The internet a tool widely used by just about everyone whether that be checking an email,
checking the weather, or researching and many more things. Currently the fastest speed available
is 4g which has been enough for consumers so far. However, with the rapid growing population
and the need for more newer technology and features this standard is quickly changing. The
solution to this problem is 5G the next revolution in speed for mobile technology for the future.
In terms of comparison 5G speeds are 1000 times faster than 4G speeds. The need for
this demand will make most things such as downloading movies seamlessly. This is the future
everything will take seconds there are so many capabilities and potential this technology has.
The transition from 3G to 4G though it has been 10 years this demand was heavily induced by
the desire to stream everything. Soon all major streaming services transitioned over to mobile
devices from Netflix to YouTube and many others saw the potential in this technology. This was
a introduction to a new age of mobile technology a new age. Just as 1G was once just for calls
and 2G introduced texting 3G was a stepping stone for 4G. In todays era 5G is the next
generation it is solidified as the new standard. With newer technologies the demand for faster
speeds is greater than ever before such as Self driving cars with no latency errors. There are
many other industries that would have a huge revolution such as the gaming industry. With
higher speeds the industry will be able to implement augmented and virtual reality into the
market. With this technology new industries can be explored new opportunities can be made and

the world overall will be better off with faster technologies. This product driven information is
These types of speeds were only ever possible at home with this it breaks the gap
between having internet indoors and having it everywhere. It is revolutionary in many ways the
FCC believe that it could be released in 2020. Thanks to the speed and latency being so low this
could bring self-driving cars to the market without errors. Sacramento California is set to be the
first city with 5G available to the public. With all this this brings cities to the next level to
becoming smart cities. What are smart cities the idea of autonomous vehicles is just the
beginning of what is possible. The other big thing they are looking into is that it is technically
possible. The cost of putting 5g ranges between 130 billion to 200 billion a very large
investment. This would be very different from what we have used before with large cell relay
towers instead this would work with small cells. These small cells would be placed every 250
meters apart working better for cities and everywhere else. This uses a tactic called
“beamforming which concentrates WIFI to signals to improve signal strength”. With the cost in
mind this would help autonomous vehicles flow in real time with no latency errors. Latency is
the transfer of data and when dealing with autonomous vehicles that is the most important factor
in ensuring safety. This would make autonomous driving overall more safe and secure because
business model vs municipal control in Sacramento it is the first city to be able to have
partnering up with cities and helping them achieve the development. With these developments
Sacramento may very well be the first smart city in America. However, with so much backlash it

gets in the way of progress to get this revolutionary technology in the hands of the consumers.
One thing that has to be made clear is that fighting against progress does not help anyone and in
fact does continue to create a bigger issue such as the digital divide. It is truly a relationship
these companies have the tools to make this possible and as stated “lets put those pieces
together”. This is a nationwide imitative that could mark an age of cooperation and
entrepreneurship and truly define a generation. This would be comparable to the Panama Canal
and how hard it was to build and do construction to make that possible. The technology is there
but communities must take action and this technology should be readily available to the public.
Santosham the chief of innovation officer of San Jose California illustrates this perfectly in the
way she describes the relationship “cities are the problem getting the way of development” in
terms of regulations. Santosham perfectly describes the role of the people in the government that
it is simply to “make sure we get those deployments in a way that is equitable and in the best
interest of our residents”. This is a important investment into the people of the United to ensure
that innovation and entrepreneurship is still a key value and is highly regarded in many ways.
The Chief Technology Officer for the state of Georgia describes how cities should be
understanding the situation. With a quote it summarizes the call to action for cities and what they
need to understand such as “leverage to make it worth opening up these assets”. Meaning the
problem is that there needs to be an understanding between cooperation’s and services it’s an
investment opportunity. This is an investment for the counties for the cities for the people, for the
college graduate starting up a new company, for the new technologies that could save lives in an
instant thanks to speed. This will improve a variety of applications in the medical field such as
improved remote monitoring. This will be able to monitor patient conditions effectively,
diagnosing an issue before it becomes fatal, and affect more fast acting outcomes.

However even though this change would be fantastic for the technology industries cities
across with the cost of this project reaching the upwards of 200 billion dollars it is hard to get
carriers to commit as well as cities changing regulations. The FCC in March voted to loosen the
regulations making it easier for an operator to deploy small cell infrastructure. There is allot of
controversy about 5G infrastructure however these changes do not override statute and local
regulations. Many people associate this with being a contentious environment with carriers
having access to deploy small cells. Another big issue is going to be connecting all those fiber
optic cables because “Digging up roads is really expensive”. Unfortunately making this idea
come true is very costly as many IT leaders are looking into making a way to where it is more
financially viable. This puts a large strain on cities and municipal codes. This massive scale
project would take allot of time and money not just in the fiber optics but in the construction of
putting everything in. One of the biggest issues with the localities everywhere would have less
authority over the 5G infrastructure. The size of these small cell antennas are the size of pizza
boxes however some of them are a bit larger. The reason so many antennas need to be built is
because the cells have a limited range. With this in mind 5G will most likely “further the widen
the digital divide that has disadvantaged parts of rural America. Due to the cost of fiber optic
cabling and the installation alone would take 5 to 7 years nationwide. However, with all these
drawbacks there are benefits as well. Engineers and regulators predict this will become essential
for new technologies such as self-driving. But it isn’t just limited to that with this smart city
energy grids will be possible and newer more efficient water systems. Holding out on this
investment opportunity would be costlier falling short of deployment will eliminate some
broadband providers for Americans “widening of the digital divide”. Not only will this affect us

locally but globally because other countries are already putting money to invest in this rapid and
Overall this represents what could be done for the future of Americans the investment we
take today could be the opportunity tomorrow. In many ways this is a way of futureproofing
technology to put it in perspective the demand for 4G with the growing population has a ceiling.
With the growth of the population evolution is necessary to make further progress in society.
With this new industry will take center stage and make it’s mark as well as new innovations that
could save lives. Speed is important for saving lives being able to know where someone is
critical to safety for instance finding a lost child would have no room for error. With this the fear
of being self-driving cars would be practically nonexistent due to the speed and efficiency. That
efficiency will go on to newer technologies this will mark the end of an era in technology and
open a new realm of possibilities. It won’t be easy however fighting the process creates issues
for the populous as a whole and in the way of progression. This opens up newer and greater
possibilities and giving a newer generations opportunity. This is about a new age this brings
together the efforts of the communities and cooperation’s to make this possible and this will
landmark a historic point in time. What was thought to be an ideas of science fiction would very
well be possible with this emerging technology in todays society. This would represent a growth
in our nation as well as growing as a people working along side cooperation’s to achieve bigger
and greater goals. This is a community effort and a call to action to everyone to bring the
technology of the future today. Though the cost may be high and the implementation of this
technology will take years of work and perfection. Nothing worth doing was ever easy this will
represent a new generation of innovators entrepreneurs and mark a new age in technology. In
