The Ship of Rescue for Those
who Take Shelter in Allah
Shaykh AÎmad ZarrÙq
also called:
Al-WaÛÐfah az-ZarrÙqiyyah

Shaykh Zarruq’s wazifah (the Wazifah
Zarruqiyyah, as it is sometimes called) is known
to and recited by many lovers of spirituality
and practitioners of Islamic Sufism around the
globe; and that has been so across the centuries
since his instruction 600 years ago.
2
Its title is Safina-tun-Naja li-Man ilallahiltaja,
i.e. The Ship of Rescue for whoever seeks
shelter in Allah.
Shaykh Zarruq himself said about it that:
• It is the wazifah of rescue and happiness, of
opening up guidance and facilitation in matters.
• It is the wazifah of victory and salvation, the
hizb of active goodness and blessings, and full
of immersion in the Prophetic Sunnah through
formulas of dhikr recited in the morning and in
the evening.
He also said that the benefit of gathering the
wazifah was three-fold:
• It gathered the meanings of what other waza’if
contained, while being short;
• It was taken mostly from many ahadith from
many people’s mouths, and both its words and
meaning are clear;
• In addition to words taken from the Prophetic
statements, there was the blessing of receiving
them from the shuyukh. It is thus short yet com-
prehensive, and the invocations gathered in it
are authentic.
3
Shaykh Muhammad b. ‘Abdir-Rahman az-
Zawawi said that he read out the wazifah by
Bab ‘Urwah, one of the entrance gates to the
Makkan Haram, to the Mufti of the Muslims in
Makkah, Shaykh Barakat al-Hattab. The latter
informed him that as Shaykh Ahmad Zarruq
was present at the shrine of the Prophet, ﷺ
he greeted the Prophet, ﷺ, who greeted him
in return saying, “Peace be upon you, too,
Ahmad. Recite to me your wazifah.” ‘I have
many waza’if, Messenger of Allah,’ Zarruq
said, so the Prophet, ﷺ, specified, “The one
that begins with ‘Wa ilÁhukum ilÁhun wÁhid-
Your God is one God.” At that time, the wazifah
was longer than it is now, containing a greater
number of Qur’anic ayat and Prophetic ahadith,
so as Shaykh Zarruq was busy reciting it to
the Prophet, ﷺ, he, ﷺ, said, “Leave out this
and keep in that,” until the end was reached.
According to Shaykh Barakat al-Hattab al-
Makki, Zarruq said to the Prophet, ﷺ, ‘I have
not given it any title, O Messenger of Allah,’
so he, ﷺ, said: “Call it Safina-tun-Naja li-Man
Arada ilallahil-Laja” - The Ship of rescue for
4
those who wish for shelter in Allah [The final
title it is known by is a slightly different variant
of that].
Shaykh Zarruq said that he vouchsafed to
whoever recited it twice daily, morning and
evening, performed the five obligatory prayers
in congregation and fasted Mondays and
Thursdays, that he would die upon the shahadah
of Islam, that he would not be abased among
people (Shaykh Zarruq prayed in jama`ah every
day for forty consecutive years).
There are numerous blessings in the wazifah,
as listed by Zarruq’s disciple Sidi Muhammad
b. ‘Ali al-Kharrubi:
• Invocations to repel contingent attacks from
Shaytan;
• Beautifying the beginning of the spiritual
journey and attracting perfection at its end;
• Qur’anic ayat comprising Allah’s Greatest
Name by which He answers if invoked and He
gives if asked.
• Ayat protecting the reciter from Shaytan and
his armies;
5
• Invocations that are enough as reward for
spending the whole night in worship;
• Qur’anic passages that are equal to one-quar-
ter or one-third of the Qur’an, as well as what
is equal to the Qur’an, the Torah, the Injil and
the Zabur;
• Expansion in sustenance in one’s place of res-
idence or when travelling;
• Removal of minor or major evils;
• Removal of worry and extinction of debts;
• Dhikr which, if recited in the daytime, will
ensure the Garden for one who dies on that day;
and if recited on that night, will ensure the Gar-
den for one who dies in that night;
• Dhikr for which Allah completes His bless-
ings to a servant in this world and the Next;
• Dhikr which is so rich in reward that the an-
gels are worn out by recording all of it;
• Dhikr for which the Prophet, ﷺ,will take
its reciter by the hand and make him enter the
Garden.
• Invocation protecting one from snakes, scor-
6
pions and other poisonous creatures.
• Invocation for which Allah will entrust 70 000
angels to its reciter, so they will pray for him
and guard him till the end of the day or the night
as the case may be, and if he dies on the day or
at night in which he recites it he will die as a
shaheed.
• An invocation for which Allah forgives a per-
son even if his sins are as huge as the foam in
the sea.
• An invocation protecting a person from blind-
ness, insanity, leprosy and paralysis, as well as
removing loneliness in one’s place of residence
or on a journey.
• An invovation which, if recited at the end of a
gathering of falsehood, will spare its reciter the
evil of what is said in it, or which will seal him
with goodness if recited at the end of a gather-
ing of truth, etc.
May Allah accept our humble efforts and
may He forgive any errors and mistakes that
we may have incurred.

About the book
As Shaykh Ahmad Zarruq was present at the shrine
of the Prophet, ﷺhe greeted the Prophet, ﷺ, who
greeted him in return saying, “Peace be upon you,
too, Ahmad. Recite to me your wazifah.” ‘I have
many waza’if, Messenger of Allah,’ Zarruq said, so
the Prophet, ﷺ, specified, “The one that begins with
‘Wa ilÁhukum ilÁhun wÁhid- Your God is one God.”
At that time, the wazifah was longer than it is now,
containing a greater number of Qur’anic ayat and
Prophetic ahadith, so as Shaykh Zarruq was busy
reciting it to the Prophet, ﷺ, he, ﷺ, said, “Leave
out this and keep in that,” until the end was reached.
According to Shaykh Barakat al-Hattab al-Makki,
Zarruq said to the Prophet, ﷺ, ‘I have not given
it any title, O Messenger of Allah,’ so he, ﷺ, said:
“Call it Safina-tun-Naja li-Man Arada ilallahil-Laja”
- The Ship of rescue for those who wish for shelter
in Allah [The final title it is known by is a slightly
different variant of that].
