This list can be used to identify potential impacts and, by qualitative or quantitative. means, their
magnitude. An example of the types of biological impacts associated with a project is shown in Table 7-2.

resulting from each. of eight alternatives to each parameter were determined in this study. Table 7-2 alo.

identifes the relative importance weight assigned to the 31 parameters. Of the 31 biological parameters
used, 21 were considered of high importance, 5 of medium. importance, and 5 of low importance. High-
importance parameters were weighted as three times more important than the low-lmportance
parameters, with the medium . parameters being intermediate between these extremes. Many
environmental impact statements are characterized by having a very. complete species list in the
environmental setting section but a very cursory. presentation of the impacts of the alternatives on these
species. . : may be impossible to completely describe every potential impact; however, it is important.
that some attempt be made to describe the general changes that would result from the implementation
of the proposed action on as many species as possible. O

CHAPTER 7 articular importance is a discussion of the potential changes on any rare and. endangered
plant or animal species identified in step 2. A detailed discussion of the implications of changes on the
biological environ. ment, as well as interrelationships among various parameters, is considered beyond .
the scope of this chapter.

STEP 6: SUMMARY OF CRITICAL IMPACTS The final step in prediction and assessment of impacts on the
biological environ. ment is a discussion of any critical changes that have been identified in conjunction .
with step S. In essence, this final step represents the results of assessment of the . magnitude and
importance of changes resulting from project implementation. This . step is a means of summarizing
biological impact information for agency decision . makers.

SUMMARY One of the most important categories of impacts associated with project develop- ment is
related to potential changes in the biological environment. These changes . can result from changes in
land-use patterns and are of particular importance . relative to any rare and endangered plant or animal
species present in the area of interest. Numerous sources of information are available for assembling
species lists . for areas as well as for describing general community types. Impacts of various alternatives
on the biological environment are potentially manifold. One technique . for addressing these impacts
consists of using a checklist of potential impacts and determining their relevance for the particular study.
The impacts should be quantified where possible, with qualitative descriptions prepared for the balance.
