DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
FIRST INTERNAL TEST, MARCH – 2018
Subject:
Subject Code: 15ME64 Branch & Semester : MECH 6TH
Design of Machine Elements-II
Max. Marks : 30 Date: 27-03-2018. Time: 1.45 PM to 2.45 PM

Note: Answer TWO full questions choosing ONE question from each module.
The questions that are not attempted in IA test shall be submitted as assignment on 02.04.2018
Q.
Module - I Marks
No.
1 The central horizontal section of a crane hook is
a symmetrical trapezium of 80 mm depth, the
inner width being 50 mm, and outer width being
30 mm. Estimate the stress intensities in the
extreme fibers of the section when the hook
carries a load of 20 kN. The load acts 50 mm CO1
from the inner edge of the section and the center PO1
of curvature is being in line with the line of
action of the load.

15
2 Two steel cylinders having nominal diameters of 25 mm inner diameter, 50 mm outer diameter
and 50 mm inner diameter and 75 mm outer diameter are to be assembled with tangential stress at
inner surface of outer member being limited to 83 MPa. The length of the hub is 100 mm. CO1
Determine the required interference and the tangential and radial stresses at the inner and outer PO1
surfaces of the two members. Also find the axial force required for press fit and the torque
capacity of the joint. 15
Module-II
3 Select a V-Belt drive to transmit 9 kW from a shaft rotating at 1200 rpm to a parallel shaft to run
CO2
at 300 rpm. The diameter of smaller pulley is 120 mm. The centre distance between the shafts is
PO1
1.2 meters. 15
4 Design a helical compression spring to support an axial load of 3000 N. The deflection under
CO2
load is limited to 60 mm. The spring index is 6.The spring is made of chrome vanadium steel and
PO1
factor of safety is equal to 2. Find all the parameters of the spring and list them. 15
Course outcomes:
Students should be able:
CO1: To establish design process, material selection, and determine stresses in curved beams and compound cylinders.
CO2: Design mechanical systems involving springs, belts and pulleys.
Programme outcome:
PO1: Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering to arrive at solutions.
