Sentence Structure Lesson Plan

Grade Level: 6th

Overview: Learning sentence structure is a very


important skill to learn when learning the
English language. It ensures that a student
can form clear sentences when writing and
speaking. Most sentences in the English
language follow the subject→verb→object
structure. This lesson will help teach the
students basic sentence structure by forming
sentences given only certain words. Students
will have to decide where the words fit in a
sentence in order to make a structured
sentence.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity students


should be able to:
● Identify the subject, verb, and object of
a sentence.
● Write sentences given a subject, verb,
and object.
● Explain what a subject, verb, and
object is.
● Name many different subjects, verbs,
and objects.

Standards: ●

Materials:
This plan assumes that the instructor has
access to the following materials:

● Overhead projector
● Clear overhead slides
● Dry erase boards/markers
● Paper/pencils

Procedures: Before the start of this lesson the instructor


should organize groups of 10 students for the
activity.
1. The instructor will first give a brief
explanation to students on why
sentence structure is important for
everyday writing, reading, and
speaking. (0:00-1:00)
2. Next, the instructor will explain to

students what a subject, verb, and


object is and will give examples of
each. They will then explain how the
subject→verb→object order structure
works. (1:00-3:00)
3. After the explanations the instructor
will get the students into their
pre-assigned groups. (3:00-3:30)
4. Once the groups have assembled the
teacher will write 9 words on the
board consisting of 3 subjects, 3
verbs, and 3 objects. (Example:
subject-”they”, verb-”have”,
object-”dog”.) (3:30-4:00)
5. The groups will then use their
dry-erase boards to write three
complete sentences using the correct
subject→verb→object order
underlining the verb, highlighting the
verb, and putting a circle around the
object. (Ex. .)
(4:00-14:00)
6. The instructor will then check off each
group to make sure that each of the
three sentences are written correctly
using the right sentence structure.
(14:00-14:30)
7. The instructor will then write the
correctly ordered sentences on the
overhead and then will ask for any
questions from the students.
(14:30-15:00)
8. Lastly, the students final task will be to
write their own sentence on a piece of
paper which will be turned in to the
instructor.

Evaluation/Assessment: The students will be evaluated and assessed


on each of the following:
● Accuracy of the sentences written
during the group activity
● Accuracy of the highlighting,
underlining, and circling of the
sentences.
● Correctness of the personal sentence
turned in to instructor.

Description

In order to come up with this lesson plan I researched which aspects of the English language
were most important for students of English as a Foreign language. Something I came across
was sentence structure. It seemed that it could be taught in a short amount of time but still be
understood clearly. I did more research on this lesson plans for sentence structure and came
across a reliable website that talked about sentence structure and examples of different
sentences. I trusted the website because it was a website from a college and had a .edu
domain.
