Traditional Methods of Animation

Traditional of animation = Creating animation by hand

Techniques:
1. Key frames
2. Cel animation
3. Rotascoping

Key Frames

• The drawing or painting is usually done by more than one person

• The senior artists go and draw the major frames of the animation
• Key frames are the key points of the animation
• A bunch of junior artists draw in the frames in between
• The time in which animation can be produced is reduced dramatically

Cel Animation

• Each character is drawn on a separate piece of transparent paper

• A background is also drawn on a separate piece of opaque paper
• The different characters are overlaid on top of the background in each frame

Rotascoping

Rotascoping is the process of copying images

from moving video to create animation.

Animation Today
Animators’ drawings and the backgrounds are either scanned into or drawn
directly into a computer system.

Various software programs are used to color the drawings and simulate camera
movement and effects.

The final animated piece is output to one of several delivery media, including
traditional 35 mm film and newer media such as digital video.

11
Software for Animation

Animator Pro and Adobe Flash are used to create 2-D

animation.
3D Studio and Maya are used for 3-D animation.

12
Process of Animation

1. Story board layout

2. Object definitions
3. Key frame specifications
4. Generation of in-between frames

Animation for Multimedia
• Realistically rendered buttons or design elements on a Web site (i.e., buttons that look like actual but-
tons or a door knob with three dimensions)

• Informational charts and graphics—often inserted into business presentations created in another
authoring environment (i.e., Microsoft PowerPoint)

• Walk-through interfaces or “virtual reality” tours of buildings, including interactive links on panoram-
ic photos of locations

• Interactive in-the-round product demonstrations, including proof-of-concept virtual models

(a premanufactured prototype of a product)
