I.

Objectives

At t he end of a 60-minute lesson, the students must have demonstrated the following with
at least 78% proficiency:

a. defined elements and compounds;

b. described and differentiated elements and compounds through creative illustration;
c. listed symbols of elements using the periodic table of elements;
d. classified elements with their respective groups in the periodic table of elements.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Chemical Reactions

Elements and Compounds and the Periodic Table of Elements

C. Skills: Communicating Ideas, Imaginative Skills, Categorizing

D. Values: Mutual Respect and Cooperation

E. Science Ideas:
An element is a substance that is made from one kind of atom only. It
cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
A compound is a substance that is made from more than one element.
The Periodic Table of Elements is designed to categorize different
elements into groups observing common characteristics of each element.

III. Procedure:

A. Pre-developmental Activities

Recall:
“Good Morning Class, what have we finished the last time?”

Motivation:
The class will play a find game, finding the symbols for each element being
asked by the teacher through browsing in the Periodic Table of Elements.

B. Developmental Activities

 Introduce the Periodic Table of Elements.

 Discuss the different groups and categories in the periodic table of elements.
 Identify the properties of each elements including numbers of protons, neutrons
and electrons, atomic weight, valence, electron configuration and the charges of the
elements.

 Compare and Contrast the characteristics of an element and compounds.

 Enumerate elements and compounds that are useful and helpful in our daily living.

C. Post Developmental Activities

Guide Questions:

1. What are the types of chemical reaction?

2. How can a chemical reaction be classified/categorized as a certain type of
chemical reaction?
3. Do we observe these types of chemical reactions in our daily lives? Cite
some evidences or situations of each type of chemical reactions occurred
from your daily experiences?

IV. Evaluation

Administer a Quiz bee for the Whole Class.

V. Assignment

Identify the following chemical equations according to its classification whether

it is a Combination (Synthesis) Reaction, Decomposition Reaction, Single Displacement
(Replacement) Reaction, Double Displacement (Metathesis) Reaction, Combustion
(Burning) Reaction, or an Acid-Base (Neutralization) Reaction:
