Hello (prospective) Malmö Student!
Welcome to Malmö and one of the best times of
your life, your study period! The study period is a
time filled with crazy things and activities, new friends,
exam and essay anxiety, tears and laughter, and is, in
other words, simply wonderful. This will be a chal-
lenge that will give you both new knowledge and new
insights about yourself.
Maybe you are heading towards the first time of your
life without your family and friends, maybe you feel
anxious about going to a city you have never seen

Union Malmö have ourselves also been there and we

it is to be heading towards something new in your

CHECKLIST
At the beginning of the semester, there are many things that need to be fixed, much
new to learn and keep track of! To make things easier for you as a new student, we’ve
put together a checklist of key things you should do to get the best start as possible!

Find accommodation
To find a place to live is often the first thing to solve.
Read our advice in the chapter: Where should I live? on
page 7.

Get a Multicard
Along with your introduction, Malmö University will

be providing you with a multicard, which functions as
your library card, photocopying card, and acess card. Go
to the university’s library to activate your multicard in
order to be able to borrow books. In order to print and
photocopy, you will need to pay in advance via internet.
Alternatively, you can pay with cash at E121, Orkanen,
Nordenskiöldsgatan 10. More information is available at
www.mah.se.

3 Get a Computer-ID
This can be done at the university’s help desk at the
library. Address and opening hours can be found at
www.mah.se. This is where you should go should
you encounter problems with logging in, printing and
other computer programs.

Attend your roll call
The faculty of Teaching & Society has its roll call on
the 30th of August, while all other faculties have their
roll calls on the 3rd of September. It it important to
be present at your roll call, since your attendance con-
firms your place within your course/programme. If you
are unable to be present, please remember to inform
your course head in good time!

Join the Student Union
Whether you need help with school, finding a night-
club or just a microwave to warm up your lunch, the
Student Union Malmö is here for you. To become a
member in the Union, you can either head to mal-
mostudenter.se/english/become-member/ and follow
the instructions, or you can visit the Union during our

office hours. The membership fee is 79 sek/ semester.

Do you have another e-mail address that you would
rather use than your student mail account? Don’t
forget to forward all student mails to your preferred
account so that you don’t miss out on any important
information from the Union or the University!
Buy course literature
At the Student Union’s second-hand bookshops,
which are currently based at Culture & Society and
Health & Society, you can both buy and sell used
textbooks. You can also find excellent prices for your
books at www.bokfynd.nu
Get a bicycle
Biking is a smooth way of getting around Malmö,
both cheaper and more environmentally friendly
than taking the bus! Check out Malmö City bicycle
auctions for bike bargains. More information can be
found at www.malmo.se
Attend your Initiation
During the introduction weeks, you will get the
chance to participate in a variety of activities,
which are organized by Studentkåren Malmö
and Festmesteriet. These activities include
everything from a City Tour, where you get to
explore Malmö with other new students, to
teambuildning where you get to know students
from your own faculty as well as the whole
univerity. Read more on page 5, Initiation 2012.

During the Union Days, union representatives and
representatives from the union associations will
be present at the various faculties to inform you
about their activities.

Arriving in a new city can sometimes be
overwhelming. Far away from family and
friends it is easy to feel a bit lonely. The Ini-
tiation Weeks is the perfect opportunity to
kick start your time in Malmö! In the begin-
ning of each semester the Student Union
and the official party association Festmes-
teriet, organize daily activities where you
get to know new people and your new city
during two fully crammed weeks!
The initiation weeks are often the first opportunity
for new students to meet new people. To hang out
during fun and exciting activities is often a good ice-
breaker. The initiation weeks are organized by Fest-

student´s individual responsibility for his or her
study situation; with less supervised lectures, multi-

learning skills it can lead to feelings of stress and
anxiety.

We have put together some general tips and sugges-
tions on how to start improving your learning skills
and study technique today!
Look over your study environment, that is, the place
where most of the learning happens. Malmö Univer-
sity offers different types of environments; group
rooms and common spaces for studying at your fac-
ulty and school library, quiet reading rooms and open
spaces like cafés. The study environment has huge
impact on your study results and it is crucial that
you find the environment best suited for you. The
majority of all humans find it easiest to focus when it
is quiet and calm however some of us find it helpful
with music or a surrounding “buzz”.

To become a member you only have to pay 79 SEK
per semester.

representative (studentombud). They are more than glad to help you out. The representa-
tives are all elected by students and work as your main union contact at campus, with specif-
ic knowledge about your faculty. You can find the representatives at your faculty as well as in

What not to miss out on in
Malmö? Malmö is a fun city but
my best tip is to make use of its
convenient geographical location
and go on a one day trip to Ven,
Copenhagen or Helsingor!

Why did you join the Student
Union Malmö? I joined the
union to get a chance to actively
influence my education and to
develop the existing student
social life of Malmö to create
something that can proudly be
compared to other student
cities.
What not to miss out on in
Malmö? My best tip is a visit to
Folkets Park (the city´s most
central recreational area).
There are several activities and
attractions. How about a mini-
zoo with snakes, monkeys and
spiders, big screen broadcasts
of international sport events
or why not get your friends
together for a picnic?
Your best advice to a new
student? I want to encourage all
students at Malmö University to
raise questions, doubts or issues
directly with your lecturers
or program managers, if that
doesn´t work out as you hoped
for, remember that the Union is
always there to back you up!

Why did you join the Stu-
dent Union Malmö? I was first
elected as class representative
and later as student representa-
tive at the teaching program´s
directorate. It was cool to real-
ize that teachers and the dean
listened to what I had to say and
that I had the possibility to influ-
ence my education.
What not to miss out on in
Malmö? A big “must” in Malmö
is to get a bike! Then visit our
city beach Ribban on a sunny
day, grab a delicious burger at
Tusen&2, then turn your bike to
your discounted gym Fitness24-
seven and get rid of the beer(s)
you drank last night at Möllan!
Your best advice to a new stu-
dent? Course literature is not
only available at the University
library. Get a library card at
Malmö City library and reserve
your literature in advance. You
gain easier access to the course
books and save money that I ad-
vise you to spend on a concert
or a well-earned restaurant visit!

Why did you join the Student
Union Malmö?
My interest in foreign affairs and
politics led me to the union’s
student association for foreign
affairs (UF) which I was part of
for two years. After that, getting
involved in the union felt like
the natural step .
What not to miss out on in
Malmö?
Lilla Torg! A cozy square in the
old parts of the city center,
surrounded by bars, restaurants
and cafés.
Your best advice to a new
student? Falafel! Fast, cheap and
tasty!
