Reflection Paper
Reading is one of the most vital skill that a human must acquire for living it is where
all of the human skills are anchored. Thus, as an individual who belongs to an educational
institution it is important for us to teach students on how to read, by this we went to Dońa
Nenita Elementary School to teach nonreader or slow leader students.
My student was sitting beside her brother when I first met her. Her name is
_______ she is a grade 3 pupil. She is a shy type individual who lacks confidence to read.
Based on my diagnostics, I have noticed that she still not yet familiar with the alphabet,
she is just trying to predict (tagna-tagna) whenever I will ask her for a particular letter.
Perhaps, it is because of her lack of skills in reading that hinders her to socialize. She is
also afraid to be scolded if she may mispronounce the letters that she had read.
When I start teaching her, I really set the mood healthy for her to be comfortable
with me. She struggles in letter recognition. During that time, I have limited our scope with
just 3 three letters to ensure that she will understand. However, we still find difficulties in
identifying those three letters she really is difficult to teach. By that, I really feel so
challenge. I keep on saying to myself that, there is no child who is dull. I know she will
find her metacognitive skills that she may be able to acquire skills on thinking how she
can learn. She really needs to be closely monitored and be taught closely on alphabets.
She must be expose to charts and audio visual materials every day. As what Thorndike’s
law of exercise emphasizes that constant encounter of information causes more retention.
I also have asked her if does her parents do teach he at home, and she answered
no. “Busy man si mama naga panguha ug sisi unya si papa kay naga bantay sa fish cage
sabado lang ga uli”, she said. So I have just realized that it is due to lack of training and
fosters the child may have been behind in some skills that is necessary from them to
acquire. It is also important for the child to have skills in interpreting visual symbols for it
is the foundation of reading. That is why when I used to teach my student I have also let
her write the letters that I am asking her to read. I really want to teach her more for I feel
sympathy towards my tutee however, we lack time. Still, I am hoping for her progress.
Reading is indeed important for everything lies on it. It is the backbone of all
understanding and learning. In all means of communication and transmitting knowledge
reading serves as the foundation.
