Judging the house of action (karma-sthana)

In the last post I described how to interpret the results of the house of fortune
( bhāgya-sthana ), according to the teachings of Kalyāna Varma in his Sārāvalī . Today I
write this article which summarizes other principles taught by Kalyāna in chapter thirty-
three of his book and which talk about how we can interpret the tenth house,
called karma-sthana , the home of action or occupation.
Below are his teachings:
1. One should compare the strength of the tenth house from the lagna and the moon and
take the one that holds the most strength. If the lord of such a house is strong, the
individual will prosper in his actions (karma ), otherwise he will face the decline
( śloka 2).
2. The nature of the sign occupying the ten (aquatic, centipede, quadruped or biped), its
shape (ram, bull, lion, etc.) and the places indicated by such sign should be considered in
determining its results. Similarly, by analyzing the grahathat governs ten, we can identify
the kind of career the individual will follow ( ślokas 3-6).
3. Kalyāna says in the seventh śloka that the ten occupants 'results from lagna were
described in an earlier chapter (cf. 31) and that therefore he will describe the ten
occupants' results from the Moon. Among the ślokas 8-13 he describes the results of the
individual occupation of each graha , in ślokas 14-18, 19-22, 23-25, 26-27 and śloka 28,
he deals with the conjunctions of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus in
the tenth house.
4. Among ślokas 29-48, Kalyāna describes the results of trigraw yogas (conjunctions of
threegrains ) occurring in ten, whereas in lolokas 49-61 the results of the chatur-graha
yogas(conjunctions of four grahas ) are outlined in relation to this same house.

5. A very interesting yoga is described in śloka 62, in which the ten of the Moon must be
occupied by a malefic to receive the look of beneficial shoots . The individual born under
such a yoga is a doctor, Purohit (Priest of the family), or an astrologer a misleading
depending on the situation of grahas involved.
6. Kalyana says that all effects previously described by him throughout the chapter will
prove especially auspicious event grahas beneficial are looking to ten of the Moon, while
evil cause impediments in such results, which will not be full ( Sloka 63). He also talks
about how the malefics are auspicious in houses three or six in relation to the lagna or the
moon, whereas the opposite is indicated by their occupation in houses one, eight or
twelve ( śloka64).
7. In śloka 65, Kalyāna describes how we should determine the professional occupation of
the individual. In this case, one should note the ten houses from the lagna and the moon
and select the strongest one, the same should be done for the lords of these two houses.
8. The sign that occupies the tenth house, as well as the other divisions thereof, that is, the
tenth house of the other vargas (divisional maps), helps in delineating the type of career
that the individual will adopt. Kalyāna speaks about this in ślokas 66-80, describing from
aries to fish. Therefore, according to the emphasis of a particular sign, one can determine
in which the individual will deal.
9. Lastly, in śloka 81, people are described who will be the source of financial gain for the
individual according to the occupation of the grahas in the tenth. Already in śloka 82,
Kalyāna describes a dhana yoga (combination for fortune) that we also find in the Bṛhat
jātaka of Varahāmihira, which consists of the occupation of strong grabs in houses one,
two and eleven.
Taking these principles into consideration, it is possible to predict the results of
the tenth house efficiently.
