3
Introduction The Hygrometer is a continuous, on-line instrument for the
measurement of moisture content in gas. It is designed to fulfil a wide
range of applications and provide all the facilities normally needed in
the Monitoring or control of moisture in gases.

The standard instrument covers the range -100 to +20 °C dewpoint.

Dual alarm facilities are provided which may be configured by the
user n terms of alarm set point, normally closed or normally open.
Current loop analogue outputs are available, 4 - 20 mA, isolated from
earth.

Sampling System The comprehensive sampling system specifically manufactured under

this contract utilises the Hygrometer for the analysis of water
dewpoint/moisture content in hydrogen gas.

The system is configured for the analysis of dewpoint at pressure and

ambient temperature. The sampling system components are housed
in a enclosure suitable for wall mounting in either an indoor/outdoor
location.

1
The sampling system components comprise of the following:

i) Solenoid Valve (SOV1 & 2) - Provides selection of inlet and

outlet flow path for the generator sample gas.

ii) Coalescing Filter (F1) - Protects the dew point sensor from
liquid molecules and particulate matter.

iii) Dew Point Sensor - Measures the moisture content of the

sample gas passing over it. Housed in a 316 stainless steel
sampling block.Pressure rated to 300 barg

iv) Flowmeter & Valve (FM1) - Provides indication and user

adjustment of the sample gas flowrate. Range 1-7 L/min of H2 @
20 °C & 3.5 bar.

v) Solenoid Valve (SOV3 & 4) - Provides selection of inlet and

outlet flow path for the gas drier sample gas.

vi) Flow Metering Valve (FM1) - Allows user adjustment of the

gas drier outlet flowrate.

EExd Switch The EExd switch consists of a 3 position switch fitted to a painted
flameproof aluminium alloy enclosure suitable. The switch is for
selecting either the generator (position 1) or gas drier (position 2)
sample gas flowpaths for moisture measurement within the sampling
system or for allowing the selection to be possible through a remote
switch (position 3).

Ceramic Moisture Sensor The Easidew Tx I.S Hygrometer utilises the Michell Ceramic Moisture
Sensor. This sensor is manufactured from metallised ceramics using
thin and thick film technologies to produce a moisture sensor which is
virtually chemically inert with inherently fast response, high calibration
stability and high resilience to corrosive environments. The Easidew
Tx I.S Hygrometer measures humidity by monitoring the electrical
response exhibited by the Moisture Sensor to variations in partial
pressure of water vapour of the gas composition to which it is
exposed

Calibration Michell Instruments' calibration facilities are amongst the most

sophisticated in the World and have been recognised for their
excellence by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) UK.
The Humidity Calibration Laboratory is accredited by UKAS for dew
point measurements in the range -90 to +20°C dew point (Calibration
Accreditation Number 0179) and is traceable to the National Institute
of Standards & Technology (NIST) USA for dew point measurements
in the range -75 to +20°C dew point

4
Installation The Monitor requires an operating environment of 0 to 50 °C and up
to 90% RH.
Installing the Monitor
The Monitor case is designed for panel mounting. For panel
mounting, a square cut-out of 92 x 92 mm should be made in the
panel to be used.

The Monitor case should be inserted into the panel cut-out from the
front and secured using the two cross-head securing screws at the
inner top right and inner bottom left of the front casing. Clockwise
rotation of the screws rotates the securing clip into position then the
screws should be tightened down evenly until the Monitor is securely
fastened to the panel.

Removal is achieved by rotating the screws counter-clockwise, which

will recess the securing clip into the case extrusion - All electrical
connections through the rear panel are made via plug and socket
terminals to facilitate easy removal of the Monitor when in service.

For more information on the configuration and operation of the

monitor, please refer to the Annexure 3: Display Manual

Installing the Sensor The Moisture Sensor requires an operating environment of -20 to +60
°C and up to 98% RH.

The Moisture Sensor is provided with a 5/8" UNF mounting thread for
screwing into its flow-through sampling block to measure a
representative portion of the gas under test

The Moisture Sensor body is designed to mate with the bonded seal
provided .

NOTE: Just prior to installation of the Sensor, unscrew/remove the

protective plastic cover and retain for future use. Take care to prevent
any contamination of the Sensor before installation (do not touch or
handle the guard).

The bonded seal should be placed over the Moisture Sensor before it
is screwed into the sampling block.

Although the operation of the Moisture Sensor is not sample flow-rate

dependant it is important to ensure that the flow velocity through the
sample line connecting the sample source to the sampling block is
high enough to avoid long time lags in response to changes in
humidity at the sample source. We therefore recommend a flow-rate
of 1 to 5 litres/minute at s.t.p. (or equivalent at pressure) be set when
the Moisture Sensor is mounted in the standard sampling block.

Finally connect the Moisture Sensor cable to the Sensor using the
three pin connector already provided on the cable. The connector is
of the bayonet fit type and has a locating lug such that it can only be
connected to the Moisture Sensor in the correct orientation. The
instrument is now ready for configuration and use.

For more information on the connection and operation of the sensor,

please refer to the Annexure 2: Easidew I.S Tx Manual

Operation Operation of the Hygrometer is very simple as long as necessary
precautions are taken to protect the Moisture Sensor from damage.
Statistical information indicates that the vast majority of failures are
caused either by incorrect sampling methods, sampling positions or
inadequate protection against dangerous substances.

Sampling Hints The Moisture Sensors are designed to operate in a flowing gas
stream. They are provided with a sampling system which will enable a
small sample of process gas to be diverted past the Moisture Sensor
before returning to the main gas stream or being bled off to
atmosphere.

Always use the shortest run of pipework practically possible between

two points. Use the lowest diameter pipework possible to reduce
response time, we recommend 6mm OD pipework. A sampling flow
between 1 and 5 litres per minute at s.t.p. will be satisfactory for
the Moisture Sensor to operate correctly.

The general rules to be adhered to when arranging a gas sample

supply line are as follows:

a) Ensure the sample is representative of the gas under test.

The sample take-off point should be as close to the critical
measurement point as possible.

b) Minimise dead space in sample lines.

Avoid overly complicated or unnecessary pipework. Where
possible build up sampling pipe specifically for the job and do
not use pipework previously installed for another application.
Dead space in sample lines increases response time by
holding water molecules which are slowly released to the
passing gas sample.

c) Remove any oil, liquid and particulate matter from the gas
sample.
Particulate at high velocity can damage the Moisture Sensor.
Similarly, at low velocity they may "blind" the Moisture Sensor
and reduce its response speed.

d) Use high quality sample pipe and fittings.

We would recommend that, wherever possible, stainless steel
pipe work and fittings are used. This is particularly important
at low dewpoints since other materials have hygroscopic
characteristics and absorb moisture on the pipe walls, slowing
down response and in extreme circumstances giving false
readings

6
Response Characteristics The quoted response characteristics of the Moisture Sensor are not
necessarily representative of the response speed attainable in your
application. Many factors will affect the speed at which the
Hygrometer will give a satisfactory result. However, nature is on your
side if, like the vast majority of applications, your Hygrometer is being
used to detect an increase in moisture content of your sample gas.
That is because it is much easier for the Moisture Sensor to detect an
increase in moisture content than to respond to a decrease. This is
similar in principle to the way it is easy to make a sponge wet, but
more difficult to dry it out afterwards. Most materials which are not
hygrophobic have similar characteristics and it is these which prevent
the Hygrometer from responding in a real-life application quite as
quickly as under test conditions.

However, since response characteristics from dry to wet are orders of

magnitude faster than from wet to dry, the effective response speed
of the system to leaks, ingress of moisture etc. is very fast indeed. In
a real life application such as dryer Monitoring or glove box
Monitoring the Moisture Sensor will respond in a few seconds to an
increase in moisture content.

In practice, the time taken to dry down a Moisture Sensor from

ambient conditions to the operational dewpoint level of the process
will normally be shorter than the time taken to dry down the process
itself. Therefore when the Moisture Sensor is installed into the system
prior to system start-up there is normally no time lag before
representative test results are obtained.

If a new Moisture Sensor is installed into an operational system for

example a gas dryer exit pipe via a sampling pipe with particulate
filter, then typically fifteen to thirty minutes should be allowed for the
pipework, filter and Moisture Sensor to reach equilibrium with the
sample gas passing through.

Which Gases to Measure The Hygrometer, by nature of its design, is suitable for measurement
of the moisture content of a wide variety of gases. In general, if the
gas (in conjunction with water vapour) is not corrosive to ceramics or
base metals then it will be suitable for measurement by the
Hygrometer.

High purity gases will not be contaminated by the Sensor. It has no

components which are likely to outgas (epoxy, plastics etc.) and
therefore is safe for use in critical semiconductor and fibre optic
applications.

High pressure samples may be measured up to a maximum of 10

bar. Make sure that the correct pipework fittings are used and that the
bonded seal provided is used to seal the radial face of the Moisture
Sensor/sensor block seal.

Similarly the Moisture Sensor is suitable for measuring samples

below atmospheric pressure. Care should be taken at joints and pipe
fittings that no leak exists which could allow ambient air to
contaminate the sample gas

7
Operating the Sampling Prior to operation, check all connections are in accordance with the
System installation instructions and ensure the sample gas is available and
the power supply is switched on.

Proceed as follows:

1. Select either “Mode 1” (Gas from Generator) or “Mode 2” (Gas

from Drier) on the EExd switch to allow the required sample
gas to flow through the sampling system. If selection of the
sample gas is required to be made via a remote switch then
select “Remote” (for Remote).

2. Set the sample gas flow rate through the sampling system by
adjusting the metering valve (part of flowmeter, FM1) to
nominally 4 L/min as indicated on the flowmeter. Note: only
when “Gas Drier” is selected then adjust the metering valve
(FV1) to the required gas vent flowrate.

3. Allow sample tubing and filter to purge for at least 15 minutes

before attempting stable measurements.

Operating the EExd The EExd switch is simply operated by turning the switch to either
Switch position Mode 1, Mode 2 or Remote

The switch positions denote the following:

Mode 1 – to select sample gas from Generator
Mode 2 – to select sample gas from Gas Drier
Remote – to select sample gas from remote switch.

8
7
Maintenance
Routine maintenance of the Hygrometer is confined to regular re-
Maintaining the calibrations. This work can only be done by exposure of the Moisture
Hygrometer Sensor to sample gases of known moisture content. Calibration
services traceable to national humidity standards are provided by
Michell Instruments' UKAS accredited Calibration Laboratory located
in Cambridge.

The frequency of re-calibrations required in order to maintain the

performance of the Hygrometer is primarily dependant on the
composition of the gas to which the Moisture Sensor is exposed i.e.
content of liquid and particulate contaminants, corrosive elements,
etc. In most applications annual re-calibration ensures that the stated
accuracy of the Hygrometer is maintained.

Moisture Sensors are fully interchangeable with their Monitors.

Maintaining the measurement accuracy of the Hygrometer in
applications where it is installed as a permanent online Monitor is
therefore simply a case of exchanging the Moisture Sensor for a
freshly calibrated one which will be supplied with a detailed certificate
of calibration traceable to national standards.

Moisture Sensor inter-changeability is also not effected by Moisture

Sensor cable length.

Maintaining the Sampling Routine maintenance of the sampling system is confined to filter
System element replacement and regular re-calibration of the moisture sensor

Filter Element Frequency of filter element replacement is primarily dependent upon

Replacement the composition of the gas the filter is exposed to i.e. liquid and
particulate contaminates corrosive elements etc. Therefore, we
recommend that the filter element be changed on a six monthly basis
to ensure the accuracy of the Hygrometer.

To replace the filter element, proceed as follows:

1. Isolate the sampling system from the sample gas supply

2. Unscrew and remove the filter bowl and element.
3. Fit the correct replacement element and replace the filter
bowl.
4. Resume normal operation in accordance with sample flow
"start-up" procedure.

Moisture Sensor Frequency of re-calibrations of the moisture sensor is again primarily

Replacement dependent upon the composition of the gas the sensor is exposed to
i.e. liquid and particulate contaminants, corrosive elements etc.
Therefore, we recommend that the moisture sensor be re-calibrated
on an annual basis to ensure the accuracy of Hygrometer.

To replace the moisture sensor, proceed as follows:

1. Isolate the sampling system from the sample gas supply.
2. Unplug the sensor cable, unscrew and withdraw the sensor
from its sampling block.
3. Fit a new re-calibrated sensor ensuring the bonded seal is
positioned between the sensors and sampling block.
4. Plug in the sensor cable and resume normal operation in
accordance with sample flow "start-up" procedure.

OPERATION
Operation is very simple assuming the following installation techniques are adhered to.
Measurement range and analog output
The standard Easidew TX I.S. is delivered with the 4 – 20 mA output signal set to cover the
range –100 to + 20 °C dew point. Please note however that the transmitter output range can
easily be changed to cover any dew-point range or to provide an output in terms of moisture
content in the range 0 - 3000 ppm (v).
Non standard ranges can either be programmed at the factory or by the customer using the
Easidew Communications Kit (EA2-CK),which can be purchased from Michell Instruments or
your local representative, and Easidew application software (Downloadable at www.michell-
instruments.com). The Application software help file will provide detailed instruction on how to
perform this task.
Dry down.
If the Easidew TX I.S. is installed into a new application then the time taken for the sensor to
dry down from ambient conditions to the operational dew-point level of the process will
normally be shorter than the time taken to dry down the process itself.
However if the Easidew TX I.S. is installed into a application which has previously been purged
with dry gas then there may be a significant time required for sensor dry down. The exact time
taken will depend on a number of factors such as target dewpoint, construction of sampling
system (see below) and flow rate of the gas.
Sampling Hints.
Be Sure the Sample is Representative of the Gas Under Test: The sample point should be as
close to the critical measurement point as possible. Also, never sample from the bottom of a pipe
as entrained liquids may be drawn into the sensing element.

3
2
Minimise Dead Space in Sample Lines: Dead space causes moisture entrapment points, increased
system response times and measurement errors, as a result of the trapped moisture being
released into the passing sample gas and causing an increase in partial vapour pressure.

Remove Any Particulate Matter or Oil from the Gas Sample: Particulate matter at high velocity

can damage the sensing element and similarly at low velocity, they may "blind" the sensing element

and reduce its response speed. If particulate, such as degraded desiccant, pipe scale or rust is

present in the sample gas, use an in-line filter.

Use High Quality Sample Tube and Fittings: Michell Instruments recommend that wherever

possible, stainless steel tubing and fittings should be used. This is particularly important at low dew

points since other materials have hygroscopic characteristics and adsorb moisture on the tube

walls, slowing down response and in extreme circumstances, giving false readings. For temporary

applications, or where stainless steel tubing is not practical, use high quality thick-walled PTFE

tubing

MAINTENANCE
Routine maintenance of the Easidew TX I.S. is confined to regular re-calibration by exposure of

the Easidew to sample gases of known moisture content to ensure that the stated accuracy of the

Easidew is maintained. Calibration services traceable to the National Physical Laboratory (UK) and

the National Institute of Standards and Technology (USA) are provided by Michell Instruments.

HDPE GUARD
The HDPE Guard provides protection to the dewpoint sensor. It is designed to show any

contamination and the guard should be changed if the white surface becomes discoloured.

When replacing the HDPE guard care should be taken to handle it on the black part only.

Replacement guards can be provided. Please contact Michell Instruments or your local

distributor quoting part number EA2-HDPE-PK10.

WEEE and RoSH

The Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Directive, and the Restriction of

Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive place new rules upon European manufacturers of

electrical and electronic equipment. The Directives aim to reduce the impact that electronic

devices have on the environment.

Michell Instruments are aware of the WEEE and RoHS Directives, and have investigated their

requirements. Michell products are currently exempt from the RoHS Directive, however all

future products will be developed entirely using compliant materials. Furthermore, Michell is

taking active steps to remove non-compliant materials and components from existing products

wherever possible.

Michell is also progressing towards full compliance with the WEEE Directive. In the short term

this will result in additions to product labelling, though in the long term customers may be

required to return certain instruments for treatment at the end of their working life.
