Proposed Title: Improving Student School Performance

Introduction:
Many Teachers complain about and report the poor performance of their students. Efforts to identify
strategies to address this problem have led to varying results.
Literature abounds that except for some cognitive limitations present among the students, study
habits make a difference, grossly influencing school or academic performance. These suggest that other
things being equal, the greater efforts students exert in their studies, the better their performance becomes.
Significant relationships between study habits and academic performance have been reported in
previous studies. Other factors have likewise been identified which influence study habits. These include
family background, socio-economic status, and environment (Anwar, 2013).
Bothered about the poor performance of her Grade 6 class, Ms. Dela Fuente proposes to do this
action research.
Statement of Purpose:
The study seeks to find out how students could improve their low academic performance. It shall
answer the following specific questions.
1. What is the profile of the students in terms of the following?
1.1 Gender
1.2 Study Habits
1.3 Academic performance
2. To what extent do the students respond to “assisted study habits” as evidenced by comparing their
performances at pre-and post-intervention?
3. How do the following variables relate to each other?
3.1 Gender and assisted study
3.2 Gender and academic performance
3.3 Study habits and academic performance
4. What policies and practices may be proposed to improve the academic performance of the
students?
Hypothesis:
These are the following hypothesis:
1. The students do not significantly respond to assisted study habits when their pre-and post-
intervention performances are compared.
2. Gender is not significantly related to study habits and academic performance.
3. Assisted study habits do not significantly relate to academic performance.
Definition of terms
Academic performance. This refers to the general average of a student in a given grading period. It refers
to school performance.
Assisted study habits. These are guided and mentored activities provided by the teacher to the students
after classes.
Study Habits. These are study patterns and practices of a student which prepare him/her for class sessions
and/or examinations.
Research Locale
The classroom is the main setting of the study. Additional details may be included to give a description
of the class, as to its composition, nature, or quality of the students.
Samples
All members of the Grade 6 class in the section are the target participants of the study.
Procedure
Assisted study habits will be provided by the teacher as intervention in one grading period. Specific
techniques will be implemented, one after another, as part of the assisted study habits program. The
academic grades of the students before and after the said grading period will be used to determine the
impact of the intervention.
