Dry bottom ash discharge + treatment systems

The question of how to use our resources more efficiently is at the heart of many developments.

Recovering ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals and glass from bottom ash through methods aimed at
maximizing separation rates and obtaining high-quality materials is a further step towards using waste as a raw
material resource.

Dry discharge offers significant advantages in this respect. On the one hand, the quality of recyclable metals is
improved. On the other, the fine fraction and fibres can be separated more efficiently from the coarse fraction,
making it possible to recycle them separately. A TOC of less than 0.5 % can be reliably achieved.

The MARTIN dry bottom ash discharge system consists of the following components:

· MARTIN ram-type discharger


· Air separator enclosed in housing
· Dust removal system
· Air system

The MARTIN ram-type discharger is operated without water. The bottom ash is discharged in dry form, directly
conveyed to an air separator and divided into three product streams over several stages:

· Coarse fraction containing recyclable metal


· Fine fraction < 1 mm (contains almost no metal)
· Bottom ash dust

The air separation area is enclosed. Negative pressure is set in the housing using the air supply system to
prevent false air from leaking into the furnace and dust from entering the boiler house. The exhaust air from the
air separator is conveyed to a dust removal system, where the fine fraction is separated. The exhaust air and the
bottom ash dust can be supplied to the combustion system as part of the overfire air. The fine and coarse fraction
are conveyed to the intermediate storage area, loaded onto lorries and sent for recycling. The coarse fraction has
a reduced dust content so that it can be transported to the bottom ash treatment facility by conventional means.

The MARTIN bottom ash treatment system is modular in design.

The tipping hall is used for acceptance and intermediate storage of the bottom ash. A wheeled loader and a
feeder supply the bottom ash to the treatment system. The downstream screener separates the bottom ash into
two fractions. Coarse bottom ash components are processed by the sorting unit. The residual fraction is
conveyed to the grading and separation equipment, which is designed for highly efficient extraction of ferrous
and non-ferrous metals, stainless steel and, optionally, glass. The extracted recyclables are collected in drop-off
boxes for intermediate storage. The treated bottom ash is transported to the loading terminal, where it is stored
and automatically transferred to the transport vehicle.

The mineral residues contained in the coarse fraction can be recycled, e.g. for use in road construction. The fine
fraction is also used as a construction material or landfilled.
