Glossary of Terms

Altered Melodic Minor Scale- Scales consisting of alterations to the intervallic structure of the
ascending form of the Melodic Minor Scales
Alternate Triads-Scales constructed from two similar or dissimilar triads of any type altered or
unaltered.
Beresith- A composition for solo piano by Dennis Sandole (1950) transcribed for Guitar.
Bitonal Scales- Scales formed from the coupling of tones from two discreet tonalities normally
missing the octave.
Book of Durrow- An original composition for Acoustic Guitar.

Blues Studies- Four measure studies that include harmonic and melodic substitutions on the first,
second, or third four bars of a traditional twelve bar Blues form.
Busonian/Minor Busonian Tetrachord-A tetrachord consisting of a root, minor second, minor third,
and major third intervals.
Contrasting Tetrachord Studies-Harmonic and melodic studies based primarily on creating scales
from two similar or dissimilar tetrachords which may include added tones.
Decatonic- A term used by Dennis Sandole to describe a ten-tone pitch set or scale constructed of
similar and dissimilar smaller pitch units such as trichords, tetrachords, pentachords, etc. In these
studies, it is normally harmonised as a hexatonic scale.
Development of Augmented Triad- Studies that are based on the addition of additional tones above
and below a given augmented triad in order to create and/or imply additional harmonies and scales.
Development of Diminished Triad- Studies that are based on the addition of additional tones above
and below a given diminished triad in order to create and/or imply additional harmonies and scales.
Doubly Chromatic- A term used by Dennis Sandole to describe intervallic relationships consisting of
at least three consecutive semitones.

Doubly Chromatic Chords and Scales Studies- Harmonic and melodic studies based primarily on
chords and scales consisting of doubly chromatic interval relationships.
Duedecuple-A term used by Dennis Sandole to describe a twelve-tone pitch set or scale constructed
of similar and dissimilar smaller pitch units such as trichords, tetrachords, pentachords, etc.

Enigmatic Scale-A seven-tone scale consisting of a root, minor second, major third, augmented
fourth, augmented fifth, augmented sixth, and major seventh intervals normally attributed to an
ascending scale passage appearing in Giuseppe Verdi's work Ave Maria sulla scale enigmata.
Hexatonic- A five-note scale usually harmonised in dyads or triads
Indian/Raga Todi Tetrachord- A tetrachord consisting of a root, minor second, minor third, and
augmented fourth intervals.
Inversion of Scales and Arpeggios- Beginning and ending a scale or arpeggio on a tone other than
the original root tone
Jazz Tetrachord- A tetrachord consisting of a root, minor third, perfect fourth, and perfect fifth
intervals.
Neapolitan on Each Degree of Chromatic Scale- Studies based on the placement of a Major chord a
semitone above chords whose root is on any note in the Chromatic Scale.
Neapolitan on Minor Chord Studies- Harmonic and melodic studies based on the placement of a
major chord a semitone above a Minor chord
Neapolitan Major Scale- A seven-tone scale consisting of a root, minor second, minor third, perfect
fourth, perfect fifth, major sixth, and major seventh intervals.

Neapolitan on Augmented Chord- Harmonic and melodic studies based on the placement of a major
chord a semitone above an augmented triad.
Neapolitan on Diminished Chord- Harmonic and melodic studies based on the placement of a major
chord a semitone above a diminished triad.
Nonatonic-A term used by Dennis Sandole to describe a nine-tone pitch set or scale constructed of
similar and dissimilar smaller pitch units such as trichords, tetrachords, pentachords, etc. In these
studies, it is normally harmonised as a hexatonic scale.
Pelog Scale- A five-tone scale consisting of a root, minor second, minor third, perfect fifth, and minor
sixth intervals.
Prometheus Scale- A six-tone scale consisting of a root, major second, major third, augmented
fourth, major sixth, and minor seventh intervals normally attributed to Scriabin's harmonic practice
in his work Prometheus-The Poem of Fire
Raga Hannumatodi- A seven-tone scale consisting of a root, minor second, minor third, perfect
fourth, perfect fifth, minor sixth, and minor seventh intervals analogous to a Phrygian Mode.
Raga Todi Scale- A six-tone scale consisting of a root, minor second, minor third, augmented fourth,
and augmented sixth intervals
Rhythm Studies-Four Measure rhythmic patterns based on the rhythmic traditions of non-Western
cultures normally to be applied to melodies for harmonisation and compositional assignments.
St. Kevin at Glendalough- An original Composition for Steel String Acoustic Guitar featured on Henry
Kaiser's 156 Strings-Nineteen Totally Original Acoustic Guitarists (2002 Cuneiform Records).
Substitute Chords- Chords that are used in place of more traditional functioning chords that provide
the same harmonic function such as sub dominant, dominant, or tonic functions.
Superimposition Studies-Chords of up to twelve tones constructed by the stacking of mostly tertian
chords.
Symmetrical Scales-Scales that contain symmetrical intervallic patterns.

Unedecuple-A term used by Dennis Sandole to describe an eleven-tone pitch set or scale
constructed of similar and dissimilar smaller pitch units such as trichords, tetrachords, pentachords,
etc. In these studies, it is normally harmonised as a hexatonic scale.
