Please note:
1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiner’s
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component –
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

Preamble
This course imparts the skills for analytical design and analysis of continuous time control systems. The
students will be trained on necessary mathematical tools for control system analysis and design in time
and frequency domain. Students will be taught about mathematical modelling of linear systems, design
and analysis of systems for given specifications and tune the controller for stable system operation.
Students will be trained on the modeling and simulation of linear systems and design and analysis of
controllers using MATLAB.

Part -A (05 Marks)

A mathematical model is the representation of a system based on physical laws. The model is analyzed
for various inputs. The corresponding differential equations can be solved either analytically or using
any simulation tool to determine time – response characteristics and stability.

In this context debate on the statement: “High end simulation tools are sufficient for analysis of control
systems.”
Your debate should address the following:
A1.1 Comparison of analytical methods and simulation tools for analysis of control systems
A.1.2 Steps involved in modelling and analysis of a control system using both the methods
A.1.3 Justification of stance taken with conclusion

Part B (20 Marks)

B .1 (10 Marks)
A pressure regulator is a control valve that reduces the input pressure of a fluid to a desired value at
its output. The desired pressure is set by turning a calibrated screw. This compresses the spring and
sets up a force that opposes the upward motion of the diaphragm. The bottom side of the diaphragm
is exposed to the water pressure that is to be controlled. Thus the motion of the diaphragm is an
indication of the pressure difference between the desired and the actual pressures. It acts like a
comparator. The valve is connected to the diaphragm and moves according to the pressure difference
until it reaches a position in which the difference is zero.

Figure 1
B 1.1 Develop a mathematical model of the pressure regulator.
B 1.2 Obtain block diagram for the pressure regulator.
B 1.3 Simulate and analyze the working principle of the pressure regulator using a standard
simulation tool.

3
Note: Contact course leader for the values of diaphragm area ‘A’, spring constant ‘k’, screw
displacement ‘x’, input and output pressure ‘y’.

B .2 (3+3+4=10 Marks)
Centrifugal governor or fly ball governor was developed in 1769 by James Watt. The shaft of a steam
engine is connected to a flyball mechanism and in turn connected to the throttle of the steam engine,
as illustrated in Figure 2. The system is designed so that as the speed of the engine increases the
flyballs spread apart due to centrifugal force and a linkage causes the throttle on the steam engine to
be closed. This in turn slows down the engine, which causes the flyballs to come back together. The
flyball governor maintains a constant speed of the engine, independent of the loading conditions.
The engine transfer function is given by:
𝜔(𝑠) 1
𝐺(𝑠) = = 2
𝑣(𝑠) 𝐽𝑠 + 𝑓𝑠 + 𝑐
Where, 𝜔(𝑠) = angular velocity of the shaft, 𝑣(𝑠) = fuel input, 𝐽 = inertia of the engine, 𝑓 = friction
constant, 𝑐 = stiffness constant

Figure 2
B 2.1 Develop a block diagram for the flyball governor.
B 2.2 Simulate and analyze the working principle of the flyball governor using a standard simulation
tool.
B 2.3 Compare flyball governor with latest speed governing mechanisms with respect to control
aspect.
Note: Contact course leader for values of 𝜔(𝑠), 𝐽, 𝑓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑐.
