Advent: A Time to be Holy

ebrated Holy Mass and gave the
Advent recollection on the first
Sunday of Advent for the leaders
of CFC Metro Manila.
The Advent recollection, held at the
Ynares Sports Arena on December 2,
had as anchor verse the Second Read-
ing for that day: “…and may the Lord
make you increase and abound in
love for one another and for all, just
as we have for you, so as to strengthen
your hearts, to be blameless in holi-
ness before our God and Father at
the coming of our Lord Jesus with
all his holy ones.” ~1 Thessalonians
3:12 - 4:2
The bishop expounded on the pas-
toral priorities according to St. Pope
John Paul II who wrote an apostolic
letter in 2000 titled Novo millenio
ineunte (At the Beginning of the New
Millennium). In this letter, the Pope
enumerated the pastoral priorities for
the new millennium. Bishop Pabillo
emphasized that these pastoral priori-
ties are very much relevant in modern
times, since the new millennium is
only 18 years old.
These pastoral priorities are holi-
ness, prayer, Sunday Eucharist, con-
fession, primacy of grace, the Word
of God, and proclaiming Christ.
1. Holiness
The Pope wrote that even in this
secularized world, there is a great de-
sire in people to be holy. The bishop
cited as example of this the desire of
throngs of people to visit the heart
relic of St. Padre Pio and to pray to
the saint. He explained that when
people sense that there is something
connected to holiness, the tendency
is to go there. Thus, many people
visit pilgrimage sites, holy places,
shrines of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
It is apparent that holiness is attrac-
tive to people even in these times of
materialism.
2. Prayer
The bishop asserted that there is
no holiness without prayer. Prayer is
both easy and difficult and all need to
learn how to pray. Communities such
as CFC should be genuine schools of
prayer. Like the clergy, CFC leaders
must be teachers of prayer because of
their acquired skill in praying. No mat-
ter what state of life one is, one cannot
teach prayer if he or she does not pray.
According to St. Pope Paul VI in
Evangelii nuntiandi, “Apostolic and
missionary fruitfulness are not mainly
due to programs and pastoral meth-
ods that are cleverly drawn up and
efficient, but is the result of the com-
munity’s constant prayer.”
3. Sunday Eucharist
For Catholics, the Sunday Eucharist
is essential to a truly informed and
consistent Christian life. However,
the bishop lamented the declining
attendance at Sunday Mass. He cited
a 1992 survey which revealed that
64% of Filipino Catholics heard Sun-
day Mass. However, in 2016, another
survey revealed that this figure has
drastically declined to 37%.
“I can shout myself hoarse, ‘Mag-

What touches us most in the
life of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz
Mahal is their “together-ness”.
They lived their married life to
the full, always open to new life.

clared saints by Pope Francis on
18 October 2015, the very first
couple to be canonized.
Before they met, both tried
to enter the religious life but
were rejected. Zellie was too
sickly while Louis had diffi-
culty learning Latin. They were
married in 1858 after having
known each other for only three
months. From the beginning,
they dedicated their marriage
to God to the extent that, while
living together as a couple, they
decided to remain celibate. But
a priest advised them that they
were obliged to follow the two
God-given purposes of marriage:
procreative and unitive.
The priest might have re-
minded them of the teaching of
St. Thomas Aquinas: “There are
some who say that intercourse
between married persons is not
devoid of sin. But this is he-

ON November 28, 2018, my mother, Leonita
Orteza Tianco Tale, celebrated her 100th year
birthday. She was born in 1918 in Bulan, Sor-
sogon, in Bicol. Her family moved to Iligan
City when President Quezon encouraged
migrants to settle in Mindanao, opening up
farmlands in the Land of Promise.
They were a closely knit family of hardwork-
ing parents and six children, five sisters and
one brother. Oh the stories they have regaled us
with. We never tired of hearing them. Over time,
all the sisters married and raised their families
elsewhere. Only their brother, our Uncle Ondo,
and his family remained in Iligan City.
I myself was born in Iligan City, and so, too,
were my two brothers, Rene and Earl. Our
family moved to Valencia, Negros Oriental,
when my late father was appointed Justice of
the Peace there. That's where we spent our
childhood, in the idyllic town at the foot of
Mt Talinis. That's also where I met God's gift
to me, my wife Babylou, whose father was a
long time mayor of the town.
My mother finished Pharmacy in the
University of the Philippines, and our small
botica (Farma-cia Tianco) also helped provide
for the family. I remember accompanying my
mother to buy medicines wholesale in the city
for retail in Valencia.
But mostly, my mother was a teacher.
Teaching was her first love. She taught at
Foundation Col-lege, now University, in
nearby Dumaguete City, became high school
principal, and eventually capped her career
there as Dean of Women. She also taught in
Holy Cross High School, one of two Chinese
schools in Dumaguete, and in San Pedro
Academy, the Catholic high school in our
town in Valencia.
There are so many ways a son can honor a
mother. The challenge is to pick that which
means much more to me than the zillion
other reasons.
First, she inculcated in us the value of excel-
lence, to do the best that we can wherever the
Lord places us. Excelsior! could very well be
her motto. It didn't matter how "lowly" the
task was, she simply asked us to be the best
that we can be.
Second, she showed us strength and mettle,
especially when my father passed away at age
58, still young by current standards. She was
then mostly left alone in Dumaguete, with
some house help, as my brothers and I were
in Manila. I had just started my new job in
Procter and Gamble, while my two younger
brothers were still in college. Because I was
also helping support my brothers through
Ateneo, there was little we could send home.
And so my mother had to be strong and
resourceful in finding ways to stay afloat.
She tried many things, including producing
and selling vinegar. My heart still bleeds
when I recall those times. But we all eventu-
ally came through by the grace of God. It
was a good thing when later, my youngest
brother Earl took early retirement from PAL
to relocate back to the province, to be close
to our mother.
Third, my mother's important role in helping
bring Couples for Christ to Dumaguete City.
When Babylou and I expressed our desire
to do that, she was our chief evangelizer. She
invited her former co-teachers and students
to be participants in the early CLPs there. And
when the Family Ministries were established,
she herself became one of the first Handmaid
of the Lord.
To top everything, she placed first priority
on prayer. I didn't really realize this immedi-
ately, as beyond the usual Mass, she was not
very showy about her prayer life. I came to
know about this only when one of the CLP
speakers, who we hosted in our Dumaguete
home, told me how he was so impressed with
my mother. He narrated that when he woke
up early at dawn, when eve-ryone was still
asleep, he saw my mother praying the Rosary
with the house help. We learned later that she
had been doing this every day.
During our rough times, we felt more secure
and confident, knowing that in my mother,
we have a dedicated intercessor, one who is
anchored on the greatest intercessor of all
time, the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Not everyone is given the gift of a century
for a lifetime. My mother is so blessed that
she has been enabled to celebrate that gift. We
thank Mommy for showering us with a love
that literally has lasted for that lifetime. But
most of all, we thank God our eternal Father
who has made it all possible.

CFC OSM Flies to a Mission to Puerto Princesa

ducted one of the last modules of the Character
Enhancement Program (CEP) at the home of the
Philippine Air Force’s Tactical Operations Wing
(TOW) West in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
The mission was made possible when BGen
Nestor Florente Rayos and his wife Mrs. Billma
Rayos felt the need to give the program to its
soldiers and dependents.
The CFC OSM Core Team, headed by Art
Alabanza, left for Puerto Princesa City on the
16th of November 2018 with other members of
the Core Team namely Carol Alabanza, Willy
and Imee Ona, Rudy and Paz Jimenez, Danny
