II. Reaction
Syngas Generator needs fuel to operate. In Vsu they use rice hull as a fuel to this kind
of generator. To operate, first open the gasification chamber and put the rice hull or the
fuel inside then light it and let the fuel burn. After burning, pyrolysis takes part, which
yields a main product which is syngas and byproducts, which are tar and charcoal. In this
process air or gasses moves upward and the ash goes downward. After the pyrolysis,
syngas flows and collected in the syngas tank or chamber by passing the metal pipe. To
use the syngas, the lever should be opened in order for the syngas to flow to the stove.
During gasification, the fuel specifically the rice hull, is loaded and heated in a
chamber to a high temperature. As a product of pyrolysis, charcoal, tar and syngas are the
products. The syngas are then collected to the syngas tank or chamber, while the tar is
collected through a container below the syngas tank or chamber.
The invention of syngas generator gives the future engineer prior knowledge about
the potential contributions of it. It can be that the engineers in the future will have an idea
that will make them innovate and introduce this alternative fuel source that is generated
from wastes. By this, the society will be introduced to the idea of syngas and will resort
to the use of it resulting to more productive and more eco-friendly fuel resource
production.
III. Life Long Learnings
Through this exercise, students were able to observe the actual process in operating
the syngas generator and appreciate how helpful it is. One of the syngas’ role is to
minimize these phenomena that occurs in this world. It is very functional when it comes
to reducing the amount of greenhouse gases and other harmful chemicals from the
