City to ask police chief to review streets near school

by a car next to G.T. Nor-
man Elementary School,
one Reed City woman went
to the city council to ask
for something to be done to
keep the kids safe.
Sarah Spruit went to a
recent Reed City Council
meeting to ask for the two-
way stop on Todd Avenue
and Higbee Street to be
made a four-way stop to al-
low for kids to cross safely.
“Right here on Upton we
have a stop sign and right
here on Lincoln we have
another stop sign,” said
Spruit. “This allows for
drivers to pick up speed.
There is also poor vis-
ibility with the parking
because we have cars that
park on both sides of (Hig-
bee) and so one of the con-
cerns I have is that when I
am going east and west on
Todd there are blind spots.
The kids can’t see so they
cross.”
Spruit got the idea that
something needed to be
done about that intersec-
tion after she saw kids
walking home from school hit because they couldn’t

Park streets so kids do not
have to walk in the street.

A family for Christmas

families were expecting
Christmas gifts under the
tree, five Evart kids got
the wish they have been
waiting months for, getting
adopted.
Eric Hays officially
adopted Kirissa, Travis,
Kurtis, Kaden and Emiliee
Hays, who he has wanted
to call his own since mar-
rying his wife Kimberley
Hays five years ago on Dec.
19.
“For any man to do what
he is doing is just amaz-
ing,” said Kimberley. “To
take on five kids and love
them as his own is incred-
ible.”
The family has been in
the adoption process since
October and, though easier
than anticipated, is excited
to be done with it.
“Yesterday made it all
real,” said Eric. “They are
officially Hays’.”
Kimberley, who left an
abusive situation prior to
meeting Eric, is relieved
that she can give her kids a
fresh start in life.
“The kids had a rough
life,” said Kimberley. “We
can finally start a new
chapter, a new beginning.”
When the kids finally
were adopted there was
not a dry eye in the court-
