ITEM 1 PLANT DETAILS REMARK

Generators cooled by H2 are provided with seal oil

system for preventing the leakage of H2 to
atmosphere for the formation of explosive mixture
and to reduce the consumption of H2.

This system consists of tank, pumps, (Both A.C.

and D.C) coolers, filters and pressure regulators
to maintain the oil pressure at the seal body of
generator. Turbine oil is used for this purpose.

DC pump is meant to supply oil to the seals

during the failure of AC power supply during
emergency conditions.

pump-1.

Note: To avoid a temporary excessive pressure

build up in the piping system, air in the piping
must be slowly displaced with oil by starting and
stopping the pump till the Pr. gauges at the
generator i.e. MKW71 CP 511 and CP 521
indicate steady reading. Run the pump (1)

continuously.

7.1.11 During filling of the airside circuit, the seal oil

tank is simultaneously filled with seal oil via float
valve MKW03 AA 002. The float valve will close,
when the oil level reaches a pre-determined level.

7.1.12 With the pump running, perform venting of

following equipments:
 Signal pipes to the pressure measuring
devices
 Main bellows of differential pressure
regulating valves A1, A2.

7.2 Filling and Operation of H2 side seal oil circuit

It must be ensured that airside seal oil system is
in operation and seal oil tank has been filled with
oil. Following operations should be done to put
H2 side seal oil system in operation.

7.2.1 Open shut off valves provided in impulse pipe as

follows:
MKW13 AA 507Singal equalization ‘C’ valve
MKW13 AA 505 Air side oil signal ‘C’ valve
MKW13 AA 506 H2 side oil signal ‘C’ valve

cooler in service.

7.2.4 Charge both seal oil filters with oil as done in

case of airside coolers. Vent the filters by
loosening the venting screw provided on filter
housing. Keep one filter in service and other on
stand by.
7.2.5
Start H2 side seal oil pump. During initial
starting the pump, it should be started and
stopped to bleed the air from piping till the Pr.
gauges provided on generator indicate steady
reading.
7.2.6
Close signal equalizing valve MKW13 AA 507 at
‘C’ valve.
7.2.7
Perform venting of all impulse piping for pressure
gauges, pressure regulators ‘C’ and pressure
equalizing valve by opening vent valves provided
in system.
7.2.8
Keep H2 side seal oil system in continuous
operation.
7.3
Setting of Seal Oil Pressures
The setting of seal oil pressures is done when
generator is at stand still and seal oil temperature
after coolers are 20 to 300C. During this process,
adjustments of following valves are carried out.
ITEM 7 TEST METHOD REMARK
While setting the pressure, static head of
instrument and respective unit should be taken
in to account.
7.4 Adjustment of A1 Valve MKW11 AA 002
To adjust this valve, loosen lock nut at valve
stem. Turn adjusting nut to set A1 valve so that
seal oil pressure of approximately 1.5 bar above
the gas Pr. in generator is established at their
seals.
Note: Clock wise turning of adjusting nut
increase seal Oil Pr. at shaft seal and vice versa.

7.5 Adjustment of Orifice MKW71 BP 501

This Orifice is adjusted to keep ring relief oil
pressure above the seal oil Pr.
Adjust orifice MKW71 BP 501 and valve A1
MKW11 AA 002 so that the ring relief oil Pr. is
higher than seal oil pressure at shaft seals by
approximately 1 Bar.

7.6 Adjustment of ‘C’ Valve MKW13 AA 002

‘C’ valve is used to adjust seal oil pressure after
H2 side seal oil pump. H2 side seal oil Pr. is
higher than airside seal oil pressure at shaft seals
by 0.15-0.20m bar. This higher Pr. is required to
enable the pressure-equalizing valve to maintain
a constant seal Oil Pressure. ‘C’ valve is adjusted
by turning the adjusting nut as done in case of ‘A’
valve.
7.7 Adjustment of Pressure Equalizing Valves
MKW73 AA 001 and MKW73 AA 021.
7.7.1 Remove lower cap and loosen lock nut. Pressure
differences between air side and H2 side seal oil
pressures are in indicated by differential gauges
MKA06 CP 501 and MKA07 CP 501.

7.7.2 Adjust the H2 side seal oil Pr. by turning

threaded steam. Pressure is decreased by turning
it clock wise and increased by turning it anti-
clockwise. After adjustment, tighten lock nut and
replace cap.
ITEM 7 TEST METHOD REMARK
7.7.3 Make sure that position of upper threaded stem
has not been changed.

7.8 Adjustment of A2 valve MKW31 AA 002

7.8.1 Adjustment of this valve is done after adjusting
the valves A1 and C.

7.8.2 Stop seal oil pumps 1 and 2, standby seal oil

pump 3 will start automatically on interlock.
Adjust valve A2 in same manner as done in case
of A1 valve and the seal oil Pressure must be
same as when operating with A1 valve.

7.8.3 All adjustments should be checked during

pressurization of casing and rolling of TG set. If
required, fine adjustments can be made at a rated
casing pressure and machine running at 3000
rpm.

7.8.4 Lock all the valves after its adjustment by means

of locking screws provided.

7.9 Checking of Functioning of Pressure Switches

and Level Detectors

7.9.1 Following pressure switches and level detectors

are checked for its function

- Diff. Pressure switch across seal oil filter.

- Various pressure switches provided in the
system.
- Level detectors provided in pre-chambers
MKA06 CL 001 and MKA07 CL 001 – Functional
testing of this detector is possible only when
generator is depressurized.

- Remove hex plug from stator end shield located

near the level detector. Close shut off valve
MKW03 AA 501. Stop H2 side seal oil pump and
keep air side seal oil pump running. Oil level in

ITEM 7 TEST METHOD REMARK

generator prechamber will rise. Check the alarm
as soon as oil level reaches the level detector.

- If seal oil flows from the threaded hole without

an alarm, investigate the reason and rectify it.

7.9.2 After successful completion of this test, normalize

the valves and replace hex plug, making sure that
gas-tight seal is obtained.

7.10 Measurement of seal oil flow
