spent close to Shs25 billion during the
February parliamentary elections.
To arrive at this figure, ACFIM

On average, ACFIM found that NRM

opposition legislators spent, Shs187 million

The majority – 66 percent – of the
world’s HIV/AIDS cases are in sub-Saha-

progress, particularly with the provision
of antiretroviral therapy.
However, there are worrying signs in
other parts of the world. There has been
little change in new HIV infections in
countries outside of sub-Saharan Africa
between 1990 and 2017.
In fact, six of the 10 most populous
countries in the world have experienced
10 percent to 45 percent increases in new
HIV infections since 2010: Russia, China,
Brazil, Pakistan, Mexico and Bangladesh.
Even in countries such as the U.S., where
new HIV infections have decreased by

Prof. Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum,

and Richard T. Davey, Jr., M.D., deputy
director of NIAID’s Division of Clinical
Research, are co-principal investigators for
the study.
Trial participants will be randomly
assigned to receive one of the investiga-
tional treatments by intravenous infusion.
Site clinicians will monitor patients’ symp-
toms and take blood samples for labora-
tory tests. Patients will remain in the Ebola
treatment unit until they fully recover from
the disease. They will be asked to return to
the clinic approximately two months after
receiving treatment for a check-up and to
provide additional blood samples for labo-
ratory tests.
Plans are underway to expand the trial
beyond the ALIMA site in Beni to addition-
al Ebola treatment units operated by medi-

International Medical Corps. The trial also
may be adapted to continue across more
than one outbreak and in several countries.
The number of participants enrolled in the
trial ultimately will depend on the evolution
of Ebola outbreaks. The study is designed to
enroll 112 patients per arm, potentially over
multiple outbreaks.
