LIST OF FIGURES
1. Generalities
1.1. General Summary
The K5b license was awarded to NAM during the 4th round in 1979. The operatorship was awarded to Total
in 1995 following the transfer of 50 % of NAM’s rights to the company. In November 1996, the K5b
Production license was granted with EBN participating for 50% and in 1997 NAM farmed-out their remaining
interests to Occidental and Rosewood.
The interests of the partners of the K5b licence are now the following:
5 wells have been drilled in K5b, 4 exploration wells and recently one long reach production well K5-EC5
• K5-1: Pennzoil 1974 (discovery K5-C field)
• K5-2: NAM 1982 (discovery K5-C North field)
• K4-8: ELF Petroland 1995 (now K4-A3, part of the K4/K5 Unit)
• K5-12: TOTALFINAELF 2002 (discovery K5b-U field)
• K5-EC5: TEPNL 2005 (development well to drain the Northern part of K5-C Unit)
In this study four additional wells in the vicinity of K5b have been analysed to assess the regional geological
model:
• K1-2: NAM 1979 which exhibited gas shows in a degraded Slochteren
• K3-2: ARCO 1990 with water in Westphalian and gas shows in Slochteren
• K1-5: Wintershall 2006 – with water in Westphalian and possible gas in a highly degraded Lower
Slochteren.
The main objective of the well K5-13 was to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the Lower Slochteren
Sandstones, in the K5b-S1 panel. Results were expected to be analogous to K5-12 well. The basal part of
the Lower Slochteren was expected to exhibit good reservoir properties in eolian sandstones. The upper
section was expected to consist of damp to dry interdune to fluvial flood plain deposits.
Possible reservoirs may be encountered in the Carboniferous Lower Westphalian B (WLB2) fluvial sand
reservoirs. These reservoirs are not targeted as additional objectives of the well.
Expected resources for the Lower Slochteren were: 0.8 – 1.2 – 2.4 GNm3 (mini – mode – maxi).

The jack-up Ensco 72 came on contract for the K4-A5 well at 20:30hrs on the 10th of July 2006. The rig
reached the K5-13 location on the 16th of April 2007. The well K5-13 was spud on 21st of April 2007.
K5-13
The objective was to drive the 30” CP vertically to a minimum of 30m or refusal. 132m was achieved with 52
penetration (weight of hammer: 16 tons).
The excess 30” conductor was cut and laid down, and then the diverter overshot was nippled up.
A rotary assembly, with 17 ½” rock bit was picked up to drill out the 30” casing shoe
Drilling commenced in rotary mode from 132m with 1.10 SG spudmud/SW polymer. The first 50m were
drilled on reduced parameters to avoid washing out the shoe. At 807 m the mud system was displaced with a
1.16 sg KCL-Polymer-Glydrill mud system. The mud weight was increased gradually with depth and a final
mud weight of 1.32 SG was achieved. Drilling stopped at 1445m section TD.
The casing was run in hole to 893 m, then washed down to 987m. At 987m the hole packed off and the
casing got stuck. The circulation could be regained and the casing was pulled out to surface.
A wiper trip while opening hole to 19” was done, the trip show large amount of caving and confirmed that
keeping the mud weight in a range from 1.30 to 1.32 SG was not enough. The mud weight was raised to
1.35 SG which gave a better wellbore stability.
Finally, the 13 3/8” casing was run and the shoe was set at 1437m and cemented as per programme.
A steerable BHA, with a MWD directional/gamma tool and rock bit was picked up to drill out the 13 3/8”
casing shoe and 5m of new formation to 1450m. An FIT to 1.50 SG EMW was performed. However the
formation was not fractured, the pressure leaked off and did not stabilize.
Drilling however started with a tri-cone insert bit in the cherty chalk. After entering the clean chalk at around
1850m, the bit was pulled out at 1920m and changed with a PDC bit. Drilling continued through the clean
chalk to a depth of 2934m where some traces of cherts were found. The BHA was pulled out to surface and
make up and with new tri-cone insert bit to drill the lower chert in Ommelanden chalk formation.
Drilling then continued in rotary mode from 2934 to 2980m, at which depth the string washed out, and bottom
BHA (±101m) was lost in hole. The remainder of the string was pulled out to surface and fishing operations
had to be done. The fish was engaged and brought to surface successfully.
A new bi-cone insert bit, MWD tools, motor, jar and accelerator were picked and run in hole. Drilling then
continued from 2980 to 3086m, at which depth the bit was pulled out, due to low ROP (2m/hr). The next tri-

cone bit made it through the chert section and was pulled out at 3149m after having penetrate the Texel
Formation at 3141m.
A PDC bit was picked up and drill from 3149 to 3380m. The MW was displaced to 1.25 SG at 3149m and
then to 1.30 SG prior to enter the Vlieland Formation at 3304m. The ROP dropped dramatically at around
3372m and at 3380m and the decision was made to POOH. At the surface it appeared that the bit was balled
up. The same bit was re-run and drilling continued to section TD at 3500m with several intervals of low ROP.
Several unsuccessfull attempts were made to clean the bit by pumping nutplug pills.
The 9 5/8” casing was run and cemented without problems to 3491m.
A rotary assembly, with 8 ½” PDC bit was picked up to drill out the 9 5/8” casing shoe. 3m of new formation
were drilled and an FIT to 1.95 SG EMW was successfully done. At 3560m, the ROP was voluntarily reduced
to 3 m/hr until the top of the Basal Zechstein Carbonates was encountered. The section TD was set at
3586m, 4 m inside the Basal Zechstein Carbonate.
The 7” Liner was run to 3586m where TD was tagged. Subsequently the liner was pulled back to the planned
shoe depth of 3581m. The hanger was set, but the running tool could not be unlatched. After several
attempts to unlatch, the liner was pulled out to surface and the hanger was replaced. The liner was RIH
again and successfully set, with the shoe at 3581m and the hanger at 3388m. The liner was cemented
without problems.
A 5 7/8” rotary assembly with a new PDC bit and a GR-Res LWD was picked up and drilled from 3581m to
3731 m, where a strong building tendency was met. A round trip was performed to pick up a motor assembly
to adjust the wellpath.
The string was RIH again and drilling continued. At 3850m, control drilling operations commenced with a
constant ROP of 3m/hr in the claystone, in order to identify the coring depth by a positive drilling break
(expected when penetrating the sandstone). A low WOB was required in order to achieve a ROP of 3m/hrs in
the claystone. Due to the lack of clear drilling breaks, several depths were picked for circulation bottom up
based on GR offset well correlation. The reservoir sandstones were identified, but the gas readings were
disappointing and coring was cancelled. Normal drilling resumed from 3897m and continued to 4005m (Final
TD) which was reached without problems.
The string was pulled to surface; slight overpull was met when the BHA passed the 7” liner shoe.
Wireline logging operation was then carried out and 4 runs were performed:
After the rig down of Schlumberger equipment, the well was permanently abandoned with 5 cement plugs.

During the 12 1/4" drilling phase, well deviation was measured by a BHI MWD tool from 1445 to 3392m.
Down to 1562m, a survey was taken every stand (ca. 30m). Below this depth the survey interval was

increased to 3 stands (ca. 90m) to a depth of 3500m. The inclination was kept to more a less vertical. An
attempt to slide in the Ommelanden Chalk formation, with bit #3(PDC;HCM605S) was not successful due to
low ROP and high reactive torque.
During the 8 1/2" drilling phase, well deviation was measured by a MWD-tool from 3500 to 3586m.
The well was drilled with a rotary assembly down to 3731m. At this depth it was noticed that the inclination
built too fast (1.71°/30m). The rotary assembly was pulled out and changed for a motor assembly. Drilling
continued and the well was steered back to vertical. The TD was reached as per programme.
3. MudLogging
3.1. Main Mud Logging Aspects
The mudlogging supervision was performed by GEOSERVICES from 132 to 4005m MD/RT (Date: from
19 May to 11 June 2007).
A mudlogging audit has been performed at the end of the 17 ½”’ section. It started on, 27 April 2007 and was
completed on 05 May 2007.

17 ½” section:
No drill floor monitor was available for this section due to a damaged cable.
The airconditioner in the main cabin of the mudlgging unit was down from the beginning of the well (21e
of April). A technician was necessary to top up the freon, unfortunately he arrived at 06 th of June.
The quality of the mudlogger’s computer screen was poor, the red colour was gone and the other
colours faint. This monitor was replaced at the 06th of June.
The WOH was accurate at normal drilling levels, however when overpull was experienced the values
were incorrect and the sensor required re-calibration. The RPM also required re-calibration.
The mudlogger computer was down from the beginning of the well. A new one was ordered.
12 1/4’’ section:
The airconditioner in the working area was still down.
The rig’s RPM signal was still inaccurate. Calibration, after visual counting the string rotation, was often
necessary.
8 ½” section:
Operations went smooth during the 8 ½” section. A part from poor airconditioner system in the working
room, no major or minor problems occurred.
5 7/8” section:
The second airconditioner (equipment-cabin) went also down. A technician arrived at the 06 th of June
and replaced the mudloggers computer screen and the main cabin airconditioner. Also an extended
maintenance was done on the equipment-cabin airconditioner. Both airconditioners were on line on the
07th of June.
Summary:
After the start of drilling, the following parameters (depth, WOB, WOH, torque, RPM, pump flow, active
pit, trip tank and SPP) were cross-checked between the drillfloor and the mudlogging unit on regular
times. Most of the checks were satisfactory. Recalibrations were carried out when necessary.
Gas equipment checks and calibration checks were carried out at a weekly basis, during casing breaks
and when necessary. The results of the tests were all positive, no recalibrations were needed. An
additional quality check was possible to the fact that the FID was running parallel with the reversal. The
readings of both equipments show exactly the same trend; only a small quantitative difference was
noticed.
A regular visit from Geoservices country manager to the rig was done on 30 to 31 May 2007.

According with the geological interest, the potential drilling hazards and the expected ROP, various
sampling rates were planned. Effective ROP and mud loggers efficiency can temporary affect this
sampling proposal. In that case, labelled empty bags were stored in the sample boxes showing these
technically missing samples. Actual sampling started from 140m.

5. Mud Analysis
5.1. Mud Historical Summary
K5-13
17 ½ “ section – 132 to 1445m MD/RT
Drilling commenced with 1.10 SG spud mud/SW polymer. The first 50 m were drilled on reduced parameters
to avoid washing out the shoe. At 807 m the mud system was displaced with a 1.16 SG KCL-Polymer-Glydrill
mud system. The mud weight was increased gradually with depth and a final weight of 1.30 SG was
achieved. Drilling stopped at 1445 m section TD.
During the reaming of the 17 ½” section the mud weight was increased to 1.35 SG.
The 13 3/8” shoe was drilled out with 1.35 SG KCL-Polymer-Glydrill mud to 1450 m. At this depth a FIT to
1.5 SG EMW was performed. The mud was displaced to 1.20 SG KCL-Polymer mud at 1450 m. Drilling
continued to 3149m. The MW was increased to 1.25 SG at 3149m. During drilling, the MW was increased
stepwise to 1.30 SG down to 3275m, just prior to enter the Vlieland Formation.
During drilling out cement and the float collar the 1.35 SG mud was replaced by a 1.70 SG salt saturated
mud system for the drilling of the Zechstein salt interval.
After tagging cement at 3528m, the 1.70 SG mud was changed out to 1.20 SG water based polymer mud.
The MW was kept constant around 1.21 SG till TD at 4005m.

6. LWD/MWD
6.1. LWD Summary
The LWD acquisition has been carried out by Baker Hughes Inteq. The LWD runs are as per list below.
All ten MWD/LWD runs were performed as per specification. No LWD failure was noticed during drilling this
well.
Maximum circulation temperature at TD (4005m MD) is 87°C (detected by TCDM MWD/RDW tool
temperature).
7. Wireline Logging
7.1. Wireline Logging Summary
No open hole wireline logs performed down to 7” liner (3581m)
Within the initial logging programme, the HRLA-APS-HNGS-PEX-XPT-DSI tool configuration was supposed to be
performed in one run. Due to a potential risk of not sufficient power to run the whole toolstring, the decision
was made to split the original run 1.1.1 into : run 1.1.1 (HRLA-APS- HNGS – PEX) and run 1.1.2 (XPT-DSI). Both
runs were performed without problems.
Thirty attempts to obtain a pressure reading were taken, resulting in 8 successful tests, 20 tight tests and 2
lost seals.
Thirty rotary sidewall cores were successfully taken (100% recovery). All the plug samples were sent to Total
Headquarter Laboratory in Pau, France, for further analysis. The results of XRD and PHI-K measurements
are listed in page 35.

comparable with the Rotliegendes. At 3932m the lithology changed in an alternation of grey
claystone, sandtone and siltstone, occasionally interbedded with coal.
Claystone: light grey, often dark grey and carbonaceous, soft to firm, silty.
alternating with:
Siltstone: light grey, argillaceous, soft to firm, occasionally hard, carbonaceous in places.
grading to:
Sandstone: mainly as light grey to off white rock-flour, very fine to fine, argillaceous, in places
carbonaceous.
