ABSTRACT

With the advancement of technology, industrial automation has become a primary focus of many industries
throughout the world. Industrial automation is basically the use of control systems, such as computers or
robots, and information technologies to improve productivity and gain a better-quality product using
minimum man force. The use of automation system helps to increase efficiency, collect better data, and
reduce lead time, workers safety and reliability. That is why almost every industry throughout the world is
trying to implement this system. Our paper focuses on the effects of industrial automation system in
Pakistan. The proposal is about research on number of industries in Pakistan that are implementing this
advance approach and that have already implemented it. The paper shows a methodology of problems
regarding the implementation of automation system and research methods for deriving a proper conclusion.
It could show the effects on industries that have implemented this system and help the industries that are
trying to implement it in Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION

Automation is the technology by which a process is performed using minimum man force using the help of
computers and robotics. It is also defined as the use of various control systems for operating equipment such
as machinery, processes in factories, boilers and heat treating ovens, switching on telephone networks,
steering and stabilization of ships, aircraft and other applications and vehicles with minimal or reduced
human intervention.
Industrial Automation
Industrial automation is the use of control systems, such as computers or robots, and information
technologies for handling different processes and machineries in an industry to replace a human being. It is
the second step beyond mechanization in the scope of industrialization.
History
It was first use in 1624 when self-driven machines advanced grain mills, furnaces, boilers, and the steam
engine created a new requirement for automatic control systems including temperature regulators. Later in
the late nineteenth and twentieth century and with the advancement in technology, people started to use
computers and robots in industries to increase their productivity rate and minimize their man force. As a
result it caused many changes in the business world.

3
METHODOLOGY

The methodology that will be applied in this proposal will acquire information and deduce results about the
effect of industrial automation in industries of Pakistan.

Problem statement
The reason we are writing a proposal for this particular research is because we came to know about the
problems Pakistani industries are facing when they implemented industrial automation and started firing
unneeded workers.
As we know that most areas of Pakistan especially in industrial areas, occupation of majority people are
workers, so with an increase in unemployment people start to dislike this newly implemented system by
industries. It also created a negative effect in society as well.

For example, when industries like Forward Sports pvt ltd and Starpak pvt ltd first implemented automation
system, they fired a lot of their workers which created a negative effect of these industries in the society.
Although their quality was improved after using robots ands CNC controlled machines instead of suing man-
force.

Hypothesis
Our hypothesis includes the answers related to job unemployment and social effects of industrial automation
to the society.

Objectives and Aims

Our overall objective is to provide a proper and thorough research on industrial automation and its
importance in industries of Pakistan. To do this, we first have to know about how to properly implement this
system in such a way that it benefits both the industry as well as create a positive effect in the society.

Our aim is to give solutions to these problems to help industries that have implemented this system and that
are implementing this system in the near future.

4
BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE

We read a research paper on the significance and of effects of Industrial automation system by Mustafa
Hafeez Mir in which he concluded the significance of automation system and its benefits to the society. He
concluded about how:
“The world population gradually started to spike in the eighteenth century. Prior to industrial revolution all
the work was done manually, and the workers had to work longer hours especially in heavy industries which
manufactured heavy machinery. With the increase in population, there was an increase in the number of
demands to respective industries. So, they had to hire new workers to meet their require demands which was
not in their favour. However, in the nineteenth and twentieth century, people thought if they use computers to
do their jobs, then unemployment will increase.
So, many people thought that automation will bring new jobs because their claim is that technology always
fruit employment.”

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

.

Collection of Data
For the purpose of this research, and in order to achieve the objectives primary and secondary data will be
collected. The secondary data will contribute toward the formation of background information, needed by
both the researcher in order to build constructively the project and the reader to comprehend more
thoroughly the survey outcome.

Primary data will be collected in two ways. Firstly, a questionnaire survey will be conducted with workers.
Secondly, interviews will be also carried out with management of the industry that implemented the
automation system.

Sampling Design

Mostly one wants to study the entire population, but it is impossible and consumes a lot of time.
So, we will be studying sample in both the questionnaire survey and interview survey.

5
Questionnaire survey
To complete our research, we will be taking a questionnaire survey for the collection of data and derive
proper conclusions.
The questionnaire is given in the appendices below in which the workers will be asked questions regarding
the use of automation systems in industries. We will be asking both from the workers who were fired as a
result of automation system from the industries as well as from the workers who were not fired after
implementing automation system.
The questions will be asked in such a way that the respondent would have a variety of answers from it.

Interview survey
We will also be taking an interview survey from the management of the industries which implemented this
advance system and why they felt the need to adopt it.
We will also ask them about the benefits as well as loss they get after the industrial automation system.

PUBLIC HEALTH SIGNIFICANCE

 Automation improves the quality of product for the better use of public
 It reduces the percentage of defects in a product which may cause harm to customers
 It reduces waste and is thus also safe for environmental pollution.
 It also benefits industries which results in reduction of price.

6
BUDGET AND MOTIVATION
 We are going to do 10 questionnaires and 10 interviews in Forward Sports pvt ltd, Sialkot and 10
questionnaires and interviews in Starpak pvt ltd, Sialkot.
 We’ll need study leave for two weeks for fieldwork.
 The transcription service will transcribe the 20 interviews.
 We’ll analyse the transcribed results.
 We’ll writing up in our research allowance time.
