About the arrangers

Ralf Schmitt is renowned as an African choral music specialist. His arrangements and com-
positions are regularly aired on television and radio and have been performed both locally
and abroad. He has a passion for the preservation of traditional South African folk music and
has arranged and recorded several traditional South African songs. He has presented lively
interactive workshops on South African music at schools, universities and festivals in Argen-
tina, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Canada and the USA. Ralf has conducted the National
Youth Choir of South Africa on two occasions, and holds the position of artistic director at
the Mzansi Youth Choir. Performance highlights include extensive concert tours of Argentina,
Canada, USA, Japan, UK, Germany, France and Austria as well as performances at the Zim
Riya Choral Festival (Jerusalem, Israel), the New Orleans Jazz Festival (USA), and as the
conductor for the opening of Andrea Bocelli’s concert in South Africa.

Michael Barrett is conductor and lecturer at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He
specializes in arrangements of traditional African music, with his compositions and arrange-
ments having been performed throughout South Africa and abroad. He is the founding direc-
tor and conductor of The Chamber Singers, one of South Africa’s most sought after Chamber
Choirs. Michael has won many choir competitions and regularly adjudicates competitions
both nationally and abroad. He has worked with some of the greatest conductors including
Simon Halsey (England), Joe Miller (USA), Bo Johansson (Sweden), Nicol Matt (Germa-
ny), Gunnar Eriksson (Norway), and Maria Guinand (Venezuela). Michael regularly attends
workshops and master classes to keep up with the latest trends in choral music.

Pronunciation notes
isiXhosa is one of the official languages of South Africa. It is spoken by about eighteen per-
cent of the South African population.
As noted in the score, the men are to pronounce zjem as zihm; close immediately to the M to
resemble drums.
All vowel sounds are pure as in Latin.
