most amazing spots for us down a gravel
side road near our reception venue.
While we were having photos, our
guests arrived at our reception venue.
Our tables were styled with white chairs,
tablecloths and napkins with a sprig of
rosemary on top. Our recycled timber
centrepieces were filled with a variety of
greenery with seed lights wired through,
and the table numbers were slotted into
a wood round. We had a table with our

advice cards for our guests to leave us a
message and some advice! Our delicious
cake that Matt’s mum made sat on a

the ceiling. Outside, we had badminton set

putters for everyone to enjoy.
Everyone was entertained throughout

I love dancing, I secretly asked a group
of my girlfriends if they wanted to do a

dancing songs and had an instructor mash
together a tune and choreograph the
dance for us. It was just the best seeing
Matt’s face on the night, as he had no idea
about it at all! After this, our band arrived
and got everyone on the dance floor, and
we sang and danced the night away.
We were so incredibly grateful for

The super-knowledgeable Melissa Gladding, owner of FaceTime What’s great for your friend is not always great for you. Your

therapist wants you to know. Here, she talks about help you reach your skin goals at least 3-6 months before the big
self-confidence, internal wellness and, the most important day. You can do this by building a relationship with someone who
accessory to any bridal gown, healthy and radiant skin. tracks and understands your skin in the lead-up. This is what we do
best at FaceTime, with our personalised skin analysis, consultation
and skin plans.
A must in any bride or groom’s skin plan is rejuvenating LED
light therapy. Ideal for even the most sensitive skin, the Healite II
from Lutronic takes only 15 minutes but will give your skin that
bridal glow before you know it!
While taking care of our skin from the outside is important, it’s
also vital to look after it from the inside. Treat your skin holistically
and understand the link between the skin and other organs as well
as immune-system health. Our bodies operate as one unit, and
with our skin being the largest detox organ, what we see on the
outside is a direct reflection of what is happening on the inside.
There are many internal products on the market at the moment but
one of my favourites is the Osmosis Complete Digestive Enzyme.
Skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and eczema are all linked
to digestive/gut health. Matching our own pancreatic enzymes,
Complete will more effectively break down food, easing digestion,
improving mood, and increasing nutrition for a healthier you.
Muscle relaxants. If you have never had muscle relaxants like
Botox or Dysport before it’s best to trial the products at least six
months before your wedding. These injectables assist in many areas
but I find that brides are most concerned about their makeup falling
into the wrinkle ‘creases’ making them even more prominent. We
suggest brides and grooms trial the muscle relaxants ahead of time so
they can get used to the sensation. If you have had muscle relaxants
in the past, visit the clinic one month prior to the big day so we can
provide you with a wrinkle-free perfect complexion.
If you’re getting married in the warmer months or a tropical
climate, I also highly recommend muscle relaxants to keep
perspiration under control.
The final facial is important! Include a final facial one or two
weeks prior to your wedding. Make this a priority. Lock this date in
quickly and commit to it. This final facial will allow your therapist
to get in those final extractions and ensure your skin is healthy for
your wedding day.
Finally, as the big day draws closer, your wedding will be front of
mind. To avoid having all conversations with your fiancé revolving
around the day, plan some special date nights that have absolutely
nothing to do with the wedding. Enjoy being in each other’s
company without the stresses of the big day.

THINK ETIQUETTE
In times past, the mother of the bride made her dress selection first and then
shared her choice with the mother of the groom. If you are following this tradition,
remember the MOG also needs time to plan her choice, so try to give her as much
notice as possible to allow for any alterations or custom orders.

Photo by Robbie Gilmore When it comes to accessories, think elegant and understated. Depending on
whether you are going for a classic or contemporary feel, a hat or fascinator is worth
considering. Also think about the time of year – do you need a jacket or bolero, or
will a shawl or wrap be enough to keep you warm when the night is getting chilly?
Remember an evening purse or clutch bag – you will need somewhere to keep your
lipstick and, of course, some tissues! Footwear should complement your outfit,
while being comfortable to stand and dance in. Some elegant jewellery can add the
finishing touch to your look.

The Event Boutique designed and styled
this moody autumnal wedding shoot…
‘The inspiration was to merge a modern
theme with elegance and femininity. Black
stationery with a lace background served as
inspiration for all the paper design elements.
The dramatic circular wreath was crafted
with lush autumn-toned magnolia leaves and
delightfully complements the spectacular floral
whip. The luxurious table setting incorporates
lilac, gold and teal blue, alongside ethereal
florals and candlelight. We shot at dusk to
capture a beautiful dark and moody feel.’

Captured on Wellington’s rugged
South Coast, this dreamy styled shoot by
a group of talented creatives reveals a little
bit of magic…
‘Inspired by black velvet, the classic rose,
and a heavy grey sky, this dreamy and mystical
shoot gorgeously showcases the Wellington
coast. We wanted to capture the moody skies
and famous Wellington breeze to portray the
romance and mystery of a coastal wedding.
Muted hues of grey and cream, hints of orange,
and sophisticated black details stand out against
the wild windswept coastline. The powder blue
of the caravan bar and white lace of the gown
contrast with the dark tones, dramatic sealine,
and gold in the décor elements, giving the
natural setting a romantic feel.’

ADDING A PERSONAL TOUCH
Unlike many wedding venues, which come with pre-
arranged suppliers and décor, one of the many benefits of a
marquee wedding is that it’s easy to incorporate individual
touches and personality. Take a few minutes with your partner
to think about what makes your relationship special. It could
be a shared hobby, a love of nature or even the quirky way you
first met – all these elements can serve as inspiration for your
decorations, floral arrangements, and colour palette.
From photo booths to doughnut walls, ice-cream trucks
to a craft beer station, a marquee offers plenty of flexibility to
involve a range of vendors, or to put your DIY hat on. Perhaps

one up almost anywhere.
Before finalising your location, you need to ensure that
your marquee supplier can easily access the site. If in doubt,
have them check it out early on to address any concerns,
such as surrounding trees or shrubbery that may get in the
way when setting up your dream pavilion. You don’t want to
resort to a last-minute removal of your mum’s prized lemon

CHOOSE A REPUTABLE BAKER
Word of mouth is the tried-and-true
way to find a great baker – start by
asking your family, friends, caterers or
wedding venue for recommendations.
Once you’ve created a short-list, check
out their designs and credentials online
before setting up an appointment for a
tasting and to discuss the details of your
wedding (date, venue, guest numbers,
etc). Arrive at your consultation prepared
– take along any fabric/colour swatches
you have, images of your reception venue
or details of your theme, so your baker
can get a feel of your wedding aesthetic.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING
Choose your cake after finalising key
wedding-style decisions. You want a cake
that complements your wedding theme,
reception décor, gown, floral decoration,
and menu. Use these elements to help
inform the design and structure of your
cake. Keep the season in mind too when
choosing ingredients and finishing details.
For example, if you’re having an outdoor
summer wedding, buttercream icing
won’t withstand the heat as well as a more
robust fondant icing. Speak with your

decadent chocolate – and that’s just a
tiny sampling of the flavours on offer. Let
your taste buds do the talking; choose a
flavour combination you’ll love. You can
go for one flavour throughout, or have
something different on every tier, but
don’t forget to taste-test all fillings with
your baker before making your selection.
TIERS OF JOY
Traditionally, when wedding cakes were
fruitcake, the top tier was reserved for the
first child’s christening. Nowadays, many
couples opt to save the top tier for their
first anniversary. This is a very romantic
way to celebrate your first anniversary,
but be sure to inform your caterer so
cont:-
www.brideandgroom.co.nz 153
they can arrange to have the top tier
set aside for you. If your cake of choice
isn’t fruitcake, it’ll need to be frozen.
Discuss quantities and tiers with your
baker to find a suitable size and style
for the number of guests attending your
wedding. You don’t want to end up with
too little or too much cake! If you’re
dreaming of a lavish stacked wedding cake
but don’t have hundreds of attendees,
you can always incorporate dummy
tiers; your guests will be none the wiser.

PRICE IT OUT
Be honest about your budget. Discuss
this with your wedding cake designer,
and they’ll let you know what they
can create without breaking the bank.
Often, it’s the finishing touches on
the cake that will push the price up;
fondant icing is usually more costly
than buttercream, and elaborate sugar
flowers, shapes or specific colours incur

SWITCH IT UP
Fancy something different? Switch it
up with a whimsical alternative; cheese

antipasto and bread. Macarons, cupcakes,

are also sure to go down a treat.

A cake design should always be
inspired and unique. It should speak
to who the couple are and the elements
of their wedding, whether it’s the
florals, stationery, colour scheme,
or surrounding landscape.
Magnolia Kitchen created a cake
that was inspired by the elements of
the shoot in its entirety. Buttercream
icing creates an abstract oil-paint look
that is almost windswept, and leads
the eye from the bottom of the cake
up to the top. This colour palette
complements the blues and greys of
the wedding gown, and evokes the
waves from the coastline crashing
beyond. The cake is accented with
pieces of sugar rocks that reflect the
raw, wild feel of the setting, and edible
pearls, which complement the opulent
tone of the gown.

Inspired by beautiful Mount Maunganui
beach, Macarons & More created a cake
that captures nature’s hidden gems...
The rustically decorated sea-shell
cake showcases the treasures of the ocean:
shells, pearls, and deep, moody-blue hues
reminiscent of crashing waves. Made with
a rich chocolate filling, sandwiched with
chocolate ganache, and coated in blue-and-
white semi-sweet Swiss meringue buttercream,
this cake is a non-traditional delight. The
edible fondant pearls reflect the ocean theme,
and the collection of shells makes for a unique
underwater-inspired cake topper. Décor pieces
with hints of bronze, gold and white, ocean-
blue stationery, lush greenery and the multi-
hued palette of blush-and-white-toned flowers
pay homage to this deep-blue cake. The white
gown adds a romantic touch of elegance and
provides a delightful contrast to the cerulean
colour palette of the cake, rounding off this
cohesive shoot beautifully.

Despite having never visited Rarotonga, Nikki and Stephen knew it would be the perfect place to tie the knot with close
family and friends. Their tropical wedding was full of beautiful personal touches and island magic.
Nikki tells us more…
real wedding
Thirty-five of our guests joined us
on our plane ride to Rarotonga, and over
the following few days the rest of our
53 guests arrived. Before our big day,
we celebrated our hen and stag do’s on
the island, attended a cultural show, and
spent the day before the wedding relaxing
with guests on a snorkelling cruise.
We stayed and got married at Pacific
Resort on Muri Beach, which is a beautiful
boutique luxury resort with a relaxed
atmosphere. Our theme was a rustic beach
wedding. I handmade all our artificial
bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages
months in advance and packed these
delicately into our carry-on luggage. Our
colours were blush pink, ivory and navy,
while lace from my mother’s wedding
dress was entwined in my bouquet.
Our wedding day began with us
getting ready in different ends of the
resort, and then we had a first look
photoshoot. I will never forget the look
on Steve’s face when he saw me as his
eyes lit up and glistened with tears – he
couldn’t wipe the smile from his face.
cont:-
Tuk tuks picked us up and we set off
on our location shoot around the island
with our bridal party. Doing all our
photos before the ceremony meant we
had plenty of time after the ceremony to
mingle with our family and friends who
had travelled from afar. Upon arriving
back at the Pacific Resort, an island
warrior picked me up to lead me to the
vaka and begin my journey to the beach
ceremony at the front of the resort.
We chose to have an unplugged
wedding with no cameras or cell phones
to ensure our ceremony was intimate and
romantic. We included both our mothers
by asking them to do a combined reading
together. We couldn’t hold back our tears
of joy, overwhelming emotion and love,
as our ceremony was the most amazing
experience of our lives. Fresh frangipani
confetti was thrown as we walked back
down the aisle, sparkling wine was served
beneath the palm trees, an island maiden
dancer and a ukulele was played in
celebration. We also planted our very own
coconut tree during a planting ceremony.
Our reception was held in a marquee
in the resort garden. Fairy lights were
hung and fresh frangipanis, assorted
greenery and candles were at the tables.
A personalised bamboo wine charm and
handmade fudge welcomed guests to
their seats. Our cake was a cheese cake
combining layers of fresh cheese, and the
same knife was used from my parent’s
wedding cake-cutting 35 years earlier.
Eight kilograms of cheese, fudge, whiskey
and bubbly in my husband’s suitcase
didn’t leave room for much else other
than jandals, boardies and the essentials!
It was a given that our first dance be
fun, romantic and energetic, symbolising
our relationship. Jimmy Barnes’ Your

and we had all our guests dancing
