President’s Letter
Hello & happy new year, Waltherson friends,

I am your new incoming President. So, let’s give a big round of applause to our former & long-time President, Rob
Walshe, as well as the folks who served on our board. In particular, Rob has been our President & board member for many
years. He is our go-to for so many questions, connections, rules & regs, & just about anything that comes up in our
neighborhood. I have been honored to serve with him for many moons. He will take a break to spend more time with his
family but will stay in touch as a member & former President. The rest of the board basically changed positions & we are
blessed to add two new folks: Lauren Whittaker & Raisa Rouse. As your former Treasurer, I will turn the books over at the next
board meeting.
As many of you know, this is not the first time I have served as President, so thank you for your vote of confidence to
allow me to serve again. It really touches my heart. For those of you who do not know me, my husband & I have been here for
20 years. I moved here from Willoughby Beach in Harford County & I grew up in Joppatowne. I started visiting this area & fell
in love with the beautiful homes & the friendly people. I bought the house in April of 1998, & immediately got involved in the
association & have been active ever since. Recently I took an early retirement last year; therefore I have a little more time to
devote to the things I love. I have many hopes & dreams for our neighborhood but I cannot do it alone; I need your help.
When we had the meet-&-greet in November at Zeke’s Café, we met a lot of new folks, shared ideas & signed on
many newcomers. It was great to see our regulars & to hear everyone’s thoughts. We are quite a diverse group, which is our
strength. We discussed the ideas of having block captains, what we want in future Waltherson gatherings, the new apartments
at Southern & Harford Roads, the businesses coming in, updating our bi-laws & of course, how to stimulate interest within the
community. There was a survey available which will direct us to know your passions. You may get involved as much or as little
as you desire; just be sure to express it. Together we can help resolve concerns but we aren’t here just to complain. We must
prioritize & find balance.
So, I look forward to a year of gatherings & new ideas. Waltherson meets quarterly as a group, but the board meets
monthly. Send us a note on Facebook, email, our website, or just call us or jot down your ideas & bring them to February’s
meeting. In the meantime, it’s winter. Please look out for your neighbors, especially those that may need a little extra help. Is
there an elderly person that you haven’t seen for a while; can you possibly go check on them? Do they need their sidewalks
shoveled when it snows? Is there someone coming in to spend time with them? Please be aware when new folks move onto
your street & welcome them. It’s always nice to be greeted when you’re new.
And lastly, I want to share a personal story & thank our Northeast Police Department, especially Officer Rodriquez.
My inside spirit spoke to me when I discovered an elderly woman walking alone on the highway & so I stopped to see if I could
assist her. She was so kind & in need of assistance; however she spoke no English & my Spanish is “muy poquito” (very little).
When I realized I wasn’t finding her home & we were lost, I knew exactly where to take her for help: our Northeast District
Police Station. They found Officer Rodriquez who is bilingual & within no time he was assuring her that she was safe & would
be brought back home to her family within no time. The look of relief on her dear face touched me to tears. Our Police
Department is there to help us. Over the holidays they worked extra hard, leaving their families behind in order to serve our
communities. Please remember to give thanks to them, to our Fire Departments, & to our Service & Care givers. Even a smile
goes a long way.
We will see you in February & don’t forget to get your 2019 membership dues in. You can mail a check or just bring it
to the meeting. The fee is only $12 per year ($10 for seniors). Your investment serves in many ways & gives you a right to vote
on decisions that affect us all. We are a very large area; over 2500 homes in our neighborhood, but our meetings are quite
small. This year, we are going to help stimulate more interests so that everyone can feel a part of your community.

NECOP – Northeast Citizens on Patrol

In Northeast Baltimore we have a district wide Citizens on Patrol program called NECOP. The
reasoning behind the COP program is that regular neighborhood patrols can make criminals feel
uncomfortable and drive them out of our neighborhood. Communities with regular NECOP
patrols, such as the North Harford neighborhood, also see significantly less crime than
communities with inactive patrols.

Participants meet at the Northeast Police station at 1900 Argonne Drive near Morgan State and
an officer will give you a direct number to keep them in contact with the Police. You would then
proceed to patrol the neighborhood in your car. Patrols normally go out each Thursday and
Friday from about 7:30 - 10:30. Anyone interested in the Citizens on Patrol program, please
