PROCEDURE:

1. 100ml of distilled water was poured into a beaker.

2. A straw was placed vertically in a beaker with water until it touched the bottom.
3. A crystal of potassium permanganate was dropped into the straw without moving the
straw.
4. The straw was removed carefully to avoid disturbing the water.
5. The purple colour was observed as it immediately begun to spread throughout the water.
6. Thee beaker was left for a few days for observation.

OBSERVATION/RESULTS:

It was observed that overtime the potassium permanganate molecules diffuse so they are evenly
spread throughout the solution; it was also observed that at the starting point, the potassium
permanganate was dark purple but has it reached the different distances the solution got lighter.

DISCUSSION:

Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of lower
concentration .diffusion can happen in gases and in liquids .Diffusion is important to organisms
because it is the process by which useful molecules enter the body cells and waste products are
removed . It was important to keep the beaker of water out of the sunlight because sunlight will
cause the particles to move faster and change the color of the potassium permanganate. The color
moved through the water because water particles are in constant motion, It causes the molecules
of the potassium permanganate to move throughout the solution.

CONCLUSION:

It can be concluded that diffusion supports the kinetic theory seeing as the potassium
permanganate particles moved throughout the solution without being disturbed .Hence the
molecules of the potassium permanganate moved from an area of high concentration to an area
of low concentration and spreads throughout until evenly distributed.

REFLECTION:

Diffusion is a passive process. It does not require added energy, Diffusion will continue until the
molecules of the substance are evenly distributed through the gas or liquid. Diffusion occurs in
our daily life in many ways , You can smell perfume because it diffuses into the air and makes its
way into your nose ,A teabag placed in a cup of hot water will diffuse into the water, Placing
food coloring in a liquid will diffuse the color, When cooking pasta, the water diffuses into the
noodles, making them bigger and moister .If you water wilted plants, the water will diffuse into
the plants and they will get firmer .these are just a few ways diffusion takes place in our daily
life.
