Premise

This pdf is dedicated to the musician that does not possess the time and
effort to read or study complex instruction manuals but merely wishes to
quickly acquire what they need directly from the software.

I state that I do not promote nor sell the software that are described in this
PDF, as Band-in-a-Box or MiniLyrics.

These programs, if not already available, will be sought in the respective

web pages of the authors.

My business is to realize Backing Tracks that are helpful to musicians that

make a living by playing live. This software will serve that purpose.

Why Band-in-a-Box

The decision to use BIAB is due to the impossibility of often finding the
suitable backing tracks, such as MIDI or guitar backing tracks themselves.

5
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Utilizing softwares such as Band-in-a-Box is therefore necessary to achieve a

backing track that will often be unobtainable, or sometimes met in poor
quality.

Pros
It is also definitely of great satisfaction if you are able to accomplish the
accompanying quality that meets your needs, and that is different from
what is used by most musicians.

Cons
The downside is that Band-in-a-Box is considered a difficult program to
use, repelling most musicians from fully exploiting its fruits.

This pdf is intended to provide step by step the notions to learn how to
create your own base with BIAB, in a very elementary method.

We have deliberately avoid including all the features that are available in
the software, but only what is strictly necessary to start building any type
of base, quickly and simply.

Real Tracks and Midi

In the tutorial we will use the real tracks or traces ready to be played by
real musicians, instead of the midi, to obtain a song similar to that of a
recording with live band.

The tutorial will also be useful to those who do not possess the real tracks
themselves, but have contented themselves with a MIDI that is already
presented as default in the main program.

At the end of a PDF list of useful links, including video tutorials already
available on YouTube.

If you follow step by step instructions of this tutorial, you will immediately
realize your personalized basis, independent from the availability of shares
in the internet.

BiaB Tutorial

First Things First

1. The Band-in-a-box program, the most recent version possible.

But for the sake of this tutorial we will go with one of the most
common version, 2013.

The illustrated procedure can also apply to subsequent versions.

2. The most vital "RealTracks", those that contain the main instruments,
such as electric bass, acoustic or electric guitar, and of course drums,
in country or rock styles, depending on the genre.

8
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Part 1

After installing the main software and the RealTracks, start the program.

Your screen will look like this:

Let us decide what backing track to create.

We'll go with something popular such as Knockin' On Heaven's Door by Guns

and Roses, in the key of G.

The tone can be changed later without loss of quality, just as the midi.

9

BiaB Tutorial

For your peace of mind, be assured that most icons you'll see are largely
useless.

At first glance these functions in the figure can frighten any neophyte.

They will not be used, they are unnecessary for the realization of our base,

except for the highlighted icons:

We only require these intuitive buttons.

10
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

First Setup

We title the project with the name of the song in, and if you have already
installed the real tracks, their names will appear in green above the menu.

As we listen to the original song, such as from YouTube, tap 4 times

(minimum) on the button [-] to set the tempo:

11
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Band in a Box defaults to a song of a length in 32 bars with 3 choruses.

We change it and start with these settings, as shown.

The buttons Loop and Chorus, indicated by arrows, should be left as shown.
Loop empty and Chorus with the number 1.

12

RealTracks

Now select the drum track.

Activate the "drums" button, then right click to display the following screen:

We select "Real Drums in style ...".

13
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

A screen will appear with the list of available styles. Choose for example
RockEven8 or RockEven16.

So "Play Now".

To listen, put in "solo" the drums track in the menu (right click).

Choosing other tracks

Bass. The procedure is similar.

Right click on the Bass Button and select "Assign RealTracks ...".

15
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

On the screen that appears select a track:

Continue in the same way.

Now we add the guitar:

Pressing "GenPlay" we generate the track and listen in the key of C, which is
the default.

16

BiaB Tutorial

Insert Chords

We write the chords of the song: G, D, C ...

If necessary it will be easier to change the key later:

To enter a chord, make sure that the small gray rectangle is in the bar of
your choice.

Select the chord by pressing the appropriate letter on your keyboard (eg. C
for C major. C minor for C minor, and so on).

The list of available chords is set out on a separate sheet, “Chord Builder”,
opening with right click at the gray rectangle.

17

BiaB Tutorial

Here's how it looks:

Bars

Each bar is identified by a number: 1, 2, 3 ...

Each corresponding to a 4/4 (or ¾, etc.).

18
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Fill
Clicking the beginning of the bar, in correspondence of the red small
number, a colored square appears.

This means that there will be a fill immediately before that measure.

The color (blue or green) matches the style.

The number in the colored square will be followed by the letter a (blue, a
style) or b (green, b style):

The square is the start of a new style, the blue is usually used for the
introduction (intro) and verse (verse), where singing begins.

Green for chorus or the soloist, and is used for example when you want a
sound more pronunced.

Try and listen to the changes.

The colored square is at the beginning of a verse, and BiaB will create, in
the previous bar, a transition (fill) of drums automatically.

After the intro, we insert a new blue square and continue to write out the
chords.

19
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

The first line, from bar 1 to bar 4 is the intro.

The intro continues until the bar 8.

On the 5 bar, one blue square will create a drums fill on the previous bar, in
this case, the bar 4.

The beginning of the real one, the verse, singing, corresponds to box 9.

If you do not want any fill, merely delete the blue square by
clicking on it. The initial coulored square is non deletable.

Type the chords

32 bars are the default number in each new project, and they are
never quite enough. Add more from the menu: Edit, Insert Bar (s) ...

20
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

100 bars should suffice for most songs:

OK.

Then delete the unnecessary leftovers.

21
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

And we continue with the chords...

We can proceed until the song is complete...

To avoid rewriting the same chords in similar parts, it is possible to "copy

and paste", instead of using the repeat function of BiaB, which always
creates confusion, when you want make changes.

We select the portion you want to copy by clicking on the first

box and dragging the mouse, the bars will be colored on black:

22
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Select the bar by dragging a left click, then copy and paste onto the desired
part.

I personally do not use the repeat function of BIAB, as "repeat that x times".

Leading to some confusion and losing sight of the overall vision of the song.

Better to copy and paste, and adding sufficient steps to complete the song.

Ending

You can finally end the song with an automatic final, the last measures:

Note: Just write the first chord.

The next are not in fact considered by the software.

Part 2

Improving the Backing Track

Although the concepts seen so far are sufficient to create a simple musical
track, it helps to know some simple ways to improve it.

We want, in this song for example, that the beginning presents only the
guitar, then at bar 4 a drum fill enters, and by bar 5, follows the rest of the
instruments.

Therefore we will obtain a result shown in this FIG.

Here is the sequence of simple steps:

24
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

1. Select bar 1, the one containing the chord, in this case G.

2. Press F5 from the keyboard …

3. “Bar Settings...”

4. You will meet the following figure:

25
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Mute all the instruments “ALL Instr.”, And select the guitar "Back to
Normal", then press OK.

You will see a red frame on the number of the box, indicating that there are
instructions in his correspondence.

26
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

By selecting bar 4, followed by F5, you will choose to leave active only the
guitar and the drums:

At bar 5, always with F5, we activate all the instruments:

Here appear the red boxes in the bars where we made the changes:

27
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Starting with a Fill

In place of the initial countdown, as with the "counting 4" for example, to
prepare the start of the song, it is possible to follow another interesting
solution.

The drums fill of a single measure alerts us for the song introduction.

On bar 2 we'll insert a change of style, a blue or green square:

Click on the first bar (1a), inside the grey rectangle, then F5, and leave
only the drums track, excluding the others:

28
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

then in the second bar(2a), activate all the tools:

Our song will begin with a short passage of drums, followed by the entrance
of all instruments.

Breaks in the Song

The song Knockin' on heavens door presents some breaks (stop) that begins
around bar 57.

29
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

They are obtained by adding dots to the letter of the chord:

1. One point: G. stop decided

2. Two points: G .. stop normal

3. Three points: G ... stop less decided, with tail

Here is the result on screen (normal stop with two dots in this case):

Slowing Down Time

To slow down time, such as during the end of the song, right-click on the
bar, then F5, then enter a new time value, and confirm, OK.

30
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Pushing the Chord

Often in some songs you need to anticipate (pushing) a chord.

Right click on the gray rectangle and choose "Chord Settings …"

1. Click (green)

2. Which beat (red)

3. Write the chord, even if it is in complex form (blue).

4. OK.

31
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

To hear the result of the “Push by”, it is not sufficient to restart

the song, but it must be restored with "GenPlay":

32

Different RealTrack on the same song

It's possible to change a RealTrack style at any part of the song.

Activate this window by right clicking on the chord, F5, and follow the
sequence shown.

Click OK to confirm.

We observe the following picture.

The track is made up of various parts,

here shown in different colors.

Part 3

Save the track

We will get a file with SGU in the title.

This will help us recall and make any corrections.

However we are not yet ready to use it live.

In fact it is not practical to open a file SGU with Band in a Box on and press
play.

You need to export the track in a convenient format to use, as MP3.

35
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Export the track

We need a program for recording sounds.

I suggest Audacity, widespread and free.

You need to make sure that the audio input is selected correctly (green
arrow) and the volume is at the right level (red arrow).

To do that, play the song on BiaB, and select REC on Audacity. And then
regulate the audio levels.

36
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

This better shows the peaks of the wave. View, Show Clipping.

It is useful to Ieave a tail of about 30 seconds of silence, as some

players at the end of the song go immediately to the next one, not
giving time to change.

37
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

In fact, many players do not have the stop function at the end of the song.

Also remember to cut the unwanted beginning:

38
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Helpful Tip

The instruments are real, but remember that it is always a track created
with a computer, and the parts are then repeated in an identical manner.

To make the track even more true, and not adding too many
instructions, you can adjust in real time the volume of the tracks
while playing the base, and simultaneously recording.

Export on MP3

Do not use the Save selection because you will get an Audacity file.

Instead, choose "Export ..."

39
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

The quality of the audio will set with the button Options ...

With the highest quality of 320 kbps, your track will occupy a space of
about 10MB, no problem with the memories available today.

Wait a few seconds and your song will be exported in MP3.

Part 5

Insert Lyrics

We need a third-party program to enter lyrics.

I use MiniLyrics, which in its basic form is free.

After installing the program, start playing the MP3 song, for example with
Windows Media Player.

Right click on “Lyrics Editor ...”

42
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Search for the lyrics on the web, copy and paste on the MiniLyrics window.

Leave the song on stop at the time 00:00 and click on the yellow box:

It will show the time [00:00:00] on the first line of MiniLyrics:

43
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

Play the song and click again on the yellow square every time you want the
next line to appear:

At the end of the song, “Save Lyrics As”:

Choose the LRC format:

44
www.theguitarband.com

BiaB Tutorial

(If you must later also print the lyrics, save it in text format as well).

Important: the title of the saved lyrics file, must be identical

to that of the corresponding MP3 file, with the only difference
in the name ".lrc". Otherwise, the text will not be displayed.

BiaB Tutorial

The Music Player

A notebook or a tablet as in this example, with Windows Media Player and
the playlist in evidence, will be one of the solutions for the live musician.

To achieve this we need a player that supports text and simultaneously

displays the playlist that contains our repertoire of tracks.

This is not just a convenience, but almost a necessity for the musician who
is accompanied by the backing tracks, letting him free to concentrate on
the performance.

Conclusion

I n order to share this practical and hopefully useful information, it

requires the necessary time and commitment to achieve the mastery of
the software.

If I'd had this book on my first approach to BIAB, it would certainly have
been greatly useful.

I am sure that with this tutorial you will easily be able to create any kind of
songs, without necessarily having to search for a backing track, that often
do not fit you, on the web itself.

Finally, remember that comments are always appreciated and guaranteed

to be read and replied.

Please note that emails of general interest will be published on the site
theguitarband.com.

A good and creative job

SGU Files Download

O n the site TheGuitarband.com there are numerous SGU files ready,

useful for comparing your creation, or as help to this tutorial.

They can also be used as they are, if necessary by changing a few

parameters, such as the key of the song, for example.

There are also many MP3 files on the site, made with Band in a Box, free to
download, someone difficult to find on the web.
