Preinstallation Instructions

Exporting your models

If you have existing models that were built with a previous version of the AutoMod
software, complete the following steps before installing the software:
Step 1 Export all models.
Step 2 Delete the <modelname>.dir for each model, because it is version-specific. Also
delete the .am2rc and .mviewrc files; these files may be located in each model di-
rectory, in the home directory, and/or in the lib directory of the previous installa-
tion.
Note
Important Prior to installing this release, make a backup of your models.

!

Uninstalling previous versions

If you have installed an earlier version of the AutoMod software, you should unin-
stall it before installing the new version. To uninstall a previous version of the
AutoMod software, see “Uninstalling the AutoMod software” on page 6.
If you have questions, contact customer support before continuing.

Installing the software

Export all existing models before installing.
Step 1 Log in as a user with administrative privileges.
Step 2 Insert the installation disc into the CD-ROM drive.
Step 3 Using the File Manager or Explorer, select the CD-ROM drive.
Step 4 Double-click Setupex.exe. Follow the prompts on the screen and refer to the fol-
lowing sections for guidelines regarding installation options.

Selecting a directory for installation

When selecting an installation directory, do not select a directory with a space any-
where in its path (including the directory name).

Selecting the type of installation

There are two types of installations:
VR Graphics Mode The installation installs all of the software components described in the section be-
low. For new users, this is the easiest way to install the software. However, if you
are sure which products you want to use or are concerned about disk space, you can
choose a custom installation.
Custom A custom installation allows you to select the components you want to install. Use
this option if you are sure which products you want to install or if you want to add
components to an existing installation (the existing installation must be the same
version as the components you are installing).

Selecting the products to install

If you select the VR Graphics Mode installation, all products are installed. If you
select a custom installation, you can choose to install any combination of the fol-
lowing products:
Applications The following programs are available for installation:
AutoMod - The AutoMod software is a 3-D graphical simulation package that al-
lows you to model discrete-event simulations. The educational license limits the
number of entities you can create in an AutoMod model. See the “Using the Soft-
ware” chapter of the Getting Started with AutoMod textbook for more information.
AutoStat - The AutoStat software is a statistical analysis and run management
package that helps you experiment with your model. The educational license of the
AutoStat software only runs models that are built with the educational license of
AutoMod.
Demos The demos allow you to install sample graphics and example models that accom-
pany the Getting Started with AutoMod book. The “graphics” option installs a li-
brary of sample entity graphics that you can use to replace default entity graphics
in a model. The “GSWA” option installs the example models that are used in the
Getting Started with AutoMod textbook.
System Utilities The system utilities consist of programs that are necessary for reading online doc-
umentation and running the AutoStat software on your machine.
ote
Note If you are installing for the first time, you must install the system utilities.

The system utilities consist of the following programs:
Acrobat Reader - Acrobat Reader allows you to view and print PDF files.
Acrobat Reader v 4.0 (or higher) is necessary to view the online tutorials and man-
uals that are installed with the software.
Microsoft Virtual Machine - The Microsoft Virtual Machine guarantees a level
of uniformity in the way Java applications are executed (regardless of a machine’s
software and hardware configurations). The Virtual Machine is required to run the
AutoStat software.
VR Graphics The VR graphics version of the software allows you to display several graphic for-
mats not supported in the standard version, including: VRML, Open Inventor, 3D
Studio, AutoCad DXF, and more. Installing the VR graphic components also al-
lows you to manipulate the current view using Open Inventor controls, and pro-
vides standard Windows printer support and printing options. Clearing this box
installs the standard graphics version of the software.

Selecting the Home directory

The Home directory defines the default directory for opening or saving models
from within the software. The Home directory also defines the location where con-
figuration files can be saved to affect multiple models (as opposed to defining a
separate configuration for each model).
You can select any existing directory on your machine; select the directory in
which you are most likely to store your models.
ote
Note Do not select a directory that contains a space in the directory path.

Environment variables
When prompted, select Yes to let the installation program set the system environ-
ment variables for you. Setting the environment variables assigns directories to
variables that the software uses to locate needed files.
The environment variables are set to the following:
ASI The AutoMod installation directory.
PATH Modified to include the bin directory of the installation.
HOME The home directory that you selected during installation.
MAKE_MODE A value, used by the GNU compiler, to determine the platform on which the soft-
ware is running. The value of this environment variable must be set to “WIN32.”

Setting display properties

After you have installed the software, set the following display properties in your
Control Panel:
Colors = 32K or higher
Resolution = 1024x768
Fonts = Small Fonts
Note
Important If you do not use these settings, the software’s windows and graphics might not dis-

! play properly.
If you are using the Windows 2000 operating system, complete the following ad-
ditional steps:
Step 1 In the Display Properties window, click the Effects tab.
Step 2 Clear Use transition effects for menus and tool tips.
Clearing this option prevents menu remnants that occur with some graphics cards
in the VR Graphics version of the software.

Running the software

To start the AutoMod software:
Step 1 Select AutoMod from the AutoMod 11.1 (Student Version) program group in the
Windows Start menu.
or
Double-click the “amod” icon in the bin directory of the AutoMod installation.
The Work Area window appears. You are now ready to create a model.

Uninstalling the AutoMod software

Uninstall utilities are included with the AutoMod installation. To uninstall the ed-
ucational license of the AutoMod software, select Uninstall AutoMod from the
AutoMod 11.1 (Student Version) program group in the Windows Start menu and
follow the on-screen instructions.

Troubleshooting
This section contains information about how to solve problems that you might ex-
perience during and after software installation. If the problem you are experiencing
is not listed in this section, contact customer support for further assistance.

Problems during installation

Problem: During installation, I get an error that says “cannot add \bin to
path.”
Solution: This error occurs when you are installing in a directory with an incom-
patible name. To fix the problem, reinstall into a directory that does not contain a
space in its name or in the name of any directory in its path.

Problems starting the software

Problem: When I open the software, some windows are cropped or I can’t see
some buttons in the interface.
Solution: Delete the “.am2rc” and the “.mviewrc” files from each model directory,
the home directory, and the \lib directory of the installation. Also, ensure that the
display is set to a resolution of 1024x768 or higher. Then reopen the software.
Problem: When I open the software, I can’t see the drawing grid.
Solution: Set your display colors to 32K colors or higher.
Problem: When I open the software, I get an error indicating that the ASI en-
vironment variable has not been set.
Solution: The environment variables are not set correctly on your machine. Verify
that you have administrative privileges (which are required to set the value of en-
vironment variables on your machine), then either reinstall the software and let the
installation script set the environment variable values for you or set the values man-
ually in your OS (see “Environment variables” on page 5).

Problems using the software

Problem: When manipulating the view, placing graphics, or toggling the dis-
play of graphic entities, the software sometimes fails.
Solution: This could indicate that the software is incompatible with your graphics
card’s hardware acceleration. To fix the problem, try lowering the hardware accel-
eration setting defined on the Troubleshooting tab of the Display control panel in
Windows. Often, slight reductions of the hardware acceleration will solve the prob-
lem, however you might need to reduce the acceleration significantly or turn it off
completely.
Problem: When I try to run a model in the AutoStat software, the “Select a
model to run” window opens before each run.
Solution: This error occurs when a model is stored in a location that includes a
space anywhere in its path. To fix the problem, move the model to a directory that
does not contain a space in its name or in the name of any directory in its path.
Problem: When I try to run a model, I repeatedly get the error “Can’t run
model. Would you like to build model?”
Solution: This error occurs when you are installing in a directory with an incom-
patible name. To fix the problem, reinstall into a directory that does not contain a
space in its name or in the name of any directory in its path.
Problem: When I run a model, the model graphics don’t appear in the Simu-
lation window.
Solution: This error could indicate that the software is incompatible with your
graphics card’s hardware acceleration. To fix the problem, try lowering the hard-
ware acceleration setting defined on the Troubleshooting tab of the Display control
panel in Windows. Often, slight reductions of the hardware acceleration will solve
the problem, however you might need to reduce the acceleration significantly or
turn it off completely.
Problem: When I close a menu, some remnants of the menu remain visible on
the screen.
Solution:
Step 1 In Windows, open the Display Properties window, then click the Effects tab.
Step 2 Clear Use transition effects for menus and tool tips.
Clearing this option prevents menu remnants that occur with some graphics cards
in the VR Graphics version of the software.
