Lab Report # 06

Title

“TO MAKE THE STUDY AND PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF TURGO TURBINE.”

Introduction

A Turgo turbine is a type of impulse turbine. The Turgo turbine can handle flow rates that are higher than those a Pelton
turbine can handle. This ability to deal better with large volumes of water gives the Turgo turbine an advantage when used
in hydroelectric plants that have medium hydraulic heads. Although they are better able to deal with high flow rates, Turgo
turbines are slightly less efficient.

Objective

To study and understand the characteristics and working of TURGO TURBINE.

Procedure

➢ Level the apparatus on hydraulic bench.

➢ Regulate the needle valve to the fully closed position and the dynamometer load to the full load.
➢ Start the pump of hydraulic bench.
➢ Open the needle valve gradually until reaching roughly the half-open position.
➢ Record the reading of the pressure gage and use the hydraulic bench for measuring the flow rate by taking the
readings of volume “V” and time “t”.
➢ Reduce the dynamo meter load slowly until the turbine speed reaches 100 rpm and record the dynamometer load
“F”.
➢ Use the stroboscope for measuring the turbine speed.
➢ Increase the turbine speed and record the dynamometer load in each step until reaching the maximum speed at
which the dynamometer load reduces to zero.

Discussion

A Turgo turbine is a type of turbine, developed in the 1920s, that is a variant of the Pelton turbine. The main difference
between a Pelton turbine and a Turgo turbine is that Turgo turbines use single cups instead of double cups on the wheel,
and these cups are shallower.

Conclusion

It is less efficient than the Pelton Impulse Turbine due to the absence of splitters in mid of the buckets.
