Mongo Santamaria first recorded "Afro Blue" in 1959 while playing with Cal Tjader's band. The song uses a typical African cross-rhythm and was the first jazz standard to be built on this rhythm. In 1963, John Coltrane recorded a version of "Afro Blue" that reversed the metric hierarchy by using a swung 3/4 jazz waltz rhythm instead of Santamaria's 6/8 or 12/8 feel.
