Topic: Earth Day

Aids: OHP, handouts(picture cards, the song ’What a wonderful world’- Louis

Armstrong-optional, Planet Earth-our lifelong friend worksheet), CD player, CD

Lesson aims: - to encourage the students to speak about the environment;

- to give students practice in speaking for fluency;

- to develop an appreciation that environmental issues are global,

affecting each of us and to show appreciation for our environment;

- to raise awareness of the many ways people can help our planet and

to protect the environment;

- to encourage students to take action in response to environmental

degradation.

Warm-up

Aim: to get students’ attention

Procedure: The T greets the Ss and asks them different questions such as: “How are you

today?” and then checks the homework.

Lead In

Aim: to get the Ss ready for the lesson


Procedure: The T announces the topic of the lesson.

Activity 1-pre-listening

Aim: The Ss try to predict the message of the song ’What a wonderful world’- Louis

Armstrong from the title and study the picture cards given

Interaction: whole class

Aids: picture cards

Procedure: The T wants to introduce the topic of World-The Earth through music. The T

prepares the Ss for the listening activity, explains that they are going to listen to a song

and they are supposed to get the message of the song and put the cards in the order in

which they hear them in the song. The T also asks the Ss to jot down a few ideas about the

world in the song.

Activity 2-while listening

Aim: The Ss listen to the song ’What a wonderful world’- Louis Armstrong

Interaction: individual work

Aids: notebook, picture cards, CD, CD player

Procedure: T plays the CD player and asks Ss to pay attention to the recording

Time: 7 mins

Activity 3-post-listening:

Aim: The Ss discuss about the message of the song and order the picture cards. The Ss

share their opinions and feelings towards the world in the song.

Procedure: The T listens to the answers the Ss give and correct the exercise related to the

picture cards

Activity 4

Aim: The Ss have to complete the worksheet entitled “Planet Earth-our lifelong friend” on

things they love about nature, favourite place in nature, the environmental problems Earth

faces and “green” things they can do to help Earth. The Ss discuss about what it means to

be a R.R.R.ole Model(Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle)

Interaction: pair work

Procedure: The T hands out one worksheet for each two students. The Ss note down a

few issues on the Planet Earth, the environment they live in and on what it means to be

eco-friendly, what it takes someone to be environmentally friendly

Activity 5-while watching

Interaction: whole class activity

Aids: printed speech, OHP

Procedure: The T plays the OHP and asks the Ss to pay attention to the video

Activity 6
Aim: The Ss write a magazine article about Earth Day. They write about what

happens around the world.

Interaction: individual work

Aids: pens, notebooks

Procedure: The T asks the Ss to write a magazine article

Skills: writing, reading

Evaluation

The T evaluates the Ss’ answers and draws conclusions;

The Ss listen to the T and ask questions if any.

Homework

The T asks the Ss to make group posters about Earth Day
