Voting Theory project

Elann Allison P.1

Pt.1
The Iowa caucuses are events held to elect people into office. Republicans and democrats
meet to elect a delegate of their party and then vote for president. The Iowa caucuses are
important because they are the first major contest for a president’s election. It gives a good
indication of who will be a good candidate and who will do well. If a candidate does poorly, they
will most likely drop out soon.
After a democratic protest in 1968, the party decided to spread out the voting schedule.
Voting is held February first. The Iowa caucus is different from the other state caucuses in that
they go to a set location in the 1681 precincts located throughout the state. These include
schools, churches and peoples houses. The presidential elections are held every four years at
these locations.
The democratic process is more complicated than the republicans. The precinct divides
delegates proportionally to the caucus votes. Then people stand in a designated area of the room
then are given thirty minutes to convince one another to vote for their delegate. After thirty
minutes the conversations are stopped and they reorganize. They are then given another thirty
minutes to discuss after seeing who is doing well. After the voting most people go home with a
few left to finish business.
Republicans do theirs differently. They do a secret ballot unlike the democrats. The
problem with discussing and persuading others is peer pressure and the lack of privacy in who
you’re voting for.

For the third part of the project ten people voted. My family of four and six of my other
friends. We had four candidates. Me(E), my friend C, S, and I. Using the plurality method I
would win. In order to get a majority six votes would be needed but for a plurality three is
needed. Using instant runoff voting method I would win with a majority of seven votes in first
choice.

For the Borda count method E gets 18, C gets 23, S gets 29, and I gets 31. I would win with the
most points for Borda Count method. Using Copeland’s method E gets 0, C gets 1.5, S gets 2.5, I
gets 3. I wins using the Copeland method. The condorcet winner would be I.
Using the condorcet criterion I wins but he also wins using plurality and Borda count. He
is the winner because he won not only plurality but two other methods. The condorcet criterion
says that he wins because he won one on one with all other candidates.
