I​nterpretation:
Vitamin D Total (25OH) refers to the storage form of Vitamin D and includes both Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3 (1,25OH2). Serum levels of Vitamin D3
have little or no relationship to vitamin D stores but rather are regulated primarily by parathyroid hormone levels, which in turn are regulated by
calcium and/or vitamin D.

MEASURING 1,25 VIT D3 ALONG WITH TOTAL VIT D

Vitamin D3 helps in the differential diagnosis of hypercalcemia and acquired and inherited disorders of Vitamin D, Calcium and Phosphorus
metabolism (more routinely in Chronic Kidney Disease), hypercalcemia; oncogenic osteomalacia, Vitamin D-resistant rickets, chronic Granuloma,
Pseudovitamin D-deficiency rickets i.e. vitamin D dependent rickets type I and II

DECREASED VITAMIN D3 LEVELS

Decreased levels of Vitamin D3 can result from chronic kidney disease, various heritable disorders, tumor-induced osteomalacia, the use of HIV
protease inhibitors, or severe vitamin D deficiency

INCREASED VITAMIN D3 LEVELS

Increased Vitamin D3 levels can result from extra renal 1α-hydroxylation or hereditary vitamin D-resistant rickets.
