School Parking Problems

Debate about cars parking at the School at drop off and pick up time continues to rumble on and at the heart of the
discussion is keeping school children safe.
With nearly half the children attending the school coming from outside the village there will always be a substantial number
of cars parking around the school. The issue is more how they park, rather than where they park away from the school.
The recently installed double yellow lines were not put in place to solve the problem but to ensure that when all the
children spill out of the school gate, junctions are kept clear and vehicles passing the school have a clearer line of sight
through that area of any child potentially running out into the road. In the main, most parents/guardians appreciate this
and park appropriately, but unfortunately, a regular but small minority feel the yellow lines don’t apply to them and they are
the ones putting children at risk. Now Flintshire County Council have re painted the zig zag lines and closed the gap with
the double yellow lines, traffic wardens will be able visit the area on a regular basis and ensure the parking restrictions are
being enforced.
Yes, the yellow lines mean people will park more in side roads away from the school but this means the children are
dispersed away from the school gate. We would trust that by that stage they would be under the supervision and control of
their parent or guardian. A few simple things can make all the difference to the problem. Where practicable, walk your
children to school; Don’t at any time or for any reason park on the yellow or zig zag lines; If you do park in a side road, make
sure you are parking safely and respecting the residents and children who live there. The Royal Oak has made their car park
available to parents at school times, please make use of it. A little thought and consideration can go a long way to easing
the problem. Thank you.
