TAKE HOME QUIZ GENERAL BIOLOGY 2- STEM 5

Population Ecology and Dynamics

Solve the following problems and show your solutions in a long sized bond paper. Deadline will
be this Tuesday, November 27, 2018 on or before 1:00 PM. Late submission of papers will be marked
ZERO. Copy the problem and answer.

1. Wolves in a certain area are growing logistically, until it reaches 25% of its carrying capacity, and it
grows eight-fold. How many days will it take from the beginning for the growth to reach its maximum
rate, if it has a per capita growth rate of 0.05 wolves per day?

2. Given a table below of the population growth of mice-

Time of Growth Number of mice
After 5 days 200
After 25 days 1500
If it follows the exponential growth model, how many mice is present in the habitat after 50 days?

3. There are 300 organisms who carry the homozygous dominant gene, 200 organisms who carry the
heterozygous gene and 250 organisms who carry the homozygous recessive gene, but this data does not
obey the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. As a biologist, to have a sufficient growth, you propose that to
attain the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, you should add the same number of species who carry the
homozygous dominant gene, organisms who carry the heterozygous gene and organisms who carry the
homozygous recessive gene so that the population will be double the original number of individuals. In
order to be in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, how much organisms for every genotype you should add
and what will be the resulting allele frequencies?
