Subject Name: Computational Methods
Time: 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.

Q.1 (a) Setup the mathematical model for the spring-mass-dashpot system upon which 11
external force is applied of the form of r ( t )  F c o s  t .

1) Using the method of undetermined coefficient, find the particular
solution of system.
2) Define resonance. Find the amplitude of the under-damped system for
the resonance condition. Draw the graph of result and interpret the
physical meaning of result.

(b) If the productivity of producing a defective screw is p = 0.01, what is the 03

probability that a lot of 100 screws will contain more than 2 defectives? Show
the details of your work for binomial and poisson distribution.

Q.2 (a) Using a divergence theorem, set up the mathematical model for the heat flow 07
called a heat equation, if the velocity of the heat flow in a body is of the form,
v   k g r a d U , where U ( x , y , z , t ) is temperature, t is the time and k is thermal
conductivity of body. Assume constant thermal conductivity.

(b) Tank-1 contains initially 100 liter of pure water. Tank-2 contains initially 100 07
liter of water in which 150 Kg of salt are dissolved. The inflow into Tank-1 is 2
lit/min from Tank-2 and 6 lit/min containing 6 Kg of salt from the outside. The
inflow into Tank-2 is 8 lit/min from Tank-1. The outflow from Tank-2 is 8
lit/min. The mixtures are kept uniform by stirring. Using Laplace transform,
find the salt contents y ( t ) and y ( t ) in Tank-1 and Tank-2 respectively. Show

the details of your work.

(b) Using Laplace transform, determine the response of mass-spring system 07
modeled by y "  y  2 t , having initial conditions y ( 1  )  1  , y '( 1  )  2  2 .
4 2 4
Show the details of your work.

Q.3 (a) Write the Sturm-Liouville equation. Represent (1) Legendre’s equation (2) 11
Bessel’s equation in the form of Sturm-Liouville equation. Find the possible
1
eigen values and eigen function of y "  y '  y  0 , 0  x  3, y ( 0 )  0 , y (3 )  0 .

(b) Determine a 95% confidence interval for the mean of a normal distribution with 03
variance = 9, using a sample of n = 100 value with mean = 5. The value of c =
1.960 corresponding to confidence level.
OR
Q.3 (a) A rod 30 cm long has its ends A and B kept 20oC and 80oC respectively until 11
steady state conditions prevails. The temperature at each end is suddenly
reduced to 0oC and kept at same temperature. Find the resulting temperature
function u ( x , t ) from end A.

(b) A median of the population is a solution x = µ of the equation F(x) = 0.5, where 03
F is the distribution function of the population. Suppose that eight radio
operators were tested, first in rooms without air-conditioning and then in air-
conditioned rooms over the same period of time, and the difference of error
(unconditioned minus conditioned) were

9 4 0 6 4 0 7 11

Test the hypothesis µ = 0 (that is, air-conditioning has no effect) against the
alternative µ > 0 (that is, inferior performance in unconditioned rooms). Take
the significance level as 5%.

Q.4 (a) Three blocks are connected by a weightless cord and rest on an inclined surface 08
as shown in figure:-1. Develop the mathematical equations which correlate the
tension between the blocks and acceleration. Solve the obtained linear equations
using L-U decomposition method to find the tension between blocks and
acceleration.

Q.4 (a) For the system shown in figure:-3, develop the mathematical equations which 07
correlate the tension between the blocks and acceleration. Represent the linear
equation in the form of Matrix. Using the Gauss-Jordan method, find the
2
inverse of matrix formed by the co-efficient of unknown parameters.

(b) Using Q-R Factorization Method, find the matrix of eigen vectors for the given 07

matrix , do only one iteration.

Q.5 (a) Solve the equation over square mess with sides 07
x = y = 0 and x = y = 3 with u = 0 on boundary and mess length is 1. Assume
