirmed before applying treatment and the time for treatment shall be indicated to the thread vendor by Suzuki 2, Definition Main terms used in this standard shall be subject to JIS H 0400 "Glossary of terms used in electroplating and related processes’. 3. Type and Symbol of Plating The type and the symbol of the plating are classified by the method of chromate treatment and the thickness of the plating as shown in Table 1 Table 1__ Type and symbol of plating Min thicknes Application Type of plating & chromate treatment | Symbol |'SC")'| at eterance) O aa 5 Screw threads, Colored chromate (including generat pars fs MFZn8-C 8 _ | parts requiring valent colored chromate) were 5 corrosion prevention 8 nt © | (Color shade: interference color ) aul tore para 2 MF2n25-C(’) | 25 | and the like screw threads, Bright chromate (including MFZn5-B 5 o ® | trivalent bright chromate) (°) general parts 8 MrZn8-B 8 | Parts requiring & corrosion resistance (Color shade: white) MENn13-B alsa | sera screw threads, © | Black chromate(including eine 5 | general parts | trivalent black chromate) MFzne-K 8 arts requiring & | (Color shade: black) corrosion resistance MFZn13-K 13 _| particular screw threads, ~ | Green chromate Mine 5 | general parts 8 MFZn8-G 8 _| Parts requiring & | (Color shade: olive) corrosion resistance MFZn13-G 13 _| particular Note: (') Plating thickness shows after eliminating chromate conversion coating, © Copyright 1977 - 2012 Suzuki Motor Corporation All rights Reserved HES No 279 0425-1 LevelO | [Confidential > ‘SUZUKI ENGINEERING STANDARDS SES D 2211:20121101 214 | ?) MFZn25-C can apply to only special case such as hydraulic brake piping @) Class 2 can be replaced with Class 1 to discontinue hexavalent chromate use. On specifying Class 1 instead of Class 2, agreement from design department concerned about the requirements such as Appearance and Corrosion resistance is necessary. Remarks 1. The main characteristic of Class 1 is Corrosion resistance. 2. Class 2 is generally called “uni-chrome” and is below Class 1 in Corrosion resistance. 3. Class 3 is below Class 1 in a corrosion resistance and is desired not to be used for the parts always handled since Abrasion resistance of Class 3 is not enough. 4. Class 4 is dark green (olive) conversion coatings and excellent at Corrosion resistance. 5. General rank of Corrosion resistance is as follows; Class 4 > Class 1 = Class 3 > Class 2 4, Quality 4.1 Appearance The plated surface shall be level and free from bumt deposits, blisters, bare metal (‘) exposure or other harmful defects for use. However, an interference fringes caused by the chromate treatment and variations in color (°) of the finished surface are allowed. Note: (*) Care should be taken in case of metal has defect difficult to be clarified in normal procedures, since they can be seen as plating defects by applying plating. (°) Chromate conversion coating of Class 1 with interference fringes remained fully is even better in corrosion resistance though the appearance is poor than the one without interference fringes. Accordingly, interference fringes caused by the chromate treatment and variations in color of the finished surface shall not be subject to a quality evaluation 4.2 Corrosion resistance The test piece shall comply with the requirements shown in Table 2 after performing the test in accordance with SES N 3133 (Salt spray test methods for surface treatment on metal based materials), © Copyright 197 - 2012 Suzuki Motor Corporation All HES No 279 0425-1
