RESEARCH TOPIC: IMPROVING STUDENTS ATTITUDE TOWARDS SCIENCE USING INTEGRATED
LEARNING APPROACH

INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY

Integrated science is a key subject on the curriculum of the education system in Ghana.
The philosophy behind it is production of scientific literate citizens who will be able to use
scientific knowledge to solve their everyday problems and also make informed choices and
decision at every turn. No country can develop without focusing its goal in training citizens
who will be scientifically literate therefore the only way by which a country can create
a scientific culture towards achieving the country‘s goal is to make its citizens scientific
literate and this can help the country to deal objectively with phenomena and other practical
issues; where citizens will not rely on superstition for exploring the nature of things.
Background to the Study
The cry to improve effective teaching and learning of Integrated Science in most senior high
schools has proved futile, possibly because the curriculum planners are different from the
curriculum implementers. What educators should understand is that change in students
mind must be supported by parallel changes in curriculum and instruction. However, it
is apparent that many of today’s teachers are caught in the midst of a change for which
they may not have been prepared for professionally (Dogru and Kalender, 2007). More
so, no special emphasis has been placed on the method of teaching and learning of the
science by these curriculum planners despite the suggested method of the use of guided
inquiry method of teaching and learning that is meant to promote learning by doing as such,
what the researcher has observed in the past eight years of teaching Integrated Science at
the senior high school level is usage of Traditional Teaching Method which is mainly Talk
and Chalk. This could be the cause of poor attitude of students towards the studying of
integrated science.
Students’ performances in science in the WASSE continue to decline over the years as
indicated by WASSE results as shown from 2009-2017 WASSE results. This could be
attributed to the fact that students are not getting the concepts due to inappropriate
teaching and instructional methods adopted by science teachers. Studies by Usman and
Shuaibu (2001) point out that most science teachers use traditional method and copying
of notes by students. These methods according to them do not allow active students
participation in science lessons rather, students memorize, regurgitate facts and concepts
without the basic understanding of what it is. The teaching and learning of integrated
science in Christ the King SHS is not an exception to the rule. This study intends to improve
student attitude towards the studying of integrated science using integrated learning
approach. It will also determining the effect of using integrated learning approach teaching
and the Traditional Methods on students’ academic performance in integrated science at the
senior high school level.
“An integrated approach allows learners to explore, gather, process, refine and present
information about the topics they want to investigate without the constraints imposed by
traditional subject barriers. “(Pigdon & Woolley, 1992)

Application INT352 From Mr Mohammed Issaka

Integrated approach encourages student to see the interconnectedness and
interrelationships between the different curriculum areas. Instead of focusing on learning
in isolated curriculum areas, an integrated approach is based on skill development around
a particular theme that is relevant to students of a particular class. It is Student-Centered
in nature, invites the student to participate actively in his or her own learning experiences
(discussion, debate, role-play & simulation and scientific process skills which involve
manipulation of materials and equipment). The greater the range of decision that pupils can
be involved in, the greater the degree of personal responsibility which they are encouraged
to develop, the more likely it is that progression in learning will occur (Nayak & Rao, 2002)
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Senior High School students in the Christ the king catholic SHS have poor attitude towards
the studying of integrated science. This has resulted into poor performance in their WASSE
integrated science results since 2009.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study is to use integrated learning approach in improving student’s
attitude towards the studying of integrated science and to use integrated learning approach
to address it.
It will also find out the effectiveness of using integrated learning approach in teaching
integrated science.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study will find out why students in Christ the king catholic SHS have poor attitude
towards the studying of integrated science and use integrated learning approach to address
it.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS.
i. Is there any relationship between the uses of integrated learning approach in teaching
integrated science and the attitude of students towards learning?
ii. To what extent does the poor method of teaching have on the attitude of students
towards integrated science?
iii. To what extent do teacher’s knowledge in a method of teaching affects his choice of
using it?
iv. What is the relationship between the use of integrated learning approach and traditional
method of teaching on the attitude of students toward the studying of integrated science?
Research Hypothesis
Ho1 There is no significant difference between the uses of integrated learning approach in
teaching integrated science and the attitude of students towards learning
Ho2 There is no significant difference between the poor method of teaching and the attitude
and academic performance of students.
Ho3 There is no significant difference between the use of integrated learning approach and
traditional method of teaching on the attitude of students toward the studying of integrated
science and academic performance of students
Ho4 There is no significant difference teacher’s knowledge in a method of teaching and his
choice of using it?
Research Methodology
A descriptive research design will be used in carrying out this study. This study will be
restricted to the categories of students the researcher considered essentially relevant to
issues being investigated. Simple percentage statistical analysis will be used for the study.

NAME OF APPLICANT: MOHAMMED ISSAKA
PERSONAL STATEMENT
The field of education which is becoming ever so pervasive in all facets of life holds the
key to the future. It also presents a promise of positive transformation in society when put
to appropriate use. With education we can transform our primitive society into a modern
sophisticated one where we will no longer have sanitation problem, poor drinking water
system, food insecurity, short life span and other myriad problems facing our society today.
I have always had a strong attraction to become a lecturer at the university and this means
that I have to study hard in order to earn my Doctrate since it is the minimum requirement
for one to teach at the Ghanaian universities. This strong passion has been unrelenting and
ever growing leading me to pursue M.ED in Science at the University Of Cape Coast. During
my study at the University, I always saw new challenges as opportunities to learn something
new and add to my competence. This attitude always made me the leader during group
discussions, projects and brainstorming sessions.
Also, there are myriad of problems facing the educational system in my country and I
believe that if I am given this opportunity to do my Doctrate and becomes a lecturer, I will
be able to conduct research about some of these problems and make suggestions and
recommendations which when utilize will improve upon education delivery in the country
and this will go a long way to improve upon conditions of people.
Again, I am living in a typical Muslim community where secular education is being look down
upon due to the ideology that the youth will be brain washed. I believe I will be able to bring
changes to the life of these youth.
