The essays in this volume attempt to re-evaluate,
understand and explain various aspects of Jewish
history within the broader historical context of
the post-Roman Barbarian world. They address
a wide variety of topics, sources, and geographies,
and together they provide a nuanced and more
balanced history of the Jews in the early medieval
West. Although written independently of one
another by some of the most prominent historians
of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, the
various essays collected here reveal a remarkable
tension between the ‘imaginary’ (or ‘hermeneutical’)
Jew and the ‘real’ one. As this volume demonstrates,
Augustine’s positive theological understanding of
Jews and Judaism was often overshadowed by anti-
Jewish sentiments, and consequently anti-Jewish
invective remained the drive wheel of Christian
theology, especially in the context of debates and
polemics among the Christians themselves.
Yitzhak Hen is Professor of Late Antique and Early
Medieval History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem,
and Director of the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies
(IIAS). Thomas F.X. Noble is Andrew V.Tackes Professor
Emeritus at the University of Notre Dame.

discovered in Tura in the early 1940s.
This volume contains a completed edition of
Didymus the Blind’s commentary on Psalms
26:10–29:2 and Psalms 36:1–3 that was
discovered in Tura in the early 1940s. In 1984/85
Brigham Young University acquired five folia
comprising quinion eight (Pss. 26:10–29:2) and
the first bifolium of quire sixteen (Ps. 36:1–3) of
Didymus’ psalm commentary; in total this material
consists of twenty-two complete pages of Greek
text. This volume contains an introduction
to these papyri, a transcription (articulated,
diplomatic and prosodic), an English translation,
as well as notes and commentary, indices and
plates. As these papyri have never been published
and are the last known portion of Didymus’
commentary on Psalms, they are very important
and sure to be of interest to both papyrologists
and scholars of early Christianity.
Lincoln H. Blumell is currently an Associate
Professor in the Department of Ancient Scripture at
Brigham Young University. He completed his Ph.D.
at the University of Toronto in the Department for
the Study of Religion in 2009. He also holds a M.St.
from the University of Oxford (Christ Church) and an
M.A. and BA (Hons.) from the University of Calgary.
His research focus is Christianity in the Roman
and Byzantine periods with a special emphasis
on Christianity in Egypt and Greek and Coptic
papyrology and epigraphy.

Le Catalogue, le second de la série consacrée
aux manuscrits grecs conservés au Patriarcat
œcuménique à Istanbul, décrit les manuscrits
provenant du monastère de la Sainte-Trinité situé sur
l’île de Chalki. Le premier volume contient, après une
brève introduction, la description des 147 manuscrits
qui constituent ce fonds et se termine par les index
d’usage, très détaillés ; le second volume est réservé
aux illustrations, soit 359 planches photographiques,
pour la plupart en couleur : 307 planches pour
les écritures et les décors, 43 planches pour les
reliures, et 9 planches pour les petits fers de reliure.
Répondant aux normes scientifiques modernes,
il remplace le catalogue antérieur d’Aemilianos
Tsakopoulos (1956).
Le fonds de la Sainte-Trinité est principalement
constitué des manuscrits rassemblés à l’époque de
la refondation du monastère de la Sainte-Trinité par
le futur patriarche Métrophane III (1565-1572, 1578-
1580) au milieu du 16e siècle et dans les décennies qui
suivirent. La physionomie d’ensemble de la collection
est donc étroitement liée à cette double origine.
D’une part il s’agit d’une bibliothèque monastique,
et les manuscrits ont principalement un contenu
liturgique et religieux, même si la littérature classique
n’en est pas absente. D’autre part, elle a été fondée
par un futur patriarche, bibliophile de surcroît, qui a
continué à la protéger et l’enrichir une fois devenu
patriarche ; de ce fait, la presque totalité de manuscrits
est antérieure au 16e siècle, et on y trouve un nombre
important de manuscrits anciens de belle facture,
mais aussi des manuscrits contenant des textes rares
ainsi que plusieurs palimpsestes. Les abondantes
annotations qu’ils portent en font une source de
premier ordre pour écrire l’histoire du monastère de
la Sainte-Trinité, qui fera l’objet d’un volume séparé
dans la même série, et plus largement du Patriarcat et
des institutions monastiques de Constantinople et de
sa région sous l’Empire ottoman.
Réalisé sous l’égide de Sa Sainteté Bartholomée,
dans le cadre d’un programme plus large sur
l’histoire des bibliothèques grecques dans l’Empire
ottoman financé par l’Agence nationale de la
recherche, ce catalogue est l’œuvre de quatre
chercheurs de l’Institut de Recherche et d’Histoire
des Textes (CNRS), André Binggeli, Matthieu Cassin,
Marie Cronier, et Matoula Kouroupou.

sanctuary in the Italian Alps west of Milan, designed
as a schematic replica of Jerusalem, to enable the
faithful to make a virtual pilgrimage to the Holy City
if they could not undertake the perilous journey to
visit it physically. Long dismissed as folk art unworthy
of serious critical attention, the Sacri Monti are
now recognised as monuments of unique artistic
significance. This book studies their development
as the products of the religious sensibilities and
the social, economic, and political conditions of the
mountain communities that created them.

by professor emeritus Bruno Toscano and
professor Timothy Wilson of the Ashmolean
Museum in Oxford. The interventions of the
numerous experts divided according to the three
sessions of the conference deal with a re-reading
of collections, collectors and museums, discuss
new emergencies, studies and research from the
territories and explore ceramic production before
and after the Renaissance.

After the Fall of Antwerp in 1585, Amsterdam
took over its position as the main trade hub in
northwestern Europe. The city grew rapidly to
become the central harbour town – and one of
the largest European cities. The boom in harbours
and industry went hand in hand with an explosive
population growth. This resulted in two huge
city extensions in 1613 and 1663, multiplying
the territory of Amsterdam by five. Around the
old town, the now famous ring of canals was
constructed. Beyond this residential zone, mixed-
use and industrial districts were laid out, with a
series of harbour islands along the borders of the IJ.
Early modern Amsterdam was an ultra-modern
city, laid out conforming to the triple demand of
functionality, beauty and profit; a city that takes a
unique place in European urban history because
of its location, design, and impressive scale. This
book deals with the question how Amsterdam’s
administration managed to realize these immense
projects from the viewpoints of urban design,
infrastructure, logistics, and finance.
The first part of this book is dedicated to the
extension projects. A thorough analysis of all
remaining administrative archives and a great many
cartographic documents has enabled the author
to reconstruct the decision process about the
scale, design, and realization of the extensions. The
second part contains chapters concerning land use,
public space and water management. Metropolis in
the Making tells the story of one of the cradles
of early modern capitalism and at the same time
one of the most meticulously planned cities in the
world. Its broad approach of planning makes this a
standard work on early modern urbanism.
Jaap Evert Abrahamse studied History of
Architecture at Groningen University and has a PhD
from Amsterdam University on the development and
planning of Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age.
He has worked in the Planning Department of the
City of Amsterdam and at Utrecht University, and
since 2007 has been a senior researcher of urban
history in the Landscape Department of the Cultural
Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.

The Grand Tour of Cosimo di Ferdinando de’ Medici,
prince of Tuscany, between 1668 and 1669, included
many of the great states of Europe - Spain, Portugal,
England, Holland and France - in a carefully prepared
itinerary chosen to help educate and prepare the
26-year old prince to one day become Grand Duke
of Tuscany. In March 1669, he reached Santiago de
Compostela, arguably the highlight of the trip, where
he made a pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James the
Apostle in the city’s cathedral.
The travel diaries of five members of his retinue
describe the visit in great detail, providing a rare
account of the city and the pilgrim’s rites and rituals.
Another member of the prince’s entourage, the
Florentine artist, Pier Maria Baldi, painted a large-
scale panorama of Compostela, the most valuable
cityscape from the 1600s known to date. Using
hitherto unknown source material, this volume
charts a journey to one of the most important
pilgrimage sites in the world, then held as an equal
to Rome and Jerusalem, that stimulated the piety of
the man who would become Cosimo III de’ Medici,
Grand Duke of Tuscany.
Miguel Taín Guzmán received his prize-winning
doctorate in art history from the Universidad de
Santiago de Compostela in 1997, where, since 2001,
he has taught art history as Associate Professor. Dr. Taín
Guzmán has held fellowships at the Kunsthistorisches
Institut in Florence, at Harvard’s Villa I Tatti, and at the
Brandenburg Research Academy. His current research
focus is the art and architecture of travel and pilgrimage
in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Spain.

Cut in Alabaster is the first comprehensive study
of alabaster sculpture in Western Europe during
the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.
While marble is associated with Renaissance Italy,
alabaster was the material commonly used elsewhere
in Europe and has its own properties, traditions and
meanings. It enjoyed particular popularity as a sculptural
material during the two centuries 1330-1530, when
alabaster sculpture was produced both for indigenous
consumption and for export. Focussing especially
on England, the Burgundian Netherlands and Spain,
three territories closely linked through trade routes,
diplomacy and cultural exchange, this book explores
and compares the material practice and visual culture

Count Carlo Cesare Malvasia’s Felsina pittrice
(1678), or Lives of the Bolognese Painters, is one of
the most important sources for the history and
criticism of painting in Italy. In this new critical
edition careful analysis of all materials will make
it possible to reevaluate Malvasia’s status as a
historian, and provide new information about
the construction of the Felsina pittrice as a book.
Described by Malvasia as the creator and promoter
of the new “maniera moderna,” Guido introduces the
fourth age of painting: a period marked by a new and
sometimes bold elaboration on the notion of artistic
perfection developed by the Carracci and achieved
more specifically by Ludovico. Art in Italy could have
declined again after the deaths of the Carracci, but
thanks to Guido and Domenichino, Francesco Albani
and Guercino, a renewed flowering of the art of
painting prevails in Bologna and spreads throughout
Italy. In assessing the role of Guido in promoting
this new artistic vanguard, Malvasia finds himself in
a theoretical impasse. On the one hand, he cannot
resist his infatuation with Guido’s work; endowed
with spellbinding powers, Guido’s paintings embody
the greatest luxury of modernity: an endless search
for aesthetic refinement and transcendental beauty
both in the representation of the human body and in
the orchestration of light, color, and impasto. On the
other hand, Malvasia cannot bring himself to embrace
Guido’s “last manner,” where delicacy verges on
feebleness, transcendence coalesces into purposeless
abstraction, divine vision engenders incompleteness,
and sprezzatura turns into apparent carelessness. In
Malvasia’s eyes, Guido is both a model of virtue and
the victim of the demonic force of gambling. With
acuity, Malvasia praises Guido the money-maker, the
self-confident artist able to overhaul the rules of
the art market by increasing the value of painting;
but he detests Guido the money-squanderer, the
indebted artist who gambles away his reputation
and, supposedly, the quality of his creations. Richly
illustrated, this volume provides a translation and
critical edition of the life of Guido, offering copious
historical notes filled with documentary information
about Guido’s biography and the works by Guido
mentioned by Malvasia. It constitutes the most
thorough treatment of the artist’s work in print.

The dal Pozzo print collection was unique in its scope
and organisation. Some 3,000 prints are known,
in fourteen albums and many loose impressions
mainly divided between the British Library and the
Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Acquired from the
flourishing printmaking industry of the time, the
prints assembled by Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588–1657)
and his younger brother Carlo Antonio (1606–89)
were largely documentary and carefully ordered by
subject matter: costumes, religious processions and
ceremonies, tombs and catafalques, portraits, social
and humorous subjects, architecture, topography,
maps and military engagements.
This second and final part of the catalogue presents
the architectural, topographical and military prints.
Over 750 prints are devoted to ancient and modern
Rome: from an album entirely dedicated to St Peter’s
– the largest building project of the day – to another
covering the major pilgrim and other churches in
Rome, including exterior views, plans, altarpieces
and statuary. The palaces and villas of Rome are also
well represented, including Falda’s famous Palazzi
di Roma, while the ancient city is evoked through
two compilations of sixteenth-century prints:
Hieronymous Cock’s Roman ruins and the Speculum
Romanae Magnificentiae with many reconstructions
of ancient buildings. The collection stretched well
beyond Rome however, and included architecture in
other Italian and European cities (including Rubens’s
Palazzi di Genova and Perret’s engravings of the
Escorial).The European theatre of war is represented
in over 600 prints recording major sixteenth- and
seventeenth-century military engagements: an
extraordinary assemblage that testifies to the
popularity of this genre of printmaking that not
only celebrated victory but provided information
to convey news of military events. This ground-
breaking catalogue will be an essential resource not
only for students of prints, but for all those studying
European visual culture in the seventeenth century.

The book explores the artists’ skeptical reflection
on the problematic relationship of painting and
sculpture to the art of truth.
According to an old historiographic tradition, the
Spanish Golden Age placed the imitation of nature at
the service of religion: its radical naturalism responded
to the deep faith of that culture and moment. Crime &
Illusion argues the opposite. It defends the thesis that
the fundamental problem artists of the Golden Age
confronted was not imitation but Truth. Moreover, a
large part, maybe the best part, of Spanish Baroque
religious imagery is better understood as a complex
exercise in addressing the spectators’ doubts. Hovering
on the horizon of an emerging empiricism, artists
created their images as pieces of evidence, arguments
for belief. Crime & Illusion reconstructs and interprets
this judicial or forensic aspect of early modern visual
culture at the center of a political, religious, and
scientific triangle. Finally, the book explores the artists’
skeptical reflection on the problematic relationship of
painting and sculpture to the art of truth.
Felipe Pereda is the Fernando Zóbel de Ayala Professor
of Spanish Art at Harvard University. Born in Madrid,
he studied at the Universidad Complutense, and the
Autónoma University where he received his PhD (1995)
and taught until 2011. In more recent years, he has
also taught at the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas
(Universidad Autónoma de México), and Johns Hopkins
University (2011-15). He has worked on Spanish late
medieval and early modern art, art theory, image theory
and history of architecture.

Felipe Pereda reconstructs the history of religious
art in Spain between two crucial dates in the “politics
of the image” enforced by the “Reyes Católicos”:
1478 and 1501. By focusing first on Seville, then
on Granada Pereda evokes the first moments of
the institution of the “Santo Oficio” and its later
developments. In both cities, the local authorities
had established the obligation for citizens to keep
religious images within their houses. In Seville, the
authorities in particular targeted the “marranos”
(Jewish converts); in Granada, the new “moriscos”
(converted Muslims). In both cases, the edicts
emanated from the confessor of Queen Isabella
of Castile, Fray Hernando de Talavera, himself of
“converso” origin. At the intersection of social
history and intellectual history, Images of Discord
shows in which ways religious and social conflicts
determined the status and development of sacred
art in late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century
Castile and Andalusia and, more broadly, the history

Parler de Dieu suppose de lui attribuer des qualités
qui montrent combien sa nature est différente
de celle de l’homme. De sa perfection découlent
notamment l’impassibilité et l’immutabilité. Dès
lors, comment parler d’émotions de Dieu, puisque
les mouvements et changements, le dérèglement
et l’altération qu’elles présument renvoient, dès
l’Antiquité, à la faiblesse et à la passivité humaines ?
Ces émotions divines traversent pourtant bien
l’Ancien Testament, qui présente un Dieu tour à tour
affligé, offensé, en colère, aimant et prenant pitié de
ses créatures. Ces anthropomorphismes doivent-ils
être lus de manière allégorique, comme la preuve
d’une inadéquation sémantique et d’une intention
pédagogique ? Est-ce parce que ce sujet résiste que
le vaste courant d’histoire des émotions l’a délaissé ?
La « théologie de la souffrance de Dieu » est
même devenue particulièrement importante au
XXe siècle, mais si elle s’est singulièrement nourrie
des corpus biblique, patristique et médiévaux, les
emplois de l’époque moderne sont restés oubliés.
Notre volume se situe à l’intersection de ce double
angle mort thématique de l’histoire des émotions,
et chronologique de l’histoire de la théologie. Il
propose d’élargir l’enquête aux gestes sociaux dans
lesquels les émotions de Dieu sont impliquées. À la
question en quel sens peut-on parler des émotions
de Dieu, il est nécessaire d’ajouter celles-ci : Que
fait-on des émotions que l’on prête à Dieu ? Par
qui et dans quels cadres sont-elles mobilisées, à
quelles intentions ? Les embarras sémantiques,
stylistiques, narratifs, ontologiques, exégétiques et
confessionnels auxquels donnent lieu ces émotions
divines se déploient ici dans des cadres théologiques,
homilétiques, littéraires, mais aussi, plus largement,
oratoires, théâtraux et guerriers.
Chrystel Bernat est maître de conférences en
histoire du christianisme moderne (LEM, CNRS-EPHE).
Elle travaille sur l’histoire intellectuelle de l’épreuve,
les pratiques de piété militantes et l’homilétique
protestante francophone (histoire de la pensée et des
discours de combat, formes de l’engagement religieux

Poetry in Motion traces the fascinating travels of
medieval courtly song around most of western
Europe, and tells the story of what poetry,
poets, and their scribes had to say about
vernacular languages.
The medieval courtly lyric, the site for the first
extended literary exercises in Occitan, French, Italian
and German, is one of the foundations of how we
think about European literature. Since the nineteenth
century it has in many accounts underpinned a system
of linguistically-informed national traditions. David
Murray shows in ‘Poetry in Motion’ how categorizing
poetry under headings like ‘French’ or ‘Italian’ poetry
can obscure the thinking of medieval poets and
scribes about what constituted a language. Rather
than existing within a series of rigidly distinct linguistic
systems, Murray demonstrates that song moved in a
fluid environment where linguistic boundaries could
be easily crossed. Aided by its melody, metrical form or
quotation in a larger text, a song could travel and elicit
meaningful reactions and interactions far from ‘home’.
Combining literary studies with philology, manuscript
studies and musicology, ‘Poetry in Motion’ shows the
truly European reach of song in the Middle Ages.
After undergraduate and graduate studies in Cambridge,
David Murray completed his PhD in Medieval European
Literature at King’s College London in 2015. After teaching
in Paris, he is now part of the ERC-funded project ‘Music
and Late Medieval European Court Cultures’ based at the
University of Oxford. He is currently writing a monograph
about the musical culture of the court of Pilgrim von
Puecheim, Archbishop of Salzburg, 1365-1396.

The history of program music stretches back
centuries, but only in the nineteenth century
did it enter into widespread use. Indeed, seminal
compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven and
Frédéric Chopin to Arnold Schoenberg and
Jean Sibelius have helped program music to
secure a position within the artistic pantheon,
albeit not without bringing a significant amount
of controversy in tow. Yet despite its ubiquitous
presence in the nineteenth century, scholarship
has not adequately articulated the full extent of
program music’s range and impact. This volume
explores the diverse ways in which program music
was defined, historicized, practiced, disseminated,
and judged. It considers how biography, tradition,
and function informed the compositional
approaches taken by Beethoven, Joseph Joachim,
Ethel Smyth, and Zygmunt Noskowski, among
others. It draws on extra-musical elements –
novels, poems, lithographs, and other forms
of creative expression – to determine the
ontological profile of works by Chopin, Franz
Liszt, Antonio Pasculli, Piotr Tchaikovsky, and Leoš
Janáček. It situates compositions by Johannes
Brahms, Gustav Mahler, Sibelius, and Schoenberg
within the ongoing discourse around Hanslickian
absolute and Lisztian program music. And it
visits major European cities to highlight the
critical streams of reception toward the end of
the century. Throughout, it repeatedly engages
with questions of generic identity (with special
attention given to the symphonic poem), issues
of narrativity and topicality, and considerations of
form and structure.
Jonathan Kregor is Professor of Musicology at
the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory
of Music. His research interests include aesthetics,
Franz Liszt, musical reproduction, music and memory,
virtuosity and gender, and art song. He is the author
of “Liszt as Transcriber” (2010); “Program Music”
(2015); editor of works by CPE Bach and Clara
Schumann; and co-editor of “Liszt et la France”
(2012). Since 2012 he has been editor of the “Journal
of the American Liszt Society”.

Ptolemy’s Astronomy: The
Almagesti minor (c. 1200)

The Almagesti minor is one of the most important
works of medieval astronomy. The Almagesti minor,
probably written in northern France circa 1200, is
a Latin summary of the first six books of Ptolemy’s
astronomical masterpiece, the Almagest. Also
known to modern scholars as the “Almagestum
parvum”, the Almagesti minor provides a clear
example of how a medieval scholar understood
Ptolemy’s authoritative writing on cosmology,
spherical astronomy, solar theory, lunar theory, and
eclipses. The author incorporated the findings of
astronomers of the Islamic world, such as al-Battānī,
into the framework of Ptolemaic astronomy,
and he altered the format and style of Ptolemy’s
astronomy in order to make it accord with the
author’s ideals of a mathematical science, which
were primarily derived from Euclid’s Elements.
The Almagesti minor had a profound effect upon
astronomical writing throughout the 13th-15th
centuries, including the work of Georg Peurbach
and Johannes Regiomontanus. In this first volume
of the Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus series, Henry
Zepeda offers not only a critical edition of this
little-studied text, but also a translation of it into
English, analysis of both the text and its geometrical
figures, and a thorough study of the work’s origins,
sources, and long-lasting influence.
Henry Zepeda is a historian of science. He is a Teaching
Fellow at Wyoming Catholic College, and he previously
worked in the Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus project at
the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities. His
research is focused upon medieval mathematics and
astronomy of the 12th to 15th centuries.
