PHENOLIC MOULDINGS MADE FROM TYPE QX MATERIAL

1 Scope

1.1 This Defence Standard specifies the requirements for phenolic

mouldings made from type QX material.

1.2 Compatibility with all explosives in all environments has not been
established and design authorities should seek advice on particular
applications from the Defence Research Agency, Fort Halstead, Sevenoaks,
Kent TN14 7BP.

1.3 Attention is drawn to Def Stan 13-102 Testing of Materials which are
Required to be Compatible with Explosives.

1.4 This Standard is intended for quality control. Design authorities

should satisfy themselves that the quality defined in this Standard, in
conjunction with the relevant drawing, will satisfy the design
requirements. For aerospace applications, attention is drawn to the
provisions of both BS 2G 100 and BS 3G 100.

NOTE : It is recommended that Def Stan 93-26 Guide to the Use of Defence
Standards for Plastics Mouldings should be read in conjunction with this
Standard.

2 WARNING

This Standard calls for the use of substances and/or procedures that may be
injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. It refers only
to technical suitability and in no way absolves either the designer, the
producer, the supplier or the user from statutory and all other legal
obligations relating to health and safety at any stage of manufacture or
use.

5.1 In addition to the normal engineering requirements, the purchaser

shall state in the contract or order the following information:

5.1.1 The number of this Standard.

5.1.2 The Defence Standard, classification and colour of the moulding

material, ie INT Def Stan 93-75, Grade 1 or Grade 2, black or natural as
required.

parting lines, flash, gate positions, pin marks).

5.1.6 Position and dimensions of identification marks.

5.1.7 Any other requirement (eg mass or details of special mechanical or

electrical product performance test (see 8.5)).

6 Manufacture

6.1 The design of the mould will be subject to the agreement of the
responsible technical or supervising authority. The agreed design of mould
shall not be changed without their approval.

6.2 Before proceeding with bulk manufacture, the supplier shall establish
a moulding procedure for each design of mould which is acceptable to the
responsible technical or supervising authority. The supplier shall declare
the details of this procedure and satisfy the responsible technical or
supervising authority that the mouldings so produced comply with all the
requirements of this Standard. When a procedure has been accepted by the
responsible technical or supervising authority, it shall not be changed in
subsequent production without written consent. The declared moulding
procedure shall include the following details (see NOTE):

6.2.1 Material manufacturer’s designation of the material.

6.2.2 Mass (with tolerance) of the material loaded into the mould.

6.2.3 Time and conditions of preheating, with tolerances, if the moulding

material is heated prior to loading into the mould.

6.2.4 Type of mould (compression or transfer), including number of

cavities and its identification.

6.2.5 The mould temperature. The mould temperature shall be maintained

within ± 5°C of the declared value.

6.3 Records of all machine settings and observations shall be maintained

to the satisfaction of the customer.

NOTE : A moulding procedure established as satisfactory for a specified

material from one source, may not be satisfactory for that material from
another source.

7 Sampling and Frequency of Testing

7.1 During production, mouldings shall be batched. A batch of mouldings

shall be that quantity produced from one machine and from one batch of
material in one continuous shift. As a minimum, samples shall be taken
once per shift from each machine or after any halt in production, change in
batch of moulding material, or any other occurrence which may affect the
moulding conditions. Sampling shall be in accordance with BS 6001 and
BS 6002, the acceptable quality level (AQL) being agreed between the
customer and supplier.

7.2 When multi-impression tools are in use, samples shall be taken so that
mouldings from each impression are examined to the requirements of
clause 8.

NOTE : Separate mouldings will be required for the purposes of 8.4 and 8.5.
Mouldings used for these tests shall be subsequently discarded.

8 Test Requirements

All samples of the moulding production taken from any portion of the supply
shall be in accordance with clauses 4, 5, 6 and 7; and when tested by the
method specified, shall comply with the requirements given in table A.

8.1 Freedom from defects. The finished mouldings shall comply with the
following requirements:

8.1.1 They shall be free from foreign matter, surface imperfections,

cracks, blister, and resin rich or resin starved areas, when viewed with
normally corrected vision.

8.1.2 Cut sections shall show a well-consolidated uniform structure free

from cracks, voids, metal particles, or other foreign matter.

8.2 Density. When determined by Method 620A of BS 2782, the density of

the mouldings or pieces of the mouldings, free from inserts, shall be not
less than 94% of the maximum density obtainable from a water absorption
test specimen produced from the moulding material from which the mouldings
were manufactured.

8.3 Dimensions. The dimensions of every moulding shall be within the

tolerances specified on the relevant drawing. Measurements shall be made
not less than 12 hours after moulding, the temperature of the moulding
being maintained at (22 ± 3)°C.

8.4 Chemical requirements. Samples taken from any portion of the supply
shall comply with the test requirements given in table A.

ANNEX A

Method of Test for the Determination of Water Soluble Extract

A.1 Apparatus and reagents

A.1.1 250µm sieve to BS41O.

A.1.2 Analytical balance capable of weighing to 0.0001g.

A.1.3 250ml glass-stoppered flask.

A.1.4 Whatman No 52 filter paper

A.1.5 Glass Petri dish

A.1.6 Air-circulating oven capable of being maintained at (105±2)°C.

A.1.7 Desiccator containing activated silica gel.

A.2 Procedure

A.2.1 Reduce a fully representative sample of the mouldings to powder by

filing, milling, grinding, turning or drilling, taking care that no undue
heating of the material occurs. Sieve the powder, using a 250µm aperture
sieve, and use that portion passing through the sieve for the test.

A.2.2 Weigh to the nearest 0.001g, 5 ± O.1g (wO) of the sieved material.
Place the material in a 250ml glass-stoppered flask and cover it with ten
times its mass of boiling water. Stopper the flask and shake it so that
the powder is thoroughly wetted. Allow it to cool at room temperature for
1 hour, with occasional shaking. Filter the contents of the flask, without
suction, through hardened medium speed filter paper.

A.2.3 Pour the filtrate into a dish, and weigh. Record the weight (wl),
place the dish in an oven maintained at (105 ± 2)°C. After two hours
remove the dish and allow it to cool in a desiccator containing activated
silica gel. Reweigh the dish, (w2). Repeat this procedure at half hour
intervals until the weight (w2) becomes constant to within 0.001g.

A.3 Calculation of water soluble matter

A.3.1 Calculate the percentage water soluble matter using the following
expression:

W1 - W2
Water soluble matter (%) = x 100
W0

A.3.2 Record the water soluble matter as the mean of two determinations.
