CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of Job Training

In the era of ASEAN Economic Community, college students should have skill
specialization from their learning process. By enrolling Translation course, students in
English Language Education Department (ELED) can learn to struggle in the era of
ASEAN Economy Community. Students can get real experience through the job
training program.
The job training program obligates students to create translation bureau. By
creating a translation bureau, students will adapt to how translation bureau work.
Within creating bureau, it can be an authentic place for students to practice their
knowledge and skill about translation. Also, it gives students precious experience jobs
such as marketing, editor, and entrepreneur. Many challenges have faced by ACE
Translator member when they are working with their job description. Those challenges
are in the form of customer service, deciding a price, thermic words and time
management.
To sum up, Job training program trains the student in joining a business and
recognized each skill in translation studies whether they ready to run the translation
bureau or not. By and large, the Job Training tests the ability of each translator before
they run the real Translation Bureau.

1.2. The Objective of Job Training

The objective of job training is mentioned point to point as follow:
1. Job training gives students a real place to practice their knowledge and skills
in translation studies.

CHAPTER II

RESULT

2.1. Preparation
In ACE translator, I was given the mandates to hold 4 jobs. Those were as
coordinator, promoter, proofreader (PR), and translator. Thus, to make every job runs
well, I have to prepare many things, especially related to many jobs.
As coordinator, the preparation that I made was managing evaluation meeting
and publication schedule for all member. Those evaluation meeting and publication
must be done to make sure that everything keeps in line with the project. Also, it is
very needed to keep the team solid.
As a promoter, the preparation that I made was keeping any media publications.
Those media publications are brochure and pictures of promotion. The media
publication will be published in my own personal Instagram, ACE Instagram, and
WhatsApp.
As a proofreader, the preparation that I made was installing grammar checker
app. The app that I used to check the grammar and error in writing mechanism was
Grammarly. Grammarly provides a free and useful grammar checker, yet it is powerful
to be used.
As a translator, the preparation that I made was installing CAT Tool. The CAT
Tool that I used was OmegaT. OmegaT is a powerful CAT tool, yet it is free to be
used. Also, there were some apps that I installed to support me in translating such as
Google Translate, and Power Thesaurus.
Thus, by doing a good preparation such as managing evaluation meeting and
publication schedule, keeping media promotion, installing supporting software for
proofreader, and translator, it can reduce the problems in the future that my occur.

2.2. Self-management as the Translator

As translator the self-management that I do is keeping myself in a good mood.
It is very important for me because when my mood is bad, I feel do not want to do my
jobs. As consequence, the jobs pile up and finished in a short time. Thus, it can affect
my translation result.

2
To keeping my good mood, I usually do some exercise before do my jobs. Also,
buy some snacks to accompany me deal with the jobs. Sometimes, I also translate in
different places such as gazebo campus, library, etc to search for a new atmosphere.

2.3. Kinds of Text were Translated

From October to December, I have translated and edited 8 documents. The
documents consist of 1 letter, 2 books, 3 journals, 1 abstract, and 1 report. The detail
of kinds of text that I translated is described below:

No. Deadline Kind of Text Field / Title Role(s) Page(s)

1. 13/11/2018 Book Geography PR, translator 1
2. 13/11/2018 Journal Psychology PR, translator 1
3. 13/11/2018 Journal Mathematics PR, translator 4
4. 14/11/2018 Abstract German Dept. PR 1
5. 16/11/2018 Journal Agricultural PR, translator 1

9. 29/11/2018 Abstract German Dept. PR, translator 1
10. - - - - -
11. 10/12/2018 Book Mathematics PR, translator 3

2.4. Difficulties and Solution in Finding the Closest Equivalency

There were some difficulties or problems that I have faced. The problems are
mostly related to my jobs, especially in terms of coordinator, and proofreader. In terms
of coordinator, the difficulty that I have faced was in scheduling evaluation meeting.
Some members usually have their own business when I set an evaluation meeting.
Thus, to deal with this problem, I rearranged the evaluation meeting schedule to make
sure that every member can join the meeting.
In terms of a proofreader, the difficulties that I have faced was a deadline. In a
case, a member sent his work lately, whereas the file must be sent to client in the
morning. Thus, as the end line of the translation cycle, it made me have to pay extra
work in midnight till dawn to finish my job as a proofreader. To deal with this problem,

3
I set the deadline a day before the work must be submitted and asserted all members
to finish their job on time. As consequence, for those who sent their jobs out of time,
they will not be paid even they have done their job.
In brief, the problems that I faced were mostly related to my jobs, especially in
terms of coordinator, and proofreader. In the other jobs, promoter and translator, I did
not meet a serious problem.

CHAPTER III

CONCLUSIONS AND LESSONS

3.1. Conclusion and Lessons

3.1.1. Conclusion
In brief, the job training program has given me chance to practice my knowledge
and skills in translation. Also, it has given me the experience to establish a
translation bureau, especially in terms of coordinator, publication, proofreader,
and translator. Also, job training has successfully given me preparation and idea
for my future career. In brief, the job training program is in line with its objectives.

3.1.2. Lesson
There were many lessons I got from this job training program. First, I have
experienced to coordinate a team. It was very challenging for me, since in some
cases there were some problems related to our plan or activities that have been
prepared well. Thus, I realized that everything is not always like what I have
planned or prepared, even though it has been prepared well. However, by doing a
good preparation and setting a second plan, I could run every plan or activities
almost perfectly.
Second, in terms of a proofreader, I learned that everything that I have expected
is not always in line whit the real situation. I expected that a proofreader only
checks some errors in translation result. However, in the real situation, a
proofreader, sometimes, have to edit almost half of the project.
Third, in terms of a promoter, I learned that social media is really powerful to
be used in business. With an attractive and unique promotion style, it can easily
attract clients. It also can compress the outcome since social media is free to be
used.
Fourth, in terms of a translator, I learned that a translator is not about only
translating as what I have imagined before. However, it needs the background
knowledge of every field that wants to be translated.
Thus, being as coordinator, proofreader, promoter, and translator are a new
experience for me. it has successfully changed my point of view on how the real
company should run.

5
3.2. Suggestions
There is a suggestion that I provide for prospective translator. Since, a
translation bureau cannot be run by a person, keeping the team still solid is very
important. As my experience, holding regular meetings is very useful to keep the team
solid.
By holding regular meeting, each member can share their problem, discuss
some project, make a marketing strategy and others. Also, it can make each member
know the weakness of others. Thus, all members can respect each other.
