Introduction
The Rationale of the Problem is the readiness thru experiences of Grade
12 Maritime students for Tertiary Level. Being unprepared is one of the worst ways a
student can ever be and being unprepared while entering college is not a good look
either.
The Tertiary Level for the Maritime Academy is a stepping stone, a step closer to being
onboard, and a step closer to opportunities and chances of good luck. But the lack of
preparation, skills, education and understanding of what the concept of being a seafarer
truly is, sometimes becomes the hinder that separates students from success. With the
readiness thru the experiences of Grade 12 Maritime students, they will be able to be
more prepared in undergoing the set of requirements that is set for them in college and
would therefore be a better foundation for the students taking up the Course.

The setting of the research is in Lyceum International Maritime Academy.

The LIMA Campus, as it is commonly known lies near Batangas Bay and as the name
goes, the campus is in dedication to students who will take up the field of Maritime, the
industry, inland or offshore. The Maritime Academy is the first Maritime school to be
ISO Certified and rated compliant with STCW 95’. It is also the region’s first Level 4
Accredited Marine Engineering Programs. The LIMA Campus is one of the affiliated
campuses of LPU-Philippines, an institute of higher learning education founded in 1952
by Dr. Jose P. Laurel, who became the Third President of The Philippines under the
Second Republic. The Lyceum of The Philippines University was established for higher
and as it opened its doors for the first time for students in the mid-20th century, it started

1
to trailblaze the higher quality of education, and innovative teaching ways from teacher
to
students in order for the students themselves to have achieved a higher sense of
understanding about the world around them. The same can be said with Lyceum
International Maritime Academy as it is always leading the region and the country in
Maritime education and excellence. Producing Globally competitive, highly skilled
Intellectuals that continuously brings the Laurel legacy wherever the place may be.
The Basic Literature Foundation Of The Study revolves around the
different
Articles made by different authors ranging from a wide time table that tackles the topic
of Grade 12 Maritime student’s experiences for the Tertiary Level. Several topics were
direct to the point of the topic while there are several articles that is related to the
topic as well. The articles range from the variables; Personal Discipline, Intellectual
Capabilities, and Physical Discipline. There would be 10 articles per variable, the
Researchers have had a total of 30 articles

The research is being conducted as the experiences of Grade 12 students

in taking Maritime Strand is crucial, from the skills and learnings students would have
acquired from the said experiences to immersion and teaching styles of the teachers
and
professors, academic performances of the students, the disciplinary implementations,
among others, would be great of help towards the Tertiary Level of education, which in
for the case of Grade 12 Maritime students, is either BSMT (Bachelor Of Science and
Marine Transportation) or BSMAR-E (Bachelor Of Science and Marine Engineering).
Through the experiences of Grade 12 students, they will be able to transition into
College
easily and would have a greater chance at becoming better professionals onboard.

The General Objective of the Problem is to asses whether or not the

Grade

2
12 Maritime Students would be ready for the Tertiary Level with all of the experiences
that Senior High School, particularly Grade 12, would have given the students. Having
the knowledge about the experiences of Maritime Students and to know if the
experience
the students have acquired would be enough for college is important as it would be a
mirror into telling if the next batch of students to take up the Tertiary Level are ready
and
that if they would do well in the Course that they have chosen. This is not of something
to just be set aside by, this mirror is something that should be paid attention into as it
would define the turning point of the student’s lives from Grade 12 to their First year in
The Tertiary Level. And to know whether or not the incoming college students are
ready or not would be an important indicator of how well the K12 system is doing, too.

The overall purpose of the problem is to know and understand the

experiences of Grade 12 Maritime students and to develop an understanding on
whether
the Grade 12 students would be ready for the Tertiary level or not. Through the data of
skills and performance, may it be academic or extra-curricular, the researchers would
be able to know if the incoming college students would be competent and ready, fit,
for the new set of learnings and activities that the Tertiary Level would entail. The said
assessment of the acquired knowledge and skills would determine the future
performances of the students in College and the same would go for the process of
coping
up the new environment in the Tertiary Level. The purpose of the problem is to see
whether the K12 program (Senior High School, particularly) is effective in instilling the
values and motives that the Department of Education laid once as a platform before.
The values and motives that goes to show students would have had more learnings
and would be more job equipped, job ready when they graduate Grade 12. That
students
would be more Globally Competitive and would have higher chances of getting a

3
job abroad than the ones that did not take up the curriculum. That the additional two
years
is worth it and would be a benefit not just to the students but for the student’s family too.

Objectives
The overall objective of this Phenomenological Study is to discuss the
experiences in taking college of Grade 12 students at Lyceum International Maritime
Academy for the School Year, 2017-2018. The result is used as the basis for here,
Maritime strand as the basis of students to prepare for their Tertiary Level.

Review of Related Literature

Personal Discipline can cultivate a mindset
(Success Consciousness, 2014) In this study in tertiary level,
Personal
Discipline can cultivate a mindset whereby the students’ rules deliberate their choices
rather than by the emotions, bad habits, or the sway of others that can affect one self. It
allows to reach the goals in a reasonable time and to live more orderly and satisfying
life.

Self Discipline is finding compelling reasons

(iqmatrix, 2016) Self Discipline is finding
compelling
reasons to do something then committing to see that task or activity through the very
end;
this requires having an internal desire, drive and motivation that propels forward toward
his or her goal. However, this is not all about the pursuit the goal, this is also controls
desires and impulses in an attempt to stay focused on what needs to get done to
successfully achieve that goal.

Self Discipline is a motivation that causes effective learning

4
(Risla, 2012) Students’ motivation is a never
ending thought for all teachers around the globe. Students who are not motivated will
not
learn effectively. They won’t learn retain information, they won’t participate and some of
them may even become descriptive. One of the major factors that can affect the
motivation of students is their intrinsic motivation which refers to their personal
enjoyment,
interest or pleasure.
Self Discipline as a form of empowerment and motivation
(Ascd, 2016) Students’ engagement is important in
learning and academic achievement. Motivation is self discipline that is related to
students’ ability to monitor and control their own behaviors. Students who are highly self
disciplined may able to focus on long term goals and make better choices related to
academic engagement. The concept of self discipline focuses on students’ own ability to
engage in particular behavior rather than reliance on external motivations, reward or
punishments. Researchers have looked at self discipline has examined the role of a
student in academic of success.

Self Discipline is influential

(Educmining, 2011) In this study, self discipline on
students’ knowledge and learning can influence both learning rate as well as knowledge
accumulation. Researchers found that a high disciplined students has the significantly
higher knowledge seemed more careful with respect to making careless mistakes.
Intellectual attributes (e.g. long term memory, ability to think abstractly) and
nonintellectual attributes (e.g. motivation, self discipline) both contribute to a student’s
academic performance.

Self Discipline is the key to the success of the chosen career

5
(Rebecca Fraser-Thill, 2017) Success is a dream of
every parent to their children. One factor to consider is Self Discipline to improve their
children’s performance in school. Self Discipline is a number of different personality
factors. Every factors have good and bad effects to test if they will reach the success
depending on how they handle it. Because only itself can reach the success through
proper self discipline. Self Discipline and Academics recent studies by psychologists
show that discipline continues to be important in the career well beyond the tween years
All in all, encouraging self discipline to the child is a good way to be successful.

Self-discipline is very important and have a big contribution to our lives

(Remez Sasson, 2001) Self-discipline is one of
the most important and useful skills everyone should possess. Self discipline gives you
the power to stick to your decisions and follow them through, without changing your
mind, and is therefore, one of the important requirements for achieving goals. Self
discipline is one of the important ingredients of success. Most people acknowledge the
importance and benefits of self discipline, but very few take real steps to develop and
strengthen it. It will be easier for you to strengthen your self discipline, if you understand
its importance in your life.

Building up a good self-discipline to reach the success

(Z. Hereford, 2006) The Foundation for
success is having self discipline because self-discipline is the ability to control your
impulses and be able to make yourself do things that needs to be done. This can
sometimes mean turning down instant gratification in favor of long term gain and
satisfaction. It teached us to focus our mind to reach our goals in life. In developing self-
discipline, first you need to start with baby steps, second you need to learn what
motivates you and what your need triggers are, third is to learn also what energized and

6
motivates you, fourth is to make certain behaviors a routine, fifth is to practice self-
denial, engage yourself in sport activities, then learn to play a musical instrument, get
inspiration from those you admire, and visualize the rewards.

Students' self-discipline affect their academic achievement

(Duckworth, A., & Seligman, M., 2005) Student motivation
and engagement play an important role in learning and academic achievement. Closely
related to motivation is self-discipline, the ability of students to monitor and control their
own behaviors. Students who are highly self-disciplined may be able to better focus on
long-term goals and make better choices related to academic engagement.

Self-discipline will overcome the students problem in school.

(Ranga Krishnan, 2014) Some students who appear
very intelligent do not do well academically or in life. Others, who appear less bright,
seem to do very well. Many of these children continued to have problems controlling
themselves years later, but several were able to overcome and build self-discipline.
Self-discipline is the only one among many personality variables, including extraversion
and energy level, that predicted college performance and correlated positively with
grades. Despite widespread appreciation of the importance of self-control and self-
discipline to student success, few schools provide training or advice on the subject as
part of their assistance to students in any form, not even print or online information
resource. The development of self-control and self-discipline is assumed to be not a
school issue, but part of a student’s personal growth and development as an
independent learner.

Intellectual Capacities of Seafarers

(The Manila Times, 2016) The article said that maritime
strand will enable the philippines to be produce more seafearers even without them

7
graduating in college. The training and education that they will be prodvided during their
stay in senior high will grant them with certification to be part of ship crews. Deped
closely monitor the schools that provide such specializations, they make sure that they
comply with the strandards set by the MARINA. however, the specialization aims to
encourage senior high school graduates to continue their studies up to college.

Intellectual Capabilities and Behavior

(Hyman and Wise 1988, 288) In an environment where aggressive
behavior dominates Intellectual capability this may reinforce aggressive measures.
Furthermore, it may distract attention from a more positive and affirming approach to
discipline, claiming that discipline underpins every aspect of school life.
Intellectual Capabilities and the education system
(The Manila Times, 2016) There are countess success
stories coming from people who works as sea fearer. Due to the improvement in the
education system, parents and other guardians who will be sending their kids to senior
high in the aim for their kids to be a sea fearer someday have been raising some
concerns. Some of the concerns are: Are there enough senior high schools offering the
maritime track? Alternatively, can a student who did not graduate in senior high school
with maritime track be able to proceed to higher education and take up a course leading
to a baccalaureate in Marine Transportation?

Schools in correlation with student’s intellectual capabilities

(up, 2016) It is said that 61 schools are identified to
implement that maritime tract in line with the k12 program. They could provide either of
the two specializations which are TVL and pre-baccalaureate track. Through this
educational improvement we would be able to provide our nation with more competent
sea farers. 12 schools will offer vocational tract. While 42 others will offer pre-

8
baccalaureate track. Along with this, the educational system that would be going along
all of these would be implemented as well offering Maritime type educations fit for the
strand.

Intellectual Capabilities and unlocking new worlds

(Sherrie Campbell, 2017) Unlocks the world to students by
introducing students to the possibilities, students should always strive to be just a bit
outside the comfort zone. All success begins as imagined outcomes, opportunities and
possibilities. Provides the brain with examples of correct grammar and helps students
become not only reader and writer, Neuroplaneticity students to have faster, making
new connections and quicker and a more effective process of information.

Good Traits and intellectual capabilities

(Vittorio V Busato, 2000) Intellectual ability, learning style,
Personality and achievement motivation as predictors of academic success in higher
education. Intellectual ability and achievement motivation were associated positively
with academic success, even after two and three years of study. All of these factors
have greatly affected academic successes in students throughout and the said can be
said for Maritime students who would posses the same attributes as the one mentioned.
Students who possesses those traits are likely to become high achievers in the field
they go into or in the business that they venture into in the future.

Nurturing Intellectual Capabilities

(Molinari, 2014) It is well established that the children
with short stature frequently have problems in cognitive development, personality, self
esteem and social relations. Further additional studies on larger samples are needed to
confirm these preliminary observations. The present study underlines the importance

9
of psychological support during growth. Intellectual capabilities should also be nurtured
during growth as the mind and its thoughts widens the more it is nurtured just like any
other gift or talent, per say, that would grow and be more complexed and it is nurtured
by the right people and the right hands and is used in the right ways by the individual
and the students, perhaps.

Gender and Intellectual Capabilities

(Lin Bian, 2017) The distribution of women and men
across academic disciplines seems to be affected by the perceptions of intellectual

brilliance. These findings suggest that gendered nations of brilliance are acquired

early and have an immediate effect on the children’s interest. Women are

underrepresented in fields whose member cherish brilliance.

Senior High School Track and Intellectual Capabilities

(clit, 2017) The chosen track of students would lead them

to the set of opportunites offered by the track and eventually the course the they

would take up, but it would still vary depending on the intellectual capabilities of

the students on how much of that opportunity, of that chance, would they be

getting for themselves. The ones with excelling intellectual capabilities in making

life choices and decisions would probably be the ones who would grab the said

opportunities for themselves and make that grasp a foundation for their ascension

into the life that they want, the dream that they have, the values that they would

stick to and to the dreams they want accomplished.

Love and Physical Discipline

(ncbi, 2017) Discipline is the structure that

helps the Student to fit into the real world happily and effectively. It is the foundation for
the development of the students own self-discipline. Effective and positive discipline is

10
about teaching and guiding a student not just forcing them to obey. As with all other
interventions aimed at pointing out unacceptable behavior, the students should always
know that the parent loves and supports him or her. Love builds discipline, physical
and personal, and with the love of people around a student, it would easier for the

child/student to build up discipline for himself/herself.

Pleasure and Physical Discipline

(ncbi, 2017) The Physical and Personal discipline is to
foster acceptable and appropriate behavior in the child and to raise emotionally
mature adults. A disciplined person is able to postpone pleasure, is considerate of the
needs of others, is assertive without being aggressive or hostile, and can tolerate
discomfort when necessary.

Race and Physical Discipline

(Jim Salter, 2017) Black students are removed from
classrooms at rates far higher than whites, "creating a new kind of separate and
unequal education," the report said. The Department of Education found that during the
2013-2014 school year, the most recent available data, black students were nearly four
times more likely to be suspended than white students. The discrepancy was even
higher in Missouri, where black students were 4.5 times more likely to be suspended.

Physical Discipline in Maritime Education

(PNTC, 2015) Aside from quality maritime education and
training, a successful mariner is also a product of academic preparedness and utmost
discipline. In many instances, the extent of an individual’s discipline is considered as

11
one of the most important measurements in the selection for employment of the
shipping companies and manning agencies, and for other institutions in general.
Other traits can be common, but the discipline is only seen in rare applicants, rare
Students, rare individuals, thus that makes the disciplined ones special and unique.

Physical Discipline in Schools

(ncbi, 2015) This view sees discipline as the sum of
educative efforts in their entirety, including the teaching process, the process of
character shaping, the facing and settling of conflicts and the development of trust. In
this sense discipline is a way of nurturing, developing and empowering people to act in
a certain manner, not because they are coerced into doing so, but because they freely
choose this as being in their own interests and those of the school. Discipline thus
becomes a key management function of the school.

Disciplined Marine
(gnb,2016) Academic and Physical Discipline come hand in
hand for the qualities and traits that must be possessed by Maritime Students, in SHS
and in College, and eventually, Maritime Applicants who are in line at companies trying
to get the job. Those two come hand in hand and one would be more difficult to try and
understand without having the other at its side. Physical Discipline includes the ability
to hold back any extra movements at times and academic discipline is pretty much self
explanatory.

Marine Discipline as an Example

12
(Eric Stevens, 2013) The Marines’ disciplined is one of a
kind
and it could be a good example towards the common communities around the world.
The same can be said for the discipline displayed by the students taking up the
marines.

Importance Of Discipline In Students

(ImportantIndia, 2016) Discipline in students is important as
It can greatly affect their overall performance in school activities, in the outdoor runs,
and
Even when they are not in school. Discipline is certainly a huge factor in a student’s
overall character and it affects the child in ways.

Students observing Discipline

(Indiacelebrating, 2016) Students should always observe
discipline as it can greatly alter school experience for the better. Students who break the
rules and are not disciplined enough performed poorly, academically and socially.

Different Ways on Observing Discipline

(Indiacelebrating, 2016) There are different ways on how a
student could observe discipline, physically, mentally among others.

13
Methods
The researchers use Phenomenological design as their design in ths study.
Based on Duckworth, A., & Seligman, M., 2005, Student motivation and engagement
play an important role in learning and academic achievement. Closely related to
motivation is self-discipline, the ability of students to monitor and control their own
behaviors. Students who are highly self-disciplined may be able to better focus on long-
term goals and make better choices related to academic engagement. The goal of this
study is to determine the meaning of that experiences that hold for each subject. By
using this design, the researchers seek to find understanding of the different element of
the research paper.
Informants
The participant involved ni this research is only limited for the grade 12 maritime
students of the Lyceum International Maritime Academy. Particularly, those studentsare
the ones that undergo into immersion.
Instrument of the study
The researchers used an interview guide composed of three categories namely,
Rapport questions, Central questions 1 & 2. All these categorieshave 13 questions that
talk about the experiences of G12 maritime students for the tertiary level. The Central
question focus on the experience o G12 like immersion and others.
Validity and Reability
The instrument used was conducting a interview and it underwent validation by
going through an interview in Lyceum International Maritime Academy, Batangas City.5
Interviwees were ask with the same questions and follow up questions for those who
have the simplest answers in the interview.
Analysis
Every conducted interview was transcribed word for word. Then content analysis
was brought outby encoding the data for particular words or content be seeking
between the text and label words, phrases and sections of the Transcript. A coding
matrix was designed to group for categories of the test while reading the transcript.

the maritime industry better and more careful in every task that they will do. Even
though it is much longer course because of the added two more years, this will cause a
skilful student in doing their profession.
A much experienced students will promote their talents and improve it. This is an
opportunity for the students to do their chosen course as a practice for their future in
their tertiary level life. We ensure that Before a student finish their degree in tertiary
