Shopping Tips From A Reader

ISTOCKPHOTO/CATLANE
Dear Merrie,
I loved your recent article about bargains and Victorian
decorating on a budget, as I can identify with that!
If you go to an auction and lose an item for lack of funds, don’t
be discouraged. There’s always tomorrow. Go on and learn from it.
Look in the back rooms of little out-of-the-way shops for
bargains that need TLC for a low price. You may see a piece that
captures your heart, as well as your pocketbook. Persevere. Keep
the faith and you will eventually find what you’re looking for.
I agree with shopping at Goodwill, thrift shops and Salvation
Army, as well as my favorite antique shop. However, estate sales are
not good for bargains, I have found.
I’ve also shopped in thrift stores for used drapes in velvet,
brocade and tapestry. These make wonderful upholstery.
Kathy
Peebles, Ohio

P.S. Read Victorian Homes for help in decorating until you’re

satisfied. Then read more and save each back issue for reference.

Dear Kathy,
Thank you so much for these tips for shopping on a budget! All your ideas are
wonderful and I especially like your encouraging spirit. It’s definitely possible to
decorate your home without ‘breaking the bank.’ By following these suggestions,
owners of historic homes might have the funds needed when they have to repair a
leaky roof or install a new heating system. Sage advice and thank you!

Blessings,
Merrie Destefano

uilt in 1874, this
gorgeous Eastlake-

home originated
as twin mansions,
occupied by Eli Hoyt and Freeman Shedd.
Hoyt and Shedd, in addition to being best
friends, were also business partners and the
producers of Hoyt’s German cologne, a
Victorian scent. Nine years later, the home
underwent its first major renovation, as
builders introduced Queen Anne influence
by way of mirrored brick carriage houses
and new porches.

According to Bruce,
the property “was
in great disrepair”
when he purchased it.

Fast-forward another three and a half

decades. In 1919, the home was used as a
hospital for wealthy locals. Mothers had their
babies delivered here for a flat $5 fee. The
Shaw hospital remained open into the late
1960s. Forty years later, Victorian enthusiast
Bruce Macaulay purchased the home from
Gail (Shaw) Thompson, whose family
operated the health facility.
Bruce remembers his first acquaintance
with the home. “The house was on and off the
market for six years,” he says. “On an impulse,
non-functioning” he says, adding that the “electric

Scraping
Away the
Years
For historic homes that have
passed through several sets of
hands, it’s fairly likely that the
wallpaper you see isn’t original to
the home. But beneath the new
covering, the old wallpaper lies,
waiting to be found. Bruce calls
the stripping away process “a
treasure hunt” and his process
was simple and straightforward.

First, Bruce filled a spray bottle

with hot water and laundry
detergent. Using his spray mixture,
he saturated the area he wanted
to uncover. Then, he allowed the
mixture to sit for fifteen minutes,
softening the top coat of wallpa-
per. Finally, he used a putty knife
to scrape away the layers.

Simple as they are, the fresh

garlands add a distinctive
Christmas flavor to the room.
“Throughout my decorating,
I layered greenery with pine,
boxwood and holly,” Bruce says.
“These make for a variation of
textures and colors.”

A lmost as if it were meant to be, back in
December 2012, Claire Barham began her
search for a new home that would include space
for her start-up cookery school. She was looking for a
small house with some. Choosing a home with five bedrooms was never
part of the plan. But from the moment when Claire first entered her Victorian home, she fell
in love. “I loved the character and the light and it shouted ‘Christmas’ to me,” she explains.
“There was a beautiful staircase to make a grand entrance, a great space for a tree and an
elegant banister just waiting to be decorated.”

CLASSIC CHRISTMAS
Upstairs, the classic feel continues. “When
I moved into the house, it only had one
bathroom, so I decided to lose some space
from one of the bedrooms and create a
new bathroom,” explains Claire. Her own
bedroom is peaceful and spacious thanks to
the proportions. Featuring an en suite and
dressing room, the space flows really well and is
decorated in beautiful rose pink and mint.
“The house has always had plenty of visitors
over Christmas, and I play host for the three
festive days. Christmas eve is very relaxing with
supper in the kitchen. I share out the jobs on
Christmas day. For the main event, we have
starters in the kitchen, as it’s a natural gather
space. Dinner is then served in the main dining
room, then it’s presents by the fire before we
relax once again,” says Claire. “We have a lot
of fun here. It’s a very special house for a very
special time of year.”

Signature baubles become a festive addition to

table place settings.

It was Birdie’s early foray into fairs
and trade shows that introduced her
to a calmer style at Christmas. “We
are overwhelmed by choice and color
when buying. So, I have reverted to soft
colors and more natural materials. Also,
I think a decorated tree must blend
into the room, not stick out like a sore
thumb.”
The north Norfolk coast is very
special—large parts of which are
designated AONB, an area of
outstanding natural beauty, with the
added bonus of ancient unspoiled
villages, huge vistas, salt marshes and
nature reserves. It is an enduring and
popular holiday destination, as well.
The thriving agricultural area possesses
some very interesting residents,
including the Queen at Sandringham
and the Duke and Duchess of
Cambridge at Anmer Hall. Birdie
and her husband shared numerous
childhood memories of happy days,
boating and exploring the beaches.
They were keen to re-create those
nostalgic memories for their children, so
they decided to buy a holiday cottage.
The family initially rented around

dramatically along the way. “We found
the perfect house,” confesses Birdie,
“but it was a substantial Grade II listing.
The farmhouse had been restored
and modernised by Norwich architect
Anthony Hudson.”
The house was in excellent condition.
Birdie made minor changes by blocking
up an inconvenient doorway, adding
additional electric outlets, and extending
the kitchen. The open-plan kitchen and
dining area was once an attached dairy
milking parlor. The space has since
benefited from covering the chilly tiled
floors with oak boards. Upstairs, Birdie
installed wool and jute carpets for a

Boxing Day is likely to include a ham,

and more walking. The tall Nordmann

garlands and pink glass ornaments from

and fireplaces are simply adorned with
branches, with a ribbon of tiny lights
adding sparkle to the stairs. “I’m a great
believer in the tradition of bringing
greenery into the house to relieve the
grey of winter,” says Birdie. She favors
multiple shades of green which echo
both the seaside and the countryside.
Birdie’s distinctive, confident
decorating style developed from her
training at Percy Bass, and Sibyl
Colefax and John Fowler. Her clients
relished her skill at creating especially
comfortable and elegant country
interiors. She often mixes the old with
the new, grand pieces alongside simpler
pieces, and then ties it all together
with a palette of gentle colors. Classic
English textiles are often paired with
large French mirrors—their mottled
mercury glass casting soft reflections.
Her décor experience certainly made
moving from one large house to another
a much easier task than one might
imagine. Still, Birdie believes that “some
clash is good, and one needs rough and
smooth textures throughout a home.”
Using her keen designer’s sense, The weeks before Christmas are such
a busy time at her shop and café that

SWEET &
HOLIDAY DÉCOR TIPS FROM DESIGNER
MICHELLE SHEN.

ftentimes, opulence is synonymous with
overabundance, but that doesn’t have
to be the case for your Christmas décor.
You can achieve a classic, holiday look with a few simple
additions and take some of the stress out of preparing your
home for the season at the same time. Michelle Shen of AM Dolce Vita Design
shares some of her tips to keeping her home sophisticated, welcoming and
festive during the holiday season.

THE COLOR PALETTE

The color palette you choose will set the foundation, and Michelle’s black and
white base with gold accents promotes a clean and elegant ambience throughout
her home. It also prevents her from having to switch out all her existing décor,
because her holiday palette complements the existing one. “Black and white
works with our living room’s overall neutral color palette and eclectic style,” says
Michelle. “It also reflects my pursuit of hygge: simplistic, nothing superfluous,
with no frills or anything over the top.”

WINTER 2018 55

VH-1811-54-61-SIMPLE.indd 55 9/5/18 5:52 AM

To accommodate the size of the foyer, Michelle
picked a tall, skinny tree to create a “wow”
factor when guests enter her home. The pink
ornaments complement the space and add an
unexpected pop of color.

However, this doesn’t mean you can’t stray from the Once you’ve chosen your color palette, you can focus on

would recommend when it comes to styling your Christmas
décor,” says Michelle. “Have a grounding color palette and THE TREE

simply, where you have the space for
it. “There is no rule when it comes to
which room the main Christmas tree
should be placed in,” says Michelle.
The foyer, for example, is a prime spot
to place a tree if you want to make a
statement as guests are coming through
the door, but the living room may be
better if you want a larger tree in a cozy
spot near the fireplace.
Next come the decorations, which can
include lights, garlands and ornaments.
Michelle likes to start with lights and
a textured, but modest garland for a
layering effect. “While a garland helps
define a tree’s silhouette, it shouldn’t be
the focal point of your tree,” she says.
Her ornaments reflect the room’s color
palette to keep things cohesive and
neutral, but the varying shapes, sizes and
textures attract the eye.
Rather than adding more décor
around your tree, use what’s already
going to be there as part of the display,
such as presents. Use wrapping paper
with a similar color palette and add
touches of greenery, small ornaments or
let the paper speak for itself. Not every
package needs to have frills.

THE MANTEL

A Colorful Christmas
Other than your tree, your fireplace
mantel is one of the main focal points in
your living room. If you prefer to make 5 COLOR COMBINATIONS TO CONSIDER

“Placing our Balsam Fir outside our

THE TABLE
The key to prepping your table is to
start early. Give yourself a couple days
before the gathering to try out different
placements. “I usually start decorating
our holiday dining table two nights
before,” says Michelle. “That gives
me time to make adjustments and buy
missing pieces, if needed.”
Pink-stemmed glasses, white plates
and a white table runner make up
a neutral foundation for Michelle’s
simple and elegant setting. A single
vase of flowers, vintage brass, Lucite
candlesticks and gold ornaments add
a touch of shine and chic. “I keep the
dining pieces neutral—white porcelain
dinnerware and linen napkins—and
layer on greenery and flowers consistent
with that year’s color palette for festivity
and finally let the food and wine take
center stage,” says Michelle. You don’t
have to fill every surface of the table
with dinnerware and décor to make a
statement. This classic table exemplifies
how fewer pieces keep the setting open
and inviting.

personal touch.
Michelle’s bar cart is one of her
own vintage finds, and its gold
color brings a touch of shine and a
sophisticated air to the room. “It’s
always a great hit and conversation
starter when serving our guests
from the bar cart,” says Michelle.
“Adorning it with a few baubles and
maybe a string light or thin garland
was all that’s needed to add festivity.”

OLD VS. NEW

Another idea to keep in mind is to
use what you already have. Rather
than purchasing all new pieces for
the holidays, dust off those vintage
candlesticks you’ve been keeping in
a cabinet and bring them out for
display. “I am a big fan of mixing
the old and the new,” says Michelle.
“Incorporating vintage pieces has
always been a big part of my style.”
Don’t shy away from childhood
memories, either. You may find a
few treasures in the attic that you’ve
been storing that will make your
Christmas even more personal.
“Timeless vintage pieces such as
brass reindeers, tree toppers from our
childhood, brass candlesticks all made
their way into my Christmas décor,”
she says. “All you need is a touch of
nostalgia—less is more.”

“There is no rule when it comes to which

room the main Christmas tree should be
placed in,” says Michelle.

F
or Bruce Macaulay, proud owner
of a sprawling Andover Street
mansion, the Victorian Era has
been a nearly lifelong fascination.
“My inspiration of Victorian design started in
my early teens,” he recalls. Growing up in Melrose, which was
“loaded with Victorians,” Bruce began to develop a taste and
curiosity for the period. His interest intensified in 1976, when
his mom designed the city’s flag, winning the local competition.
“I started collecting antiques around 19,” Bruce says. “I always
thought they would be timeless quality and a great investment.”
From there, he began making larger investments, laboring to
restore antique homes to their original appearance. “Prior to
Andover Street,” he says, “I restored a similar style, but far
smaller home also in Lowell.” And after succeeding there, Bruce
graduated to an even larger treasure, a nearly 8,000 square-foot
home that originated as twin dwellings.

BACKDATING BATHROOMS
“In restoration, my philosophy is ‘take your time,’” Bruce says.
“Let the home speak to you.” In addition to patching up eleven
leaks, he also outfitted the home with modern electricity and
plumbing. This included adding bathrooms, which were brand
new innovations at the end of the Victorian Era. Naturally,
they weren’t as abundant then as they are today. “The featured
bathroom was originally a back hall to a porch that doesn’t exist
anymore,” Bruce explains. He styled the room in accordance
with the Victorian aesthetic, making it perfectly at home in his
period abode. Even though bathrooms have undergone significant
changes since then, Bruce’s seems perfectly befitting of a
Victorian gentleman.
Whenever creating from scratch, it’s a good idea to know how
you want the finished product to look. Even when designing a
historic space, the time period offers only a general guideline,
with a more specific aesthetic furnishing the greater inspiration.
“My vision was a masculine, yet over-the-top gilded masterpiece,”
Bruce says. To this end, he used décor and materials that were
consistent, both chronologically and stylistically, with what he had
in mind.

Christmas
Dinner
Known for their extravagance, Victorians typically
dined on multi-course meals and Christmas was
no exception. In fact, the after-church meal was
one of the largest of the year. Here are some of
the most important courses of the holiday.

Boisterous Beverages
They drank holiday-worthy alcohol, from eggnog to
rum, with their celebratory fare.

Soup’s On!
Victorians enjoyed meat in their soup, which often
included oyster and turtle, at Christmastime.

Birds of a Feather
When it came to choosing the main course, wealthier
Victorians indulged in turkey, while poorer families
invested in geese. Alternatively, the Northern English
partook of roast beef.

Pudding and Pies

Pudding was a very important part of the Christmas
meal, and families enjoyed a variety of fruit flavors.
They also feasted on sundry pies, including mincemeat,
a savory variety.

Gold beads and silverware bring a regal flare to Bruce’s

table, which also boasts a perfectly-period pineapple
centerpiece.

Gilded Age

CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS IN STYLE BY IMITATING THE
OPULENCE OF THE VICTORIAN ERA.
Written, styled and photographed by LIDY BAARS

E
nchanted by the magic and beauty of
Christmas, the wealthy society matrons of the Gilded Age in the
late 1800s hosted parties and dinners that were opulent, grand affairs.
Sticklers for details, with the wealth to set lavish tables filled with
gleaming gold and silver, the Astors, the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts
and their social equals were unrivaled in their soiree extravagance.

CREATE MAGIC
A holiday ball or dinner for 1,000 guests could carry a price tag of millions; these
events were lavish and decadent, with a footman for every two guests, a menu that
would rival any five-star French chef ’s creation and a small orchestra. Each guest
was welcomed to a place setting laid with magnificent dishes and glassware, not only
costly and beautiful, but perfectly laid out, with the aid of a ruler to make sure that
each setting mirrored the next one precisely.
“Christmas is the time to use the most beautiful things you own. Antique linens,
dishes, serving pieces and silverware make a delicious holiday meal look even more
tempting, and an inviting table tells your guests how happy you are that they are part
of your celebration,” Lidy Baars, owner of FrenchGardenHouse Antiques, says.

A grand affair TIPS TO HOST YOUR OWN SUMPTUOUS EVENT.

Make your own formal invitation. Set the tone of your Christmas luncheon or dinner
by making your own Victorian-inspired invitation. Replicate a favorite antique image
from a Victorian holiday card, or download an image from your computer to print
out on your laser printer. For the invitation shown on page 26, I used our
company monogram. To add a luxurious detail, punch holes in the top
of the invitation and then tie a ribbon through the holes. Though
created with modern techniques, your thoughtful invitations are
sure to be admired and will delight your guests.

Set an exceptional table. This is the time to bring out

your most resplendent pieces. Like an illustration of
a long-ago Christmas, a fine cutwork tablecloth
provides the perfect backdrop for antique
tableware. The luxurious Minton and Limoges
plates blossom with delicate roses, while
the mother-of-pearl silverware adds a soft
vintage glow. Handmade antique lace
and linen napkins, gilded mouth-blown
glasses and sterling silver serving pieces
all add Victorian flair to this setting.
Not everything needs to match: the
very fact that your table setting
pieces complement one another will
create excitement on your table.

Elevate everyday items to

centerpiece status. Fabulous
holiday flower and fruit
arrangements were a Gilded
Age tradition, especially at
Christmastime. Today, everyday
items such as a cut glass carafe or
a sterling bonbon dish can be the
star of your table. Transform them
by adding fresh holiday greens,
a sprinkling of bright, shiny tree
ornaments and a few flowers. Don’t
be afraid to mix silver with gold—all
metals mix beautifully and sparkle with
holiday glamour.

Favor your guests. In the delightful spirit of

giving, collect unusual favors for each guest
to take home when the event ends. Your gift can
be as simple as a bit of Victorian ephemera or as

lavish as a sterling necessaire case placed at each place setting. For
years to come, your gift will remind guests of the memorable time
you spent together.

Sweet Endings. Offer a variety of home-baked cakes,

along with a deliciously simple mixed-berry compote
from your sideboard or hutch. Dried apricots are
easy to present when using an antique silver and
crystal server; the mixed berries glisten in the
Victorian silver compote, ready to be spooned
onto each plate. A beautiful presentation is
as easy as displaying the cakes on pedestals
or Victorian silver trays. Simply tie a satin
ribbon around a few for holiday dress!

A Parting Gift. Give each guest a

cherished, edible gift of homemade
cake or cookies when departing.
Beautifully packaged, small fruit tarts
will nestle temptingly inside a paper
glittered basket, tied with a
shimmering bow and surrounded by
fresh greens. No time for baking?
Store-bought cookies or meringues
are just as thoughtful when
presented in a lovely way. Embrace
Christmas and all its splendor with
open arms. Whether you celebrate
the season in a glorious Victorian
mansion or a cozy cottage, my wish
for you is that every moment you
anticipate, plan and celebrate with
those you love will give you joy, and
that every meal is a feast because it is
joyously shared.

Lovely dinnerware complemented by sterling

silver flatware will get your holiday event off
to a perfect start.

nglesey Abbey
is a medieval
building,
originally
founded by
King Henry I in 1135, as
The Hospital of St Mary.
It became a priory in the early 13th
century, when a group of Augustinian
monks moved in. Then in 1536, King
Henry VIII started to dissolve the
monasteries across England, Wales and
Ireland, forcing the monks out, and
giving their land and buildings to his
favored nobles. Anglesey Abbey was
given to a lawyer named John Hynde,
who removed part of the roof and used
the materials in the construction of a
mansion he was building at Madingley
Hall. Anglesey Abbey was abandoned,
and left to decay.
Fortunately it was rescued in 1596,
when the Fowkes family bought it
and turned the monks’ living quarters
into their new home. The work was
completed in 1609. Then, almost
250 years later, in 1848, Reverend
John Hailstone purchased the Abbey.
He demolished part of the building,
and created a new stable block
with brickwork salvaged from his
demolitions. He was the first person to
call it ‘Anglesey Abbey.’

COUNTRY HOME
In 1926, Lord Fairhaven purchased
the Abbey, with help from his brother.
Lord Fairhaven spent the next few years
remodelling the property, transforming
it into a luxury country home. He
reinstated the dormer windows, which
had been removed by Reverend

house his growing collection of books. He
displayed art, clocks and silverware in his
impressive new residence.
Today, the collections are still in
place, and when Anglesey Abbey opens
for Christmas, the treasures will be
accompanied by festive decorations,
including twelve Christmas trees, each
dressed to reflect a different aspect of
Anglesey Abbey’s story.

reading. A silver Christmas tree will be
displayed in the dining room, representing
Lord Fairhaven’s collection of precious
silverware. Gentlemanly pursuits, such as
shooting, racing, collecting and traveling
will be represented on the tree in the living
room.
There will be a conservation tree in the
upper gallery, representing the conservation
work that happens at Anglesey Abbey—it
may be created out of brushes, with other
conservation tools used to decorate it. A
gift tree will be displayed in the shop, a
membership tree will go up in reception
(promoting membership of the National
Trust, which owns the house today),
and a catering tree will be on shown in
the Redwoods Restaurant. Four special
Christmas trees also will be displayed in the
gardens.

traditionally
adorned their
houses with
evergreens,
such as mistletoe, holly and ivy, which
were believed to protect the household
from evil spirits, and to encourage the
return of warmer weather and spring.
However, the Victorians influenced
the way we celebrate Christmas
like no other era in history. Before
Queen Victoria came to the throne,
the concepts of Father Christmas,
Christmas cards and Christmas
crackers hadn’t been invented. Most
people worked through Christmas and
the New Year.
The industrial revolution made
people wealthier, and Charles Dickens’
A Christmas Carol, published in 1843,
inspired some wealthy Victorians to
give money or gifts to the poor.
The growing wealth of middle
class families meant they could
afford to take a few days off work on
Christmas Day and Boxing Day to
enjoy a proper family Christmas. And
the tradition of giving gifts became
increasingly popular, until eventually
everyone was giving gifts to their
family and friends!
