At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. identifying connotations and denotations
2. make samples of literal meaning or suggestive meaning of a word; and
3. use denotation and connotation in a sentence.

1. Review. Read each sentence carefully. Identify the phrase modifier and the word it
modifies.
a. Tall and handsome, the mysterious stranger looked like a movie star.
b. Upon hearing the news, Rebecca responded immediately.
c. Working overtime, we finished the project by the deadline.
d. Before she became ill, Claire enjoyed a comfortable, satisfying life.
e. Using the computer, I finished the report in two days.
2. Words to Explore. Students will match the underlined words in column A with their
meanings in Column B.
