3.1 Method of Loading

3.1.1 The test load may be applied by means of a jack which obtains its reaction from
total weight of jack-in machine body that heavier than the required test loads.

3.1.2 The jack-in machine pile damper is statically locked with a steel dolly. The machine
short sleepers will be lifted and the ground contacted long sleepers will act as
supporting base ( as shown in figure 1)

3.1.3 The hydraulic jack (as shown in figure 2) will be push upward to obtain reaction or
required loading.

3.1.4 The load will be measured by a calibrated load gauge and also by a calibrated
pressure gauge in the hydraulic system. The load cell may be attached to the
hydraulic system in order to obtain digital result of the pressure.

3.1.5 The jack and load gauge will be carefully aligned so that the load applied is co-axial
with the pile

3.1.6 The arrangement of the apparatus above the test pile is shown as figure 2.

3.1.7 The jack-in machine will be properly leveled to ensure that the centre of gravity of
the kentledge is on the axis of the pile. The nearest edge of the crib supporting the
Kentledge stack will not closer than 1.3m to the surface of the test pile
CITY PILING SDN BHD (671791-H)

3.1.8 When reference frame, all anchor piles will be at a distance of at least three (3) test
pile shaft diameter from the test pile, centre to centre, and in no case less than 2m.

3.1.9 This spacing may need increasing in certain situations where knowledge of the
absolute value of settlement of an individual pile is essential to design.

3.1.10 Where a pile to be tested has an enlarged base the same criteria will apply with
regard to the shaft and, in addition, the surfaces of anchor pile shaft will not be
closer than one-half (V2)of the diameter of the enlarged pile base to test pile base.

3.1.11 If the anchor piles are to be permanent working piles, their level will be observed
during application of the test load to ensure there is no residual uplift.

3.1.12 Where ground anchor are employed with reference frame, no part of the anchor
transferring load to the ground will be closer to the test pile than 3 test pile shaft
diameter.

3.1.13 Where the pile to be tested has an enlarged base, the criterion will apply with
regard to the pile shaft and, in addition, no section of the anchor transferring load
to the ground will be closer to the pile base diameter.

3.2 Measurement of Settlement

Settlement will be measured by one the followings methods

3.2.1 Level and Staf

a) The level and the scale of the staf will be chosen to enable reading to be made
to an accuracy of 0.5mm
b) A scale attached to the pile or pile cap may be used instead of a leveling staf
c) A datum will be established on a permanent object or other well-founded
structure or deep datum point

Method Statement for Maintain Load Test (Jack-In-Machine)
d) The datum will be situated so that only one setting up of the level is needed.
e) It is preferable that the datum will be duplicated in case one is inadvertently
demolished.
f) The datum will not be afected by the test loading or other operations on the
site.

3.2.2 Reference Frame

a) A frame will be supported on two foundations or stakes placed sufficiently far
from the pile and the reaction system as to be unafected by ground movement
resulting from the test; the distance will be not less than 3 test pile diameters
and in no case less than 2m.
b) The foundation or stacks will be placed at a sufficient depth below ground to be
unafected by movements of the reaction system and movement of the ground
caused by moisture changes.
c) The measurement of the settlement is made by dial gauges fixed to the frame
and bearing on the top of the pile or lugs or other reference point on the pile to
register the movement of the pile.
d) If preferred the gauges may be fixed to the pile and bear on surfaces on the
reference frame.
e) Reading will be taken to an accuracy of 0.1mm
f) During the test, observation of any movements of the stakes with reference to a
datum as in (a) above will be made by means of a level and staf.
3.3 Procedure
3.3.1 The engineer requiring the test to be performed will state the working load and
prescribe the stages of loading.
3.3.2 It is convenient to make the increments of load about 25% of the working load, up
to the working lad, and appropriately smaller thereafter.
3.3.3 The engineer will also state if the pile is to be unloaded and reloaded after
completion of any stages of loading.
3.3.4 If it is intended to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile, the engineer
make an estimate of this value to enable the necessary weight of Kentledge ot the
appropriate reaction system to be provided.
3.3.5 For each stage the load or increment of the load will be applied as smoothly an
expeditiously as possible.
3.3.6 A reading of the time and settlement will be taken when loading commences and
readings will be made at suitable intervals as the load increases.
3.3.7 When the load for the stage is reached, time and settlement observations will again
make.
3.3.8 The load will then held constant and settlement readings continued.
CITY PILING SDN BHD (671791-H)
Method Statement for Maintain Load Test (Jack-In-Machine)
3.3.9 A graph of settlement versus time will be plotted as the test proceeds, and the trend
of the curve will indicate when movement has decreased to an acceptably rate.
3.3.10 The settlement at this point will be taken as the settlement under the applied load
for the purpose of this rest.
3.3.11 A rate of movement 0.25mm/h may be taken as the limiting rate for normal
purposes.
3.3.12 When the limiting rate of settlement has been reached, a further increment of load
will be applied or the pile will be unloaded, whichever is required.
3.3.13 During unloading, readings of time and settlement will be made at suitable intervals
and, after removal of the load, readings will be continued until the movement
efectively ceases.
3.3.14 Where method (a) is used a longer period of observation will be required
appropriate to the precision of the reading
3.3.15 On completion of the necessary stages of loading a pair of graphs showing load and
settlement versus time as abscissa will be plotted as indicated in figure 1. A graph of
load versus the settlement at the end of each stage of loading will be plotted as in
figure 5.

3.4 Statutory safety requirements

(General Duties of Employees, Section 24, Occupational Safety and Health Act, 1994)

3.4.1 Site specific safety requirements, as set out in the contract; and the main
contractor’s Environment, Safety, Health and Security Plan.
HSE Officer
3.4.2 HSE Officer will coordinate all safety-related activities at the work site, and ensuring
that all safety requirements are complied.
Pile Cutting
3.4.3 Cutting of piles will be executed by using hammer and hand breaker. The process
involves hoisting of surplus pile. The potential hazards and the respective
precautions are as below:

1. THE KENTLEDGE SYSTEM

1.1 The Kent ledge system consists of a main girdle simply supported at both ends. A system of cross beam is
place on top of the main girdle and orthogonal to it. The cross beam is also simply supported at this ends.
Concrete blocks of weight two tons each are stack on top of these cross beams to provide the necessary
reactive load. The loading is applied by jacking the pile with hydraulic jack against the Kent ledge system.

2. THE MEASUREMENT SYSTEM

2.1 The pile top settlement is measure by means of calibrated dial gauges within accuracy of 0.01mm. a
mechanical hydraulic pump is use to jack-up the reactive load. The load applied is measure by a calibrated
pressure gauge.
2.2 Two scales are attached to the reference frame and pile to measure any movement of the reference frame
with reference to the datum markers establish outside-the test area.

3. LOAD TEST PROGAM

3.1 Maintained load test method is used for testing the piles up to a maximum load of two times the pile
working. The loading sequence is shown in table below.
