Story Problem 1

During a normal day, there are 280 planes taking off from the airport, but the airport
is a lot busier during Christmas. During, the Christmas holidays, about 336 planes take
off every day from the airport.
1. During the Christms holidays, the airport opens 12 hours during each day, how
many planes take off fromthis airport in each hour ?
Answer : Normal days have 280 planes takes off Christmas have 336 planes take off/ day.
In Christmas holidays have open hours: 12 hours
? : how many planes take off/ hour.
12 hours = 336 planes
1 hours = 336 planes
12
1 hours = 28 planes
So, there are 28 planes take off from this airport each hour during the
Christmas holidays.
2. In average, each planes take 240 passengers and 12 tons cargo. How many
passengers depart from the airport every hour during the Christmas holidays?
Answer : 1 plane = 240 passegers and 12 tons of car go
28 planes = ? passengers and ? tons of car go
1 hours = (28 x 240 passenger) and ( 28 x 12 tons of car go)
= 6720 passenger and 336 of car go.
So, there are 6720 passenger and 336 of car go depart from the airport every
hour during the Christmas holidays.
3. Compared with a nomal day, how many more passenger depart from the airport
in a day during the Christmas holidays?
Answer : Christmas holidays have 336 planes and normal days have 280 planes
and 240 passeger in average.
? : How many more passenger depart from the airport in a day during the Christmas
holidays?
Solution : (Christmas holidays - Normal days) x passenger
( 336 – 280) x 240 = 56 x 240

= 13. 440 passenger.

So, there are 13.440 more passenger depart from the airport in a day during the
Christmas holidays.
4. During a normal day, there are 782 passenger in average that are late for their
plan each day. However, during the Christmas holidays, there are 1.835 passenger
that are late for their planes each day which caused delay of 14 planes. How many
more passenger are late for their planes in each day during the Christmas
holidays?
Answer: In a normal day, there are 782 passenger in average that are late plane and Christmas
Holidays, there are 1.835 passenger that are late planes.
? : How many more passenger are late for their planes in each day during the
Christmas holidays?
Solution: There are 1.835 passenger ( Christmas day) – 782 passenger ( Normal day)
= 1.053 passenger.
So, 1.053 more passenger are late for their planes in each day during the
Christmas holidays.
5. The airport administration did a study and found than an additional 5 minutes of
delay in the overall operation of the airport is caused for every 32 passengers that
are late for their lights. What is delay in the overall operation if there are 832
passengers late for their lights?
Answer : If there are 832 passenger late : 32 passenger late = 26 passenger
26 passenger x 5 minutes of delay in the overall operation =130 minutes.
So, there will be a delay of 130 minutes in the overall operation of the airport.
6. Write an equation using “ x ” and then solve the equation. On the New Year, there
were 7.580 ton of cargo loaded in the morning. The total weight of cargos loaded
on the day weighed 12. 997 tons.
Answer : On the new year, there were 7.580 tons of cargo loaded in the morning and the
total weight on the day is 12. 997 tons.
? : Write an equation using “ x ” and then solve the equation
Solution : 7. 580 + x = 12. 997
x = 12. 997 – 7.580
x = 5.417
Story Problem 2

1. Before a party, Ashley bought a tray of 24 water bottle; each bottle has a capacity
of 12 oz. There are 30 guests. If each guest drinks 1 cup of water, is there are
enough water for all the guests?
Answer : 1 cup of water = 8 fluid ounce(fl oz)
: 24 bottle x 12 oz = 288 oz of water. So, Ashley bought 288 oz of water.
: 30 cups = 240 oz.
1 cups = 8 fl oz
= 8 fl oz x 30 cups
1 cups
= 240 fl oz
So, the guest will be drink 240 oz. There is enough water for all the guests.
2. Josh mixed 2 cartons of orange juice, 3 bottles of soda water and 6 cans of cocktail
fruits to make a fruit punch for the Christmas party. Each carton of juice is 1
gallon 3 quarts. Each soda water bottle contains 6 quarts. The cans of cocktail
fruit are 2 pints each. How much (measured in gallons) of fruit punch did Josh
made?
NB : 2 pints = 1 quart
4 quarts = 1 gallon

Answer : 2 cartons x 1 gallon 3 quarts = 2 gallon 6 quarts = 3,5 gallon

= 6 quarts = 1,5 gallon
4 quarts
= 2 gallons +1,5 gallons = 3,5 gallons
: 6 quarts x 6 quarts = 36 quarts = 9 gallons
4 quarts
( 2 carton x 3 quarts)
: 6 quarts cocktail x 2 pints = 12 pints = 6 quarts = 1,5 gallons
2 pints 4 quarts
So, 3,5 gallons + 9 gallons + 1,5 gallons = 14 gallons
Josh made 14 gallons fruit of punch.
3. Emily made a pot of cream of pumpkin soup for thanksgiving dinner. She put 5
cups of cream in the soup. She poured the soup into 24 small soup bowls. How
musch cream (measured in oz) is used for each small bowl of soup?
Answer : 1 cup = 8 fl oz
5 cup x 8 oz = 40 oz
= 40 = 5 = 1 2 oz
24 3 3
1 2 oz . of cream is used for each small bowl of soup

4. There are two pitchers of lemonade in fridge. There are 1.5 gallon of lemonade in
one pitchers and 9 quarts of lemonade in the other pitcher. How many cups of
lemonade of language are there in the fridge ?
Answer : 1,5 gallon = 6 quarts = 12 pints = 24 cups
(1,5 x 4 quarts = 6 quarts)
(6 quarts x 2 pints = 12 pints)
(12 pints x 2 cups = 24 cups)
9 quarts x 2 pints = 18 pints = 36 cups
18 pints x 2 cups = 36 cups
The total cup of lemonade is 24 + 36 = 60 cups
So, There are 60 cups of lemonade in the fridge.

5. A person is supposed to drink half a gallon water of everyday. Abby drank 15

small cup of water today. If the capacity of the cup is 3.5 oz., How much more
does Abby need to drink today?
Answer : 1 gallon = 128 oz
½ gallon = 128/2
= 64 oz
0,5 gallon = 64 oz
15 x 3,5 oz = 52,5 oz
64 oz – 52,5 oz = 11,5 oz
Abby needs to drink 11,5 oz. more water
6. At a grocery store, tasting cup are used to let customer try new brand of chicken
