1 Two identical parallel plates (air) capacitors C1 and C2 have capacitances C each. The space 2
between their plates is now filled with dielectrics as shown. If the two capacitors still have equal
capacitance, obtain the relation between dielectric constants K, K1 and K2.

2 Three concentric metallic shells A, B and C of radii a, b and c (a < b < c) have surface charge 2
densities + σ, – σ and + σ respectively as shown in the figure.
If shells A and C are at the same potential, then obtain the relation between the radii a, b, c.

3. (a) Compare the individual dipole moment and the specimen dipole moment for H2O molecule 3
and O2 molecule when placed in
(i) absence of external electric field
(ii) presence of external electric field.
Justify your answer.
(b) Given two parallel conducting plates of area A and charge densities +σ and –σ. A dielectric slab
of constant K and a conducting slab of thickness d each are inserted in between them as shown.
(i) Find the potential difference between the plates.
(ii) Plot E versus x graph, taking x = 0 at positive plate and x = 5d at negative plate.
4. (a) A parallel plate capacitor is charged by a battery to a potential. The battery is disconnected 3
and a dielectric slab is inserted to completely fill the space between the plates. How will (i) its
capacitance, (ii) electric field between the plates, and (iii) energy stored in the capacitor be
affected?
Justify your answer giving necessary mathematical expressions for each case.
(b) Sketch the pattern of electric field lines due to (i) a conducting sphere having negative charge in
it, (ii) an electric dipole.

5. Two point charges +10 μC and – 10 μC are separated by a distance of 40 cm in air. Calculate 2
the electrostatic potential energy of the system, assuming the zero of the potential energy to be at
infinity.

Calculate the potential at the centre of a square of side m, which carries at its four corners
charges of + 2 nC, + 1 nC, –2 nC and –3 nC respectively.

7. In a uniform electrostatic field of strength 5 × 105 N/C, what will be the potential difference 1
between the points A and C as shown? It is given that AC = 5 cm and BC = 3 cm.

8. A parallel plate capacitor is to be designed to have a capacitance of 50 pF and a voltage rating 2


of 1000 V. What minimum area of the plates is required if the space between the plates is to be
completely filled with a dielectric of dielectric constant 4 and electric strength 106 V m–1?

9. Four capacitors are connected as shown in the figure. Calculate the equivalent capacitance 2
between the points X and Y.

10. In the arrangement of capacitors shown here, the energy stored in the 6 μF capacitor is E. Find 3
the following:
(a) Energy stored in the 12 μF capacitor.
(b) Energy stored in the 3 μF capacitor.
(c) Total energy drawn from the battery.

11. Two identical charged particles having charge of 2 × 10–4 C and mass 10 g are kept at a 2
separation of 10 cm and released. What would be the speed of the particles when the separation
between them is very large?

12. For what value of C does the equivalent capacitance between A and B is 1μF in the given circuit. 3
